GM has issued a voluntary emissions recall for certain units of the 2022 GMC Sierra HD equipped with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine due to a faulty Engine Control Module (ECM).
The problem: a defective ECM may not detect faults, set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (AKA the Check Engine light) if the following fault conditions occur:
- Change Air Cooler (CAC) low efficiency (DTC P026A)
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler low efficiency (DTC P2457)
- NOx sensor position 1 slow response (DTC P22F9)
The hazards: if the ECM is unable to function properly, the vehicle’s performance may be affected.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and reprogram the ECM with the corrected software as necessary. Notably, it should take techs roughly 1.5 hours to complete the recall.
Affected components: Engine Control Module.
Affected vehicles:
- 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD
- 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD
- 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD
- 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD

1.5 hours to reprogram an ECM? Does it use an 80’s UART?
FYI: Tried clicking the four hyperlinks under the heading “Affected vehicles:” and got 404 errors.
My ford super duty is at dealer right now for a similar upgrade. In california carb blocks your registration untill the recall is performed. I ignored it at first until i got my registration renewal
Last night i talked to a tow truck driver with a Chev 2500 pickup truck with the 6.6 liter diesel nd mentioned the GM recall issue with the 2022 diesel. He told me that his buddy in the same tow truck company has a Chev 2022 2500 pickup with the 6.6 Liter diesel and the engine blew up. I didn’t even ask the miles on his truck, but obviously as less than one year old, it’s still under warranty. Time off the road while GM decides exactly what to do etc, is hundreds of dollars a day in lost income for the tow truck driver here in Toronto. One week off the road and he is looking at a lost income getting in the $2,000 plus range. Was the ECM issue at fault by not warning the driver of any issue which led to the blow up of the engine? Probably.
