Chevy Equinox Wins 2022 Automotive Loyalty Award

The Chevy Equinox won the 2022 “Segment Model Loyalty Award” in the Small Utility segment of the 27th annual Automotive Loyalty Award.

To determine which vehicles placed first in their category, the automotive research firm S&P Global Mobility analyzed full-year purchase data from 2022. Loyalty was measured by total purchases of new vehicles by owners of the same vehicle model, brand, or manufacturer from a previous model year.

The Chevy Equinox did not win the loyalty award last year. This year, however, it was one of five GM models that won a 2022 Segment Model Loyalty Award, up from three GM models winning a segment loyalty award in 2021. All five winning models in 2022 were nameplates falling under the umbrella of the Chevrolet brand.

The other four models that won the 2022 award for their division are listed below, along with the segment in which they achieved first place for loyalty.

GM also won the “Overall Loyalty to Manufacturer” award in the S&P Global Mobility 27th annual Automotive Loyalty Awards. This represents the eighth consecutive year GM took top place in the research firm’s awards for customer loyalty.

It was also the 19th occasion GM was the leading automaker for loyalty in the previous 27 years. This makes The General the annual customer loyalty winner more than 70 percent of the time over nearly the past three decades.

As a reminder, the 2023 Chevy Equinox (the model year that was the main focus of the award) has only a single powertrain option, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine developing 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with the GM six-speed automatic transmission. The I4 LSD engine replaced the 2022 model year’s turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, which was rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.

Under the skin of the Equinox is the GM D2 platform, with production taking place at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant and GM San Luis Potosí plant, both located in Mexico.

Only minor updates are expected for the 2024 Equinox in the wake of the mid-cycle refresh introduced for the 2022 model year. The 2025 Chevy Equinox, spied testing by GM Authority in late December 2022, is expected to introduce an all-new generation of the compact crossover, and should debut sometime during the 2024 calendar year.

  1. WOW.

  2. I’m not a big fan of the current generation. The previous generation was the perfect size. The only thing needed was more sound insulation. The same thing the current generation needs, as well.

  3. We are on our second Equinox (2012 and 2021). I have only bought new cars from GM in my lifetime primarily because of the GM Credit Card which I have had for about 30 years. The GM Credit Card is the best loyalty incentive any automaker has ever come up with.

    1. Smart minds think alike. Thirty years with GM card and 5 cars.

      1. Same here, GM card since 95 and GM employee discount (yes I am a double dipper) and getting ready to order vehicle number 5. Also have 4 Equinoxes in the family, they are great vehicles.

        1. Too bad that double dip is small. The regular card earns 4% where as the GM employee car is only 1%. When I had the GM discount I had a better earning card. Once I lost that discount I switched and have been racking up the points, it is better than most cards earning potential.

          1. The employee discount is still about 9% off of MSRP plus the card earnings plus any applicable purchase incentives. When the stars align I purchase and have made some really good buys over the years. When I bought my 09 G-6 the dealer told me that was the best discount from MSRP he had seen. Same with my 2012 Silverado.

    2. Our family likes efficient sedans (Malibu, Beretta, Cutlass) and repeated our purchases of Chevy Cruze 3 times until GM unfortunatly discontinued. Then bought a new leftover Volt. Now we just easily maintain our little Chevys. 40+ MPG hwy! Quiet, peppy, sports sedan handling. But keep making Malibu a while longer till we buy again!

  4. We have a ’19 Equinox and like it, other than the sticky steering wheel upon long interstate drives (requires a tug to move it; of course, dealer ‘CND’). I’m surprised with the loyalty thing, as everyone knows the 2.4L in Gen 2 Equinoxes usually burn oil by 100K. My daughter has one of those. I grew up Chevy but some of the stuff they introduced brand-new right after the bankruptcy (Cruze, and Equinox) had startlingly bad long-term quality. BTW, I have owned 15 new Chevrolets, no other new cars, since 1981 and bought three 2015 Chevrolets in summer of 2017, from Chevrolet dealers.

    1. GM did take care of the oil burning issue.

      1. They say they did but even 2017’s are showing up with oil consumption and rear main seal problems.

  5. The current Nox and Terrain need the sliding rear seat feature returned and the 1.5T should be making at least 185-190 HP by now. If they are never going to bring back the 2.0T, which seems more certain than ever, then at the very least make your only engine choice competitive. The other thing that needs attention is the interior. Too much hard cheap plastic and weird packaging. Road noise didn’t seem to be an issue on the LS and LT models I have driven so I would suspect the RS and Premier with their larger harder riding 18 and 19″ wheels to be the primary culprit for that.

    1. The engine is competitive, just in the bottom half. If they added a hybrid option that would really help and make it a runner for my wife. Until they do that it will be the competition that gets our money for a compact CUV.
