2015 Buick Enclave Recalled For Rupturing Airbag Inflator

GM has issued a product recall for certain units of the 2015 Buick Enclave in response to a defect that can cause the driver front airbag inflator to rupture during airbag deployment.

The problem: on affected vehicles, the driver’s side front airbag inflator may have come defective from the supplier. The inflator may rupture when the airbag deploys because of this manufacturing defect.

The hazards: if the defective airbag inflator ruptures during airbag deployment, metal shrapnel could potentially be expelled through the airbag and into the interior of the vehicle. These high-speed fragments could cause injury or death if they strike a vehicle occupant.

Affected components: driver front airbag module.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: the number of affected Buick Enclave units and other vehicles affected is unknown at this time. Buick, Chevy, and GMC dealerships sold the potentially defective front driver airbag modules over-the-counter. Many modules can only be tracked through dealership sales records as a result.

Owners should: for dealer-installed modules fitted to the 2015 Buick Enclave at the time of purchase, GM will contact owners about the recall. Since dealers sold the inflator modules over-the-counter, they are also responsible for forwarding the recall notice to any owners who bought the part from the dealership. The GM recall notice is to be mailed to purchasers via first-class mail.

Dealerships also sold driver front airbag modules over-the-counter to repair shops, independent mechanics, and miscellaneous automotive repair services. The dealers should contact these third-party services and, using the service’s sales and service records, send recall instructions to affected customers.

The repair procedure for affected Buick Enclave units consists of installing a new driver front airbag module and send the original module to GM’s Warranty Parts Center.
