Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Bolt family sales continued to rebound during Q4 2022 from nearly non-existent volume a year ago as a result of the battery recall, associated stop-sale, and production stoppage stemming from some vehicles catching on fire. The results enabled the duo to lead the mainstream EV passenger car segment for the first time ever the prior quarter, continuing that trend this quarter.
Bolt EV sales accounted for 4,866 units, moving up to third from prior quarter, while the Bolt EUV moved 11,242 units, placing a close second behind the Mustang Mach-E. The Bolt duo moved a combined 16,108 units for a 39 percent segment share, giving GM a solid first place showing in the mainstream EV segment.

Sales of the Ford Mustang Mach-E (see running Ford Mustang Mach-E sales) took the top spot with a 37 percent jump to 11,369 units, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 placed fourth with 4,490 deliveries. The Volkswagen ID.4 followed in fifth with a nine percent slide to 4,055 units, and the Nissan Leaf took sixth place with a 25 percent drop to 3,127 units. Finally, the Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5’s corporate cousin and platform mate, rounded out the list in seventh with 2,934 deliveries.
The mainstream EV segment accounted for 42,083 deliveries during Q4 2022, growing a very healthy 146 percent year-over-year, meaning Bolt family sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
The two Chevy Bolt models compete in the mainstream electric vehicles (EV) passenger cars segment, in which we currently include all mainstream (non-luxury) BEVs including crossovers, hatchbacks, and sedans. As more EVs enter the market, there will enough similar vehicle types competing against each other to warrant a specific segment. At that time, we will break these out for more specific sales comparisons. Beyond the mainstream EV segment being discussed here, the remaining EV segment is the premium EV market that contains models from Tesla, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid, Cadillac, Jaguar and Genesis. Accordingly, we are not including Tesla models in the mainstream EV passenger car segment sales analysis, since they are premium/luxury models.
It’s also worth noting that Hyundai and Kia offer electric vehicles that also include variants with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and/or hybrid (HEV) and/or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. That includes the Hyundai Kona and Hyundai Ioniq (without a number), along with the Kia Niro. Consequently these models do not offer a direct comparison to the Chevy Bolt family. As a result, these particular Hyundai and Kia models are now no longer included in our analysis. A related Hyundai model, the similarly named Ioniq 5, is all-electric, replacing the original Ioniq.
The GM Authority Take
Chevy Bolt sales continued to rebound after GM recalled, issued a stop-sale order, and subsequently shut down production of both the Chevy Bolt EV hatchback and Chevy Bolt EUV crossover due to a handful of vehicles catching fire from a battery-related defect. With sales having recovered, the all-electric duo led the mainstream EV segment again for the second quarter in a row.
The 2022 Chevy Bolt EV receives an updated exterior and interior design. It was also joined by a new, larger sibling, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV.
The 2023 Chevy Bolt EV gets a new illuminated charge port as a standalone option. The 2023 Bolt EV also introduces a new exterior paint lineup, with Radiant Red Tintcoat joining the list as a replacement for the outgoing Cherry Red Metallic paint color.
Production for the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV began at the GM Lake Orion plant in Michigan on July 26th, 2022. The online configurator tool is live for the 2023 Bolt EV.
Both the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV ride on the GM BEV2 platform and utilize the same single-drive electric motor, which produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, driving the front wheels. It’s fed by a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides 259 miles of range per charge for the Bolt EV and 247 miles for the Bolt EUV.
In November, the Chevy Bolt EV received the 2023 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award along with two more models from GM, namely the 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup. During the same month, Domino’s announced it was adding 800 Chevy Bolt EV delivery vehicles to its fleet.
In December, we reported that the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV is a steal with the full EV tax credit.
Initially entering the market for the 2022 model year, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV features a similar, though not identical design to the smaller Bolt EV. The most substantial differences include a more horizontally-positioned hood, a different C-pillar treatment, and a slightly longer wheelbase, along with a longer rear overhang. Unlike the Bolt EV, the Bolt EUV offers GM’s vaunted hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology.
The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV receives a new Redline Edition, set apart by its black and red Bolt EUV badge on the rear hatch, along with red accent decals on the outside mirror caps. The package also features a set of 17-inch gloss black painted aluminum wheels with red accents. The Redline Edition package can be ordered in conjunction with the LT trim level, or the well-equipped Premier. A Jet Black leather interior with red accent stitching is available on both trim levels.
The 2023 Bolt EUV also gets limited expansion of Super Cruise driving coverage. Accessibility now includes an extra 20,000 miles of compatible roads, up from the previous 200,000-plus miles, but not the doubling to more than 400,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada that other GM models have received.
Additionally, the Chevy Bolt EUV recently received top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), specifically a five-star Overall Safety Rating, the highest score awarded by the agency.

Luckily, GM is planning to build 70,000 new Chevy Bolts this year from roughly 44,000 units for 2022. On the fun side, EV fans can now drive one of five of Chevy electric vehicles in the marque’s new “Charged Up” mobile game, including the Bolt EV.
Production of the 2023 Bolt EV and 2023 Bolt EUV will cease on November 7th, 2023, meaning that assembly of 2023 models will last a total of 16 months.
Meanwhile all-new electric crossovers are coming from Chevy, ushering in the next generation of mass-market electric crossovers from the mainstream brand.
That includes the first-ever 2024 Chevy Equinox EV. The all-electric compact crossover features a single Ultium Drive electric motor powering the front wheels as standard; the setup is rated at 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. An optional ‘eAWD’ system will also be offered, rated at 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque.
The Equinox EV will be joined by the first-ever 2024 Chevy Blazer EV, with an available GM-estimated range of up to 320 miles on a full charge. The all-electric midsize crossover is available in front-, rear- and all-wheel drive configurations, an unprecedented option for a Chevrolet utility. The Bow Tie brand is even bringing back a Super Sport model with the first-ever 2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS. A standard performance AWD propulsion configuration delivers up to 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque in the crossover, enabling a zero to 60 mph time of under four seconds in the Wide Open Watts (WOW) acceleration setting. Additional performance-focused features include a specific sport-tuned chassis and Brembo front brakes.
Till these models arrive this year and next, along with offerings from competitors, we’ll see the mainstream EV segment continue to shape up and shake out.

