As prospective buyers continue to clamor for more electric vehicles, automakers have been rushing to fill this demand with a bevy of EV offerings. Car companies like GM typically spread their reach across multiple brands, using one platform or basic vehicle architecture to create diverse yet related vehicles, like the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon, for instance. Notably, GMC has not fielded any all-electric crossovers despite Chevy equivalents, and now, this may change in the near future.
During a recent media event attended by GM Authority, Global Vice President of GMC and Buick Duncan Aldred was asked about the potential for GMC counterparts of the Chevy Equinox EV and Chevy Blazer EV. In response, Aldred said, “Nothing to announce today, but watch this space.”
While it’s a forgone conclusion that GMC will eventually offer more electric vehicles in the future, Aldred’s comments indicate that an all-electric crossover utilizing Ultium battery and Ultium Drive motor technologies may be revealed sometime in the near future.
It’s worth noting that the only GMC electric vehicles officially confirmed or in production thus far are the Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV and Sierra EV.
As a reminder, GM has a goal of offering 30 EVs worldwide by 2025. To this end, the Detroit-based automaker has been making significant investments to support the level of production output needed to achieve this goal. This includes a retooling of the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, an investment to build Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups at the GM Lake Orion plant, and a noted interest in building more plants in Michigan.
An interesting development worth noting is that GM will not operate at 100 percent production capability in response to the recent price war started by Tesla and Ford. In fact, The General will only produce roughly 400,000 all-electric vehicles from 2022 to the first half of 2024, with a majority of production taking place later this year.

Why not just use the Hydrogen Fuel Cell GM has co-developed with HONDA instead of these environment-unfriendly Lithium Batteries ? Re-fueling the fuel cell is claimed to take about the same time as fueling an ICE vehicle.
By only building 400,000 EVs between now and 2024, it sounds to me they made this lofty goal of 2025 EV production in order to win over the government, but is also not sold on the business model of EVs yet. Thus dragging their feet to build only so many to appear as they are complying, but not enough to kill the business if the marketplace and infrastructure are not ready.
Or GM is being smart and limiting output to ensure less recalls and higher quality end results. Time will tell…
When was the last time you saw a hydrogen fueling station? Also, the round trip efficiency of sustainably produced hydrogen is as bad as petroleum. Hydrogen fuel cell cars still have/need batteries (albeit smaller ones). Lithium battery production does have an environmental impact but they can be reused for stationary storage after they are retired from cars and then nearly 100% of all the materials contained in the battery can be recycled.
Everyone has an electric charging station in their garages (outlets), and some can charge for free, but do you have a hydrogen station nearby? BTW, fuel cells generate electricity so they are real electric vehicles so why add expensive high pressure H2 tanks? Just add more battery!
I know no one “clamoring for more electric vehicles”, what kind of silly propaganda is that? Makes me laugh a bit.
On the ‘silly’:
Well, also, “…in the near future” is a vague term. -That could mean within the next 10yrs.
Ah yes the ole, “I don’t know anyone that wants one, so the other 300 million people don’t want one either”, dumbassery. EVs are taking over, get used to it.
Uh huh. Personal insults look so good on you.
Funny that you “don’t know of anyone clamoring for more electric vehicles” but the ones being released are sold out clear up into 24/25.
That’s pretty obvious … seeing how they mainly want to go full ev 2035
It’s a logical question – if Chevy is going electric, then wouldn’t it make sense to make its sister cars electric as well? Aldred’s comment appears to suggest they will. I anticipate they’ll announce GMC models this year and produce them late next year. Maybe they’re waiting an extra year to ensure the GMC launch is more polished.
We’ve had hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at work (Toyota Mirai) for a few years and there would need to be a significant investment in fueling stations for them to be competitive with EVs. They’re nice cars but fueling options are very limited.
Hydrogen seems like a good option for large trucks compared to BEV.
Have you seen the Cummins Press release about their new, dual-fuel, diesel engines ? They are ready for sale to both pick-up owners in a 6.7 L displacement and a 15 L displacement for OTR truckers. They run on either Diesel or Hydrogen fuel ! Hydrogen has come a long way with inventions of catalytic processes to split the O2 molecule to free the Hydrogen and that process takes far, far less electricity than the old method most of us are familiar with.
Government pushing all these electric cars on us & the closest charging station near me is 90 miles away. Nothing is coming to rural communities just like high speed internet. The government says all this but can’t believe it. Unless you live in major cities your left out.

Susan, you totally “nailed-it” on both subjects you commented on. Charging stations are a Myth and we’ve yet to see one anywhere within 100 miles. “High Speed Internet” ? Otherwise known as “Broadband” and defined by the worthless Government as being 25 Mbps or better….? Another Myth despite all the Lip Service and Lies coming from State and Federal Government throwing Biilion$ of dollars at it, allegedly, with zero results other than our State establishing another bureaucratic Department supposedly “mapping” where residents lack Broadband. At least they finally got the Map-data correct thanks to our former Congressman getting a Bill passed to force the Biden Administration to produce somewhat accurate maps. That State bureaucracy is now saying they do not have enough funding to serve everyone…..surprise, surprise !
