2015 Chevy Traverse Recalled For Rupturing Airbag Inflator

GM has issued a product recall for certain units of the 2015 Chevy Traverse due to a defect in the driver front airbag inflator that may cause it to rupture when the airbag deploys.
The problem: on affected vehicles, the inflator for the driver’s side front airbag may have arrived defective from the supplier. The manufacturing defect can potentially cause the inflator to rupture during airbag deployment.
The hazards: if the defective airbag inflator ruptures during airbag deployment, metal fragments or shrapnel may pass through the airbag and into the vehicle’s cabin, potentially injuring or killing vehicle occupants.
Affected components: front driver airbag module.
Affected vehicles:
- 2015 Chevy Traverse
- 2015 Buick Enclave
- 2015 GMC Acadia
Number of affected vehicles: GM does not know the number of affected vehicles at this time. The front driver airbag module was also sold over-the-counter by dealers, meaning the presence of the defective part in many vehicles can be determined only from dealer sales records, not GM sales records.
Owners should: GM will contact owners who had the part installed as a part of a dealer-installed option. GM has further instructed dealers to reveal their over-the-counter sales records, and instructs dealerships that made such sales to contact buyers whose vehicles are affected by the recall. Dealers are to send a recall notice prepared by GM via first-class mail to affected 2015 Chevy Traverse owners.
Dealers must also track down the actual owners of vehicles fitted with the defective part by repair shops, independent mechanics, and other automotive repair services which purchased over-the-counter front driver airbag modules from the dealerships, using the third party’s sales records.
The dealer is to install a new front driver airbag module in affected Chevy Traverse vehicles and return the replaced module to GM’s Warranty Parts Center.

The recall also applies to the 2015 Buick Enclave and the 2015 GMC Acadia, which both contain the same potentially defective driver front airbag inflator.
As a reminder, a lawsuit was filed in August 2022 alleging shrapnel from an exploding Chevy Traverse inflator contributed to the death of Michigan driver Marlene Beaudoin when her Traverse was struck by another vehicle.

2015 and their is only a recall because it took someone to die. Not to mention the lawsuit. I hope they win big. They need to get rid of these faulty airbags.I would rather have no air bag than take my chances with these older air bags.
The theme seems to be, once a vehicle ages, the air bag inflators become explosive, shrapnel bombs.
The manufacturer needs to quit cheaping out on the inflator construction.
American safety standards don’t really measure up. Which is why those who can afford it, go with better built european built vehicles.
