Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Yukon sales kept the full-size SUV family in second place from last quarter in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during the fourth quarter of 2022 when ranked by sales volume – a spot it acquired a year ago by outmuscling the Ford Expedition and all other competitors. Only its corporate cousins at Chevy sold more. Combined Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) and Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) sales continued to dominate the segment during the fourth quarter of 2022 when ranked by sales volume. The Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUV duo posted a combined five percent increase in sales to 47,168 units year-over-year, while GMC’s full-size SUV duo, the regular-length GMC Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL, the Tahoe’s and Suburban’s corporate cousins, followed in second with a combined 58 percent jump to 22,760 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes sales of the regular-length Expedition and those of the extended-length Expedition Max, placed third with a 15 percent bump to 20,400 units.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe sales grew less than one percent to 31,123 units and the extended-length Suburban saw a 14 percent jump to 16,045 units. The regular-length Yukon posted an eight percent decline to 13,296 units and the extended-length Yukon XL saw a six percent slide to 9,464 units.

The Jeep Wagoneer followed with a 12 percent climb to 5,943 units. The all-new Toyota Sequoia posted a 145 percent leap to 4,806 units as the updated model hit dealer lots during the quarter. Meanwhile, the Nissan Armada rounded out the list with a 20 percent slide to 3,294 units.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Yukon family sales again outsold those of the Ford Expedition family, as has been the case for over a year now, made possible by the launch of the all-new Yukon family for the 2021 model year. The Yukon and Yukon XL were only outsold by corporate cousins – the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, which together enabled The General to again dominate the full-size SUV segment, accounting for two-thirds of all sales.

The 2022 GMC Yukon added GM’s Buckle to Drive feature, a fully digital 12.3-inch driver instrument panel, standard Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning, and alloy wheel design changes, while the Yukon AT4 was made available with GM’s 6.2L V8 L87 engine. Even with the new digital driver instrument panel, the Yukon still features two interior designs, differentiating the Denali model from the rest of the lineup.

For the 2023 GMC Yukon, GM introduced a new range-topping 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate as “the most premium Yukon ever offered.” It comes standard with Vader chrome exterior trim, 22-inch wheels, full-grain leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, premium audio equipment, and more, including GM’s Rear Seat Media System. Check out the difference between 2023 GMC Yukon Galvano and Vader Chrome trim, the latter of which is featured on the new 2023 Yukon Denali Ultimate.

The ultra-luxurious, range-topping Denali Ultimate trim level was first introduced on the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup before making its way to the refreshed 2024 Sierra HD. Notably, the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate differs considerably from the Denali Ultimate Package (RPO Code PEC) that was offered on the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali as an option. While Denali Ultimate was a package that could be applied to the Denali trim for the 2022 Yukon, the 2023 model year reintroduces the Ultimate moniker as an all-new trim level that further differentiates the Denali Ultimate from the regular Denali, with even more upmarket equipment and features.

The 2023 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL received expanded Super Cruise driving coverage, with select GMC Yukon and Yukon XL units among the first to get this updated feature. Accessibility has been now been doubled to cover more than 400,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada, up from the previous 200,000-plus miles. Furthermore, the 2023 Yukon and Yukon XL now see the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit.

Production of the 2023 GMC Yukon kicked off at the GM Arlington plant in Texas on July 18th, 2022. The online configurator tool is live for the 2023 Yukon.

Refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models are set to arrive next year. We spied the 2024 GMC Yukon for the first time last February, and a month later our spies caught the 2024 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate testing out in the wild. In December we spied the refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon testing again.

The latest prototypes reveal that the front fascia looks will get a thorough revision, with a new, broad grille design and reshaped lighting. The C-shaped lighting signatures are once again present and accounted for, but now look a bit brighter than before, while the central vertical lighting elements are new as well. The look will take cues from the refreshed GMC Sierra, as well as possibly the GMC Sierra EV, with LED signatures highlighting the updated face. Fog lights will ditch the vertical orientation of the current model in favor of rounder projector-style units. The rear will feature revisions to the taillight housings, likely with new LED lighting elements.

Production start of the refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL is currently scheduled for November 2023.

2024 GMC Yukon camouflaged prototype

GM is not sitting still while the competition introduces new and updated models, and for good reason. Chevy has continued to help GM dominate the very lucrative full-size SUV segment – second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space. The Tahoe was GM’s fifth best-selling model in the U.S. for 2022, while the Tahoe and Suburban duo placed fourth. Add the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL duo to the offerings from Chevy, and the four full-sized SUVs together placed third, behind only the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size trucks, for 10 percent of all GM U.S. sales for 2022. Combining the trucks and SUVs commanded a whopping 43 percent of sales U.S. for the automaker. The General knows it has a good thing on its hands and is not sitting still, keeping its models fresh to maintain control of the market.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that even though the utility segment continues its expansion into the luxury space with variants like the new Yukon Denali Ultimate, with more comfort features, more technology, and correspondingly higher prices, GMC customers don’t want a luxury brand, as highlighted recently by Global Vice President of Buick, GMC, and GMC Hummer EV at General Motors, Duncan Aldred.

“I always say that you can go to a job site, worksite, and then go to a red carpet event with a GMC,” Aldred said.

“A lot of that has been driven by really consistent brand positioning,” he added, “because GMC knows what it is and has been very consistent in the delivery that we are Professional Grade, capable, and precisely crafted vehicles that really can be driven anywhere for any event.”
