2022 Chevy Silverado HD Duramax Recalled For Faulty Engine Control Module

GM has issued a voluntary emissions recall for certain units of the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD equipped with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine due to a faulty Engine Control Module (ECM).

The problem: a defective ECM may not detect faults, set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) or illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (AKA the Check Engine light) if the following fault conditions occur:

  • Change Air Cooler (CAC) low efficiency (DTC P026A)
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler low efficiency (DTC P2457)
  • NOx sensor position 1 slow response (DTC P22F9)

The hazards: if the ECM is unable to function properly, the vehicle’s performance may be affected.

The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and reprogram the ECM with the corrected software as necessary. Notably, it should take techs roughly 1.5 hours to complete the recall.

Affected components: Engine Control Module.

Number of affected vehicles: At this time, GM has not released the number of vehicles affected by this recall.

  1. More faulty QC and low quality suppliers.

  2. The vendor of this unit should have his head served on a platter. GM should also be more careful on vendor parts sign-offs which now amount to 90+% of a vehicle. Remember the weighted key chain issue putting stress on the ignition switch? Mary had to go before Congress to explain.

  3. More proof that the last two steps of a product release are incomplete. Testing and field trial. All the “what ifs” are not being performed. This reads right through it. It also indicates an entire generation of experienced developers have left the field or retired. How many young developers know how to do a FORMAT C anymore? Spend sleepless nights rebuilding your computer because a program corrupted files or the HD died. EV software with autonomous driving or GM’s super cruise will really tax developers and resources. In time things will improve.

  4. GM had a recall number n212351210 that sounds like same issue as n212351211. I had the n212351210 done last fall on my 2022 GMC Sierra Denali 3500. The 211 notice says for Chev HD truck even though the 210 recall says Gmc and Chev trucks. Anyone know why these two recall numbers show the same fix?

  7. These ECM faults will keep occuring after warranty too. They charge lots of $ to fix them. Ford wanted $1000 on our F350 12 yrs ago. Cummins seems to have a better system but they have a few problems too. They charge for updates but is usually about $150. The exhaust after treatment all mfgrs. use it the big problem and expense area. I wouldn’t buy another one. Stick with Rams 6.4L.
