Chevy Equinox Recalled For Inadequate Fuel Pump Flow Issue

GM is issuing a safety recall for certain examples of the 2021 Chevy Equinox and 2022 Chevy Equinox due to a problem with the fuel pump module failing to consistently give the engine enough fuel, potentially leading to stalls.
GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA of the upcoming recall on January 19th, 2023. Repairs are not yet under way as of early February 2023 because the status of GM’s recall is still pending.
The problem: certain 2021 and 2022 Chevy Equinox fuel pump modules have a defect that makes the flow of gasoline to the engine inconsistent. If the engine receives less fuel than it needs to keep running because of this fluctuation it could stop.
The hazards: the check engine light could activate on the instrument panel of an affected 2021 or 2022 Chevy Equinox. The compact crossover could fail to start or might experience hesitation when already driving. The engine of an affected Equinox could potentially stall, which might cause a crash depending on location at the time.
The fix: dealers will replace Chevy Equinox fuel pump modules in vehicles from the recalled model years. The parts are not yet available in high enough quantity as of early February 2023 so dealerships do not currently offer the repair.
Affected components: fuel pump module.
Affected vehicles:
- 2021 Chevy Equinox
- 2022 Chevy Equinox
- 2022 GMC Terrain
Number of affected vehicles: A total of 23,164 units are affected. It’s worth noting that 2022 GMC Terrain units are also part of this recall.
Owners should: customers with a Chevy Equinox from the recalled model years will receive a notification letter in the mail from GM, which should be sent out by March 3rd, 2023. The letter might include additional special instructions at the time it is mailed. Equinox owners also have the option to visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls that may be active on it.
Dealerships will begin replacing the Chevy Equinox fuel pump modules as soon as enough parts are available. The replacement will be completed free of charge. Courtesy transportation will be available for customers whose vehicles are still under warranty for the affected parts.

I’m starting to think scotty is right.
Even a 1970s era gas station mechanic like Scotty has a 50/50 shot of being right or wrong on a judgment call, the rest is pure coincidence…. Look at his workspace (driveway) and garage, you be the judge of his “expertise”….
Who built these junk fuel pumps and where is GM quality controls?!
@Carl. Right?!?!? On one hand, GM ( and other manufacturers) tout all the testing that goes into new models. Manufacturers claim to “stress test their vehicles in places with extreme conditions ( i.e.: Death Valley, the North Pole, etc…) before introducing them for sale. You would think inferior and cheaply engineered parts would show up in all this testing. The bigger problem is the consumer is paying GOOD MONEY now for these vehicles ($40k+) and deserve far better for that money
My 2011 has the stalling problem but it is not included in the recall! WHY? 33K on the car.
My daughter in laws new Equinox suffered a high pressure fuel pump failure last week. As the dealer tech diagnosed and inspected the engine, they found that it was down over a quarter of oil. All this before the vehicle was due for its first oil change. Yeah THAT inspires confidence.
What year does she have? I have a 2016 and am experiencing that problem right now.
I have a 2015 and it started using oil after I had a fuel pump and timing chain and gears put in. I’m going to see about getting my money back from the fuel pump since I let the dealership do the work. Should have done all the work myself
Chevy suck my equinox is 2008 and has tons of issue that should be a recall on that years can’t even drive or move it coasting me tons of money as a single mother I got sucked right in
Stay far away from a Chevy Equinox. Bad track record. The entire car needs to be recalled. Beware of oil consumption. I don’t know where it goes, I hardly drive my car and it had an oil change 4 months prior. Suddenly, while driving it, stalled and would not go into gear. Oil was very low!!! Many consumer complaints about this and many more problems. I’m selling my “money pit death trap” before the engine goes. You’re lucky if it makes it to 100,000 miles. Major problems will come. Crackheads must’ve designed this model!!
Honestly, your comment about Equinoxes from model year 2017 and earlier does not apply here. 2018-to current models have a different engine and have been quite reliable.
Until you own or have owned an earlier year equinox you can’t speak on the problems myself or other owners are having and are experiencing. Just because Chevy themselves did not include earlier models in the recall doesn’t mean anything. As you can scrolling through the comments quite a few ppl with earlier models are talking about the same problem.
Our 2019 and our daughter’s 2018 have had no problems! We hope it’s stays that way!
Mine too!
2015 equinox has the same issues with the fuel pump
2017 same problem
It’s a known problem that the Chevy equinox burns oil and causes motor damage yet there still on the market . Thank goodness for an extended warranty and a mechanic who would go the extra mile.
I have a 2017 and the very same issues I have are now present in 2021 and 2022 Equinox as well. Why are they still allowed to make these death traps to drive on the roads? I have the same issue with oil and gas. I get my oil changed on time, but within a few weeks after my oil is low, and where is it going? I don’t have any oil leaks.
I have a 2015 Equinox also with same problems of oil consumption. Dealership said after noticing problem gave me a written document stating that the owner of car is responsible for checking oil weekly and to add oil when low. I’m sorry weekly checks is for fleet vehicles not for owners. Upon start up on cold morning if you don’t let it warm up it has a rattling metal sound in engine. My mechanic said that’s a good indication the oil is low. Guess what it still makes that noise irregardless of low oil or not. Don’t buy 2015 Equinox. It’s a bad engine for an other wise comfortable ride. 145k miles and barely getting by.
I have a 2016 and engine is dead at only 100,700 miles. I will never buy another Chevy. Second Chevy 2nd motor that took a crap! My 2011 traverse I had same problem!
Have a 2011 and the engine stalls dead just off idle. Not every time but too frequent. I can perceive attempting to pull out in traffic and the engine dying and I cannot get it re-started and prevent an impact from another car. It only has 33K on it so in effect it is nearly new. I have checked and the response is there is no record of this on the 2011. HELLO? Neither the car nor I can understand the stonewalling because the stall happens and has been reported by many.
my 2022 had this issue issue today, reported it, had it toed and they will NOT pay for a rental car until they have a “fix” for it. When I spoke with GM today they DO NOT have a “FIX” for the problem and could be a while until they do. I am out a car for IDK how long at this point, and what is more, they are saying that it is due to “bad” gas. IT IS NOT BAD GAS. I am letting them rule everything else out, but I AM NOT HAPPY. I have owned a chevy EQUINOX since 2014. LOVED this car and now I am thinking I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVY.
