GM has issued a product recall for certain units of the 2015 GMC Acadia because of a defect in the driver front airbag inflator with the potential to cause it to rupture during airbag deployment.
The problem: on affected GMC Acadia units, the driver’s side front airbag inflator could have been built with a significant defect by the supplier. The manufacturing defect could cause the inflator to rupture when the airbag deploys.
The hazards:Â if the defective airbag inflator ruptures during airbag deployment, metal fragments or shrapnel may pass through the airbag and into the vehicle’s cabin, potentially injuring or killing people inside the vehicle.
Affected components:Â front driver airbag module.
Affected vehicles:Â
- 2015 Chevy Traverse
- 2015 Buick Enclave
- 2015 GMC Acadia
Number of affected vehicles:Â GM does not know the number of affected vehicles at this time. The front driver airbag module was also sold over-the-counter by dealers, meaning whether or not a vehicle is equipped with the defective part can be determined only from dealer sales records, not GM sales records.
Owners should:Â GM will contact owners who had the part installed as a part of a dealer-installed option. GM has further instructed dealers to provide their over-the-counter sales records, and instructs dealerships that made such sales to contact buyers whose vehicles are affected by the recall. Dealers are to send a recall notice prepared by GM via first-class mail to affected 2015 GMC Acadia owners.
Dealers must also track down the actual owners of vehicles fitted with the defective part by repair shops, independent mechanics, and other automotive repair services which purchased over-the-counter front driver airbag modules from the dealerships, using the third party’s sales records.
The dealer is to install a new front driver airbag module in affected GMC Acadia vehicles and return the replaced module to GM’s Warranty Parts Center.
