For the sake of reference, we’re providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. Unlike the new generation that’s currently launching, the last generation of the vehicle was offered in both two- and three-row versions, the latter of which competed in the same general space as the aforementioned three-row models. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from the three-row RX L, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to compare RX family sales to combined sales of the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, and Buick Enclave.

Doing so shows that the Lexus RX family accounted for 15,742 deliveries during the quarter while GM’s three entries outsold it with a cumulative sales of 21,826 units.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Enclave sales performance during the fourth quarter of 2022 kept the model solidly in third place in its segment. Meanwhile, the Enclave and its Cadillac XT6 corporate stablemate kept the automaker at the top of the segment.

Past production interruptions at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan impacted Enclave inventory and some issues have even persisted, with certain 2023 Buick Enclave units being built without underhood insulators due to material shortages. Regardless, sales of the Enclave have been consistent for the past year, with the premium full-size crossover continuing to offer a solid value proposition for buyers.

For example, the 2018 Buick Enclave and its platform mate, the 2020 Chevy Traverse, was named one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers available for under $30,000 by Kelley Blue Book. Additionally, Consumer Reports recognized the 2021 Buick Enclave as one of the best luxury SUVs to buy right now. However, the publication just two months later dropped the 2022 Buick Enclave from its list of recommended vehicles due to reported reliability issues. More recently, Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Buick Enclave a :recommended” rating.

The refreshed 2022 Buick Enclave introduced new features and options to the nameplate such as more modern exterior styling, slight revisions to the interior, additional safety tech, and exclusive equipment for the Avenir trim level, among other changes and updates. Also, the 2022 model dropped the base Preferred trim level, with the Essence becoming the entry-level trim. The 2023 Buick Enclave arrives as the sixth model year of the second-generation crossover with minimal changes.

As a reminder, the Enclave rides on the GM C1 platform and offers just one powerplant option, namely the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFY gasoline. Peak output is rated at 310 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 266 pound-feet of torque at 2,800 rpm, all of which is directed through the GM nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. Front-wheel drive is also standard and all-wheel drive is optional.

Production of the 2023 Buick Enclave kicked off at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan on June 11th, 2022. The online configurator tool is live for the 2023 Enclave.

Regarding the future of the premium full-size crossover, GM President Mark Reuss confirmed that the next-generation Buick Enclave will arrive during the 2024 calendar year.

“It’s our three-row made in Lansing, very profitable for us, and Buick’s flagship for now in the family-type luxury SUV segment,” Reuss said during a presentation given at the 2022 GM Investors Day event. “And again, the new design language for Buick, as well as the new badging as you’ve seen here over the last few months.”

All-New Buick Electra E5 EV world debut in China

Looking beyond ICE models, Buick plans to launch its first electric vehicle in 2024 and go full EV by 2030. The Tri-Shield’s EV offensive in North America will begin with the Buick Electra E5 that was recently unveiled in China.

Working through supply chain issues and related production interruptions should boost sales for the Enclave in the near- to medium-term. Furthermore, time will tell if the next-gen Enclave will help even more as the Enclave has taken both the second- and third-place spots in its segment over the past year, but has yet to lead it from a sales volume standpont.

  1. Buick no longer cares about the American consumer. This is evidenced by their complete disregard for those that bought Enclaves with promised retrofits. At 1 year post purchase, buyers are still waiting on parts that GM claims are backordered. The problem with this claim is that they are shipping 2023 models with those supposedly unavailable features in place and functioning. I bet they wouldn’t dare do this to the consumers in China.