Used Chevy Bolt EV Prices Dropped Significantly This Past Year
Lol what a joke. GM is shoving these turds out the door and you combine them to eek out a win over larger and more competitive vehicles, selling on their own merits.
just turned down another Bolt because of a dealer trying to screw me , tried to add poly pro for 796 bucks and lojack for 995 bucks and a 798 doc fee , the dealer is Chevrolet on New Bern North Carolina DO NOT EVER BUY FROM THIS DEALER
Anyone notice that after I exposed chevrolet of New Bern for their dishonest practices , and told them that I listed it here , right after that, all of a sudden I have two thumbs down ????? The dealer did it
I like the fact that the guy who replied, John Stapleton, shares the same name as the CFO of GM.
That stinks. I had quite the opposite experience when I bought a 2017 Bolt. There was no BSing. I was able to get an educator discount and they didn’t try to tack on any of those useless fake add-ons such as window etching, paint sealer, etc. I paid cash, so who knows what Tom-foolery their finance people would have tried. Over-all, it was a not bad experience and quite the opposite from what I was prepared for. I guess you never know….
It would be interesting to go back post-pandemic with the ongoing supply chain issues and limited supply of new vehicles to see if the same dealer has changed to more predatory tactics. For now, I’m satisfied, so I don’t need to go back.
Lojack, seriously? They must believe customers don’t realize that OnStar has stolen a vehicle tracking option that is inexpensive, and the purchaser receives a few months trial of the full OnStar package as part of the purchase. Apparently P. T. Barnum was correct about another sucker is born every minute if this dealer manages to stay in business.
I had one dealer that want 2500 for a ceramic coating
I had one dealer that want 2500 for a ceramic coating , plus nitrogen , wheel locks etc etc. Almost 5 grand it was Labonte chevrolet
We shopped around a lot before buying a Bolt EUV. Sir Walter Chevrolet in Raleigh actually was enthusiastic about selling EVs, didn’t try to load us up with dealer add ons, and had a salesperson who has quite knowledgeable. They were quite prompt about getting things moving on our 240 volt outlet installation. And their service department took less time on our recall battery replacement than estimated, too.
Will be glad when electric cars put dealerships out of business
Curious as to why there’s no mention of Tesla, I don’t care what anything thinks about them I’m just confused as to why their sales were left off the list seeing as how it’s surpasses everyone ever.
The stats we are often seeing are coming from the dealership association. Since Tesla has no dealership, they obviously aren’t a member of this association, hence there are no stats about them. It’s like they don’t even exisits.
And because they have no dealerships and don’t advertise, just two of the reasons tesla makes 30% profit on every car they sell,
you can thumbs down it all day, but I speak the truth , legacy auto makers make around 6 to 8 %, like Tesla or not, but they are the best engineered cars out there
Tesla still posts their numbers every quarter, no one else in the automotive world has a problem looking at the press release. All this does it make GM Authority look like they’re willfully lying/deceiving the reader that somehow GM is the leader in the EV space when they’re far from it.
Tesla doesn’t break down their sales the same way OEMs do, but we know they sold 212k Model 3’s and 252k Model Ys in the US in 2022 (over 1.3M combined Y/3 worldwide). We know that Q4 22 was their best ever, so simply dividing by 4 is low balling it, but still shows the significant gap that remains. GM created their own ‘mainstream EV’ segment nomenclature and only includes competitor’s cars that they can compare favorably to: these are all so-called ‘affordable, non-luxury EVs’ to disclude Tesla. This way GM can claim they are segment leaders. The bottom line is the much higher priced Mach-e, ID.4, and Hyundai/Kia offerings cost the same (or more) than the Model Y and are not true Bolt rivals. The only true comparison would be the Leaf (which the Bolt is dominating) and to a lesser extent, the base Model 3 or new Nissan Ariya. The upcoming Equinox/Blazer models will be comparable size/price wise with the larger EVs GM currently includes in this mythical segment. I would say that GM is the current sales leader in the compact SUV EV segment and its good to see actual ramping up rather than news that ramping up will occur.
The sales numbers are encouraging for the Bolt line of products, but tiny compared to the number of cars Tesla is cranking out.
I have a 2017 Bolt which has proven to be a very reliable vehicle, requiring only replacement of consumables and the battery-swap recall which was done cost free.
I am a little surprised that Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Bolt a very low reliability score based on consumer self-reported problems with the electric drive. What Consumer Reports considers a problem could be anywhere between the part number label peeling off to the whole drive unit falling out of the car. We really don’t know the severity of the problems as they could range anywhere from a minor annoyance to the vehicle being out of service.
Hopefully GM’s quality control hasn’t gone to pot. GM still hasn’t made that many EV sales, and it ought to be be doing its utmost to prevent its EV products from gettin a bad reputation spread by word of mouth.
Edited: to fix autocorrect changing a word.
I find it odd to compare the Bolt EV/EUV to models like the Mach-e. And if they insist on comparing it to this list, where is the model 3 and Model Y? My understanding is that the Y sold 252,000 in the US alone. The 3 sold 240,266!
In fact the S and X (luxury vehicles around 100,000+$), sold around the same combined than the Bolts.
I don’t understand how GM can have such low production numbers on such an incredibly well priced BEV which it has been selling since late 2017.
