Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has announced the formation of an Agreement of Purchase and Sale for the former GM Canada headquarters in Oshawa and the surrounding land in the Durham Region. The former GM Canada building will serve as OPG’s new corporate headquarters beginning late next year. OPG is one of the largest, most diverse electricity generators in North America.
The building is located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive and includes roughly 285,000 square feet of office and amenity space. OPG will renovate the building prior to taking occupancy. Financial terms for the deal were not made available.
OPG previously considered the construction of a new headquarters in the Clarington Energy Park adjacent to the Darlington Energy Complex. However, the company later opted to repurpose the former GM Canada building as a more “economical, sustainable option.”
“Renovating and repurposing a suitable existing building makes sense from both an economic and environmental perspective,” said OPG President and CEO, Ken Hartwick. “We look forward to welcoming employees to our new headquarters in Durham Region.”
The building previously served as headquarters for GM Canada. However, the automaker shifted to remote work at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has since opted not to return. GM Canada later moved its corporate headquarters closer to GM’s Canadian Technical Centre (CTC), test track, and the GM Oshawa production facility.
As reported last month, GM Canada sales were up 42 percent during Q4 of the 2022 calendar year, increasing the 55,724 units. Sales increased for all four North American brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC. Per Vice President, Sales, Service and Marketing at GM Canada, Sandor Piszar, the sales increase is tied to “increasing vehicle availability to meet strong customer demand.” Retail sales were up 31 percent last quarter, as compared to Q4 of the 2021 calendar year.
The Q4 2022 increase represents GM Canada’s second consecutive quarterly increase. Noteworthy model sales increases include those for the Chevy Equinox (up 211 percent), GMC Terrain (up 246 percent), Cadillac XT4 (up 583 percent), and Chevy Malibu (up 495 percent).

Maybe time to sell the RenCen. Hmm
Most office employees don’t want to come back after working at home. Which means they’re getting paid for working in their PJ’S. When factory workers had to go on the line, deal with covid outbreaks and infect there families.
Did GM Canada move it’s headquarters to a newly constructed building, or did they move it to an existing building?
