Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac Escalade sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 kept the full-size luxury SUV in command of its segment, accounting for a majority of all deliveries when ranked by sales volume. On a combined basis, the Escalade family – comprised of the regular-length Escalade and extended-length Escalade ESV – saw sales grow nine percent to 10,568 deliveries, keeping the top two spots among six models compared to last quarter. Individually, the regular-length Escalade moved 6,352 units while the Escalade ESV moved 4,216 units.

Note that a year-over-year percentage change figure is not available for the Escalade ESV for this quarter because sales data is sometimes not broken out between it and the regular-length Escalade. That is also why only combined sales change can be counted as well. The seeming drop in sales for the regular-length Escalade is due to comparing combined sales in the year-ago quarter to broken out sales for this quarter (Q4 2022).

The Lincoln Navigator (see running Lincoln Navigator sales) remained in second place with a 20 percent bump to 4,056 units. The Escalade ESV alone sold more units than the regular-length Navigator and extended-length Navigator L combined. Lincoln does not break out figures for the two lengths of its full-size SUVs.

The Infiniti QX80 moved up to third place with a 12 percent slip to 2,553 units, while the Jeep Grand Wagoneer switched with the QX80 to take fourth with a similar 12 percent slide to 2,282 units. Here, too, sales of the regular-length Grand Wagoneer and the new extended-length Grand Wagoneer L are not broken out. Finally, the Lexus LX remained last again with 24 percent bump to 933 units.

Below, we’ve included sales figures of full-size luxury crossovers for the sake of reference. Though they differ mechanically from the aforementioned body-on-frame SUVs by utilizing a unibody construction, they are typically cross-shopped and considered as alternatives to the regular-length full-size luxury SUVs. Currently, the only full-size luxury crossovers are the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, the BMW X7, and Land Rover Range Rover, with Audi rumored to be working on a future Q9 that would slot into this space.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac Escalade sales were quite healthy during the fourth quarter of 2022, continuing to dominate its segment with a 52 percent share.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade represents a complete overhaul (re-engineering and redesign) of the flagship SUV as the fifth generation of the Escalade nameplate. The all-new model features pioneering technologies that add new dimension to the iconic luxury SUV, including an entirely new platform, all-new new exterior and interior designs, new trim levels, and new powertrain options.

Additionally, the luxury SUV features exclusive, first-to-market technology advances including a curved Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) screen, the first AKG automotive audio system and Cadillac’s acclaimed Super Cruise driver assistance technology. The 2022 Cadillac Escalade saw only few updates and changes over the initial 2021 model year, including more standard safety features.

The 2023 Cadillac Escalade introduces the third model year for the fifth-generation luxury SUV, debuting a variety of important updates and changes. That includes addition of a new Surround Vision Recorder system. The 2023 Escalade also receives expanded Super Cruise driving coverage, with select Escalade and Escalade ESV units being among the first to get this updated feature. Accessibility has now been doubled to cover more than 400,000 miles of roads in the United States and Canada, up from the previous 200,000-plus miles. Furthermore, the 2023 Escalade also sees the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Package.

The biggest news is the introduction of the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V, a new high-performance variant that boasts the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine, rated at 682 horsepower and 653 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through the same updated GM 10-speed automatic transmission and fed to a full-time four-wheel drive system, yielding a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The 2023 Escalade-V’s options list includes the Onyx Package originally available on non-V trims.

Dealers started taking orders for the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V on May 19th, 2022, and production of all 2023 Escalade models began on July 18th, 2022.

While rivals continue to answer the Escalade with various luxury and performance offerings of their own, the Cadillac Escalade continues to beat key competitors.

Speaking of competitors, a refreshed 2024 Cadillac Escalade is coming, with production scheduled to start this November. We expect the luxury SUV to receive a mid-cycle refresh with mild revisions to the front and rear fascias, while upgrading to the revised 3.0L LZ0 I6 turbodiesel Duramax and bringing a new antenna design. GM Authority spies have captured photos of prototypes undergoing testing.

And that’s not all. Cadillac has plans to make the Escalade electric. During the GM Investor Day presentation last fall, GM President Mark Reuss confirmed that a future, fully electric, full-size Cadillac SUV is on the way. The model will likely be called the Cadillac Escalade IQ, while its extended-wheelbase variant should be the Escalade IQL. These large, all-electric SUVs are expected to debut sometime during the 2024 calendar year and, as GM Authority was first to report, deliver a driving range of around 400 miles on a single charge.
