Rain got the better of Saturday’s qualifying session for the 2023 Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, meaning NASCAR set the lineup using its qualifying formula instead. As such, last weekend’s Daytona victor, Austin Hill, will take the green flag from the pole position in his No. 21 NASCAR Chevy Camaro racer.
As a reminder, in the event of a rained-out qualifying session, the NASCAR Rule Book outlines the following formula based on an individual driver’s performance and their respective team’s results in the previous race in order to set the Xfinity Series field:
- Driver’s fastest lap time position (15 percent)
- Driver’s final race position (25 percent)
- Owner’s final race position (25 percent)
- Owner’s points position (35 percent)
Hill’s No. 21 Camaro will lead the field, followed by the No. 20 Toyota Supra of John Hunter Nemechek, with the No. 7 Camaro of Justin Allgaier, the No. 31 Camaro of Parker Retzlaff and the No. 16 Camaro of Chandler Smith rounding out the top five. Meanwhile, since he was unable to post a qualifying lap, Cup Series regular Ross Chastain will start his No. 91 NASCAR Chevy from 38th, or last place.
Weather permitting, the green flag will drop on the Xfinity Series race at Fontana at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 25th. It’s worth noting that this weekend’s races will be the final events held on the speedway as a two-mile oval, as there are plans for it to be torn down and reconfigured into a short track in the near future.
