GM is issuing a safety recall for certain examples of the 2022 GMC Terrain crossover due to a problem with the fuel pump module failing to reliably deliver enough fuel to the engine, creating a stalling risk.
GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA of the upcoming recall on January 19th, 2023. Since the safety recall was still pending in early February 2023, GM was not yet conducting actual repairs to correct the issue.
The problem:Â the fuel pump module in certain 2022 GMC Terrain crossovers is defective, causing inconsistent flow of fuel to the engine. The amount of fuel delivered to the engine could occasionally fall below the threshold needed to keep it running.
The hazards:Â owners of the 2021 or 2022 GMC Terrain may see a check engine light turn on. The vehicle may hesitate while driving or fail to turn over when the driver attempts to start it. The engine may also stall. A stall could increase the risk of a crash depending on where it happens.
The fix:Â the fuel pump modules of affected GMC Terrain units will be replaced at the dealership. The parts are not yet available as of early February 2023, so the repair cannot currently be made.
Affected components:Â fuel pump module.
Affected vehicles:Â
- 2022 GMC Terrain
- 2021 Chevy Equinox
- 2022 Chevy Equinox
Number of affected vehicles: A total of 23,164 units are affected. It’s worth noting that 2021 Chevy Equinox and 2022 Chevy Equinox units are also part of this recall.
Owners should: GM will send notification letters to all customers who own a GMC Terrain affected by the recall, which should be sent out by March 3rd, 2023. Special instructions will be included with these mailed letters if GM deems it necessary. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall action, they can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls that may be active on it.
Dealerships will begin replacing the GMC Terrain fuel pump modules as soon as enough parts are available. The replacement will be completed free of charge. Courtesy transportation will be available for customers whose vehicles are still under warranty for the affected parts.

Why is GM sourcing junk parts???
Who supplied the bad fuel pumps? Where’s GM quality control?
Obviously GM isn’t telling the whole story about the Fuel Module failures or the Expense to Customers, Dealerships and Stock holders.
I have had the Fuel Module fail in both , a New Tahoe (w Diesel) and a New Blazer (6cyl). Luckily the Tahoe was home and wouldn’t go further than 20 yards but the Blazer was on the Highway and shut down. Both had to be towed and GM only paid a portion of both tow bill’s and stuck the Dealership with the remaining part.
Interesting that the Technician showed me about 2 dozen of the failed units at his station he had replaced within a month. Tech also had a recommended fix to a failed module but wasn’t allowed to implement it.
Seems to be a wide spread Type vehicle, Model, Manufacturer and Supplier Issue and quit a Liability and Expense for GM.
So, I have 4 New vehicles, 4 utilizing the same module and 2 already failed yet replaced w the Same type module that failed…
I mentioned liability, Chevrolet / GM best get on the ball, and better Support those of us that Support them.
Apparently there is a huge expense involved with this Opportunity and it’s being pushed under the rug or better yet, being included in the rising prices each of us continue to experience.
After 35 years of commitment and as many New Chevrolet vehicles it might be time to change. (Definitely not the Dealerships fault, they do the best they can, unfortunately, they no longer get the Support they deserve to be able to Provide Customer Satisfaction)
GM has their problems these days !! I hope they get it right with this new Colorado/Canyon
This issue also effects 2019 models. Specifically coincides with Bulletin #22-NA-170.
Great, can’t trust the seven year old Chinese kids. Guess we’ll have to go back to eight year olds!
Maybe scotty is right?
This problem seem ominously familiar to what happen to Toyota a while back! Blame the Chinese made fuel pumps! # China makes bad things on purpose and fly a balloon over to spy on us!
Everyone is making a mountain out of a molehill with this issue. Yes, it’s an inconvenience for the affected owners. It isn’t the end of the world. Bad parts are manufactured and sold/installed every single day. GM has identified the issue and will repair all affected vehicles.
This is what happens when parts are sourced out to the lowest bidder. All automakers do that to keep costs down and keep vehicle prices as affordable as possible. They could certainly source parts and components with the absolute highest quality, but then vehicle prices would skyrocket and everyone would complain about that.
They are forced to play a game where the highest quality components are those the customer immediately sees/touches/interacts with daily. Unseen components are built to an expected failure rate whether it be based on hours of use, mileage, general age, etc. Most vehicles these days are built with an expected life of 150,000 miles before a major repair. However just the fact that warranties are full 3yr/36K and powertrain 5yr/60K should tell people something.
It’s about time ! My 22 GMC terrain fuel pump went out twice!! Then the fuel module!! Wait it gets better my computer board went out twice!! My terrain was a lemon!! GM went back and forth with me about buying my vehicle back. My vehicle lost total power twice on the freeway!! I drove a loaner car for 4 months!!! That’s how long it took for GM to repurchase my vehicle!!
GM bought back my Bolt and swapped for a 22 Terrain. Wouldn’t that be something to have them buy this one back?
Omg…..yes it would! Apparently there’s a joke at the dealership they say my vehicle was made on a Friday!!!
The problem goes back because my gmc terrain has a simular issue and I have to replace the whole throttle body 200 dollar part
My 2017 Terrain has the same issue……. odd you say it is just 2022 or 2023…. This problem dates back farther.
I never received a recall for my 2023 GMC trainna
I drove from Florida to Indiana park my car went get in and it wouldn’t start fluid pump was out. Sad thing I could be stuck on the road somewhere.
Thank God you’re safe! Hopefully this will be the last of your problems. My fuel pump went out twice. Make sure you keep a detailed record of everything. Good luck going forward.
Just got mine back was 2 weeks,, sounds fine just nurvis, about driving it,, should I be careful driving it,,
can anyone tell me if this problem will “throw a code”? my car isn’t included in the recall but I have had issues with it fluttering and stalling. they can’t figure out what is wrong with it because it doesn’t “throw a code”
All my lights would come on and my truck would stall too.
My 2023 terrain also broke down due to fuel pump. Leaving me and my 1 year old stranded. Not a happy camper
My 2022 GMC Terrain stalled out in the middle lane of the highway last night while driving home during rush hour. I was never notified of a recall.
I called On-star, who sent a GMC service truck. I was dropped off at home and my Terrain was taken to the dealership, approximately 25 miles away.
The problem was an internal failure of the fuel pump control module.
The module was replaced, and my vehicle was returned to me around noontime the next day.
I was lucky that the police department responded with lights flashing and parked behind my disabled vehicle for at least 90 minutes, until my vehicle was safely in place on the tow truck.
