For informational and comparative purposes we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse – either in price or seating capacity. These crossovers, which are generally smaller than the Traverse, are often cross-shopped with larger models like the Traverse, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the GMC Acadia (see GMC Acadia sales), Kia Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating sold at a similar price point to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models that are sold under the same name, but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automaker, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Traverse sales began to recover from inventory constraints during the fourth quarter, placing fourth among several competitors, though availability of units at dealerships still remains tight. Traverse new-vehicle inventory was running at 17 days supply in February 2023, slightly up from 16 days supply in January 2023. For reference, a 60-day supply was considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, a 60 day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on-site to sustain current sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

About Chevy Traverse

The 2023 Chevy Traverse arrives largely unchanged from the refreshed 2022 Chevy Traverse, but includes some pricing changes, adding anywhere from $300 to $545 depending on trim level and configuration. The pricing has increased yet another $300 for nearly all Chevy models as a result of a three-year Remote Access plan that now comes as standard. Recently, Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Chevy Traverse a “recommended” rating.

Production of the 2023 Chevy Traverse started at the GM Lansing Delta Township Assembly facility in Michigan on July 11th, 2022. The online configurator tool is live for the 2023 Traverse.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Chevy Traverse is scheduled to arrive later on in 2023.

During a presentation given at the recent GM Investor Day event, GM President Mark Reuss said the upcoming third generation of the full-size crossover is scheduled to launch during the 2023 calendar year, meaning it should arrive as a 2024 model.

“A nice enhancement for this; obviously a very popular three-row vehicle, high-volume, right in the heart of the market, right below the [Chevy] Tahoe in terms of size,” he said, “but very much more truck-like as we introduce the refresh of that.”

A next-gen, 2024 Chevy Traverse prototype was recently spied out in the wild, showing the overall shape being more boxy and upright than the current second-gen model, among other visual clues. Also, the next-gen Traverse will likely get the more rugged Activ trim level, while possibly dropping the range-topping High Country trim level.

Production of the upcoming 2024 Chevy Traverse is set to kick off in December.

The Bow Tie brand’s largest crossover continues to be recognized for its value. The 2020 Chevy Traverse was listed as one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers by Kelley Blue Book. Additionally, Consumer Reports hailed the 2022 Chevy Traverse as the easiest model to drive in the midsize three-row utility segment.

Getting production ramped up will enable GM to sell even more of its mainstream, three-row full-size crossover to better take on competitors. That will be critical as the next-gen model arrives later this year.

  1. These are great vehicles. My daughter bought a new one in 2016. I have maintained it since new and changed the oil this past Sunday. At 112k miles it still has the original brakes and battery. So far I have replaced both headlights, coolant temp sensor and serviced the AC. That’s it except for wipers.

    1. It’s remarkable you are on the original battery. At this age,I’d keep an eye on it.

    2. Funny, my BIL has one. Traded in a Malibu because they wanted too much to fix it. Traverse has been in a several times for various issues, usually related to the transmission. A bad battery would be the least of their worries.

  2. Though still getting totally smoked by the Explorer and Highlander even with combined with the Acadia sales figures.

Hooray were number 3 or 4!!! Possibly 5!!!…..I guess? Maybe??

    1. And the explorer has been steadily falling every year since this new one was revealed. It has reviewed horribly and as people start realize that they shop others. I would gladly take a Traverse over an explorer as those have had reliability issues and the pizzaz of rwd and a big motor doesn’t make the rest any better when it is sub par. We had one as a rental when we went skiing and our friends that came with have a 2020 Traverse, they weren’t impressed and were happy with their choice.

      1. Yet there it sits up 5% from last year and outselling the Traverse by 110,708 units…..

        1. I might consider the Ford but never the Toy.

        2. Helps to have fleet sales in fords case. The explorer would be doomed if cops didn’t buy them.

Toyota sales benefit from all those Camry moms moving up to RAV4’s and highlanders. Camry sales have dropped with the demise of the sedan, but at least its survived due to its big head start.

The traverse is holding good sales considering that GM is also partially canibalizing their crossover sales between the traverse/blazer/GMC/Buicks. Isn’t GM still the leading crossover seller after all sales are added up?

          Reply
          1. Because GM doesn’t dump in fleets? Good call buddy. If GM could sell as many police vehicles as Ford, they would. But no matter how they try, they haven’t been close since the first Clinton administration.

      2. Just rented an Explorer for a ski trip in the mountains as well. What a horrible vehicle. Power delivery was very random and it was not at all smooth. There was insufficient room in the front seat for me and the back seats had minimal leg room as well.

Driving it, there was nothing that suggested to me that it was a RWD vehicle.

No way I’d ever consider purchasing an Explorer.

        1. GMC fan hates his rented Ford. Well that settles it! The sales figures must be reversed somehow.

      3. Yes I’m sure they came up and examined your rental inside and out, and then told you how much better their car was. That’s totally believable. Doesn’t sound like you’re making it up whatsoever.

  4. Have both Traverse and Pilot in the family. 2 years in, the Pilot is superior in almost every way. Quality, fit and finish, ride, resale value etc. Know nothing about Explorer.
