General Motors’ all-electric vehicles are slowly increasing in production output as Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive motors become more readily available. In order to reach the Detroit-based automaker’s goal of 30 EVs by 2025, GM is looking to open more EV plants to increase production capabilities. Now, it seems as though Michigan may be the prime destination for more GM business.
According to a report from Crain’s Detroit Business, despite declining sentiment of the business environment in Michigan, General Motors remains optimistic about the health of the Michigan economy. In particular, GM Chief Economist Elaine Buckberg points towards existing assembly plants in and around Michigan, as well as a proximity to the supply base and a strong workforce.
“We have more assembly plants here than anywhere else, so it would make sense that we should have more battery plants in or near Michigan,” Buckberg was quoted as saying. “Those decisions haven’t been made, but the proximity of battery plants to assembly plants is super important.”
As a reminder, GM has been busy constructing and opening Ultium Cells plants around the country. In fact, the Ultium Cells plant in Warren, Ohio is now open for business, while two other Ultium Cells battery plants are under construction, including the GM Lansing, Michigan plant and the GM Spring Hill, Tennessee plant. This brings the total number of confirmed Ultium Cells plants up to three, with a potential forth to be built in Indiana.
On the product side of things, the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan (née Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center) is already in operation, currently building the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, and production of the GMC Hummer EV SUV will soon begin as well. Meanwhile, the GM Orion plant presently manufactures the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV, but is in the process of being converted to Ultium vehicle production. Both these plants are also scheduled to build the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups.

Not surprised given the mutual woke-ism of GM leadership and the current Michigan governor, but still better than China.
Most of the mined battery minerals to build these batteries come from Quebec Canada so why isn’t the under utilized Oshawa Plant along with CAMI not building EV’s too in addition to Chev. iCE Trucks in Oshawa , but since they have an expensive EV test track recently installed or even a new GM Battery plant in Canada under new NAFTA ?
Good news. Detroit deserves it for heaven sakes. After all they were once the motor city . I also like that Springhill TN is being put to good use after they gave us many successful years with Saturn.
Technically, Detroit was the *engine* city when it was all ICE. Only NOW it’s the motor city as it converts to EV.
What is good for GM is good for America. What is good for Ford is good for America. What is good for any automaker along with their supplier base the employe many thousand empoyees are good for America. Buy automobiles with an American 80% parts and labor contents is good for America!!
I’m surprised any company expands further in Michigan… The amount of job openings is unreal and isn’t getting better. Plus the taxes and dealing with the unions? I’m actual surprised how much Michigan cost in comparison to say Chicago area it’s not much cheaper…
I wonder if this is part of their negotiations with the UAW that are coming up … You’d think they would build further south
I’m for electric cars as an option. However this current flavor of the moment hype for electrics is going over the top. Musk is approaching his day of reckoning. I too like Musk, but he is the Howard Hughes of this era. His eccentricities are leading to a flame out. Like Hughes.
GM’s cash cows are full size body on frame IC vehicles. GM is betting electric unibody beer cans are the rage of the future. GM has finally grown a brain and is hedging it’s bets with continuation of IC engines.
The fossil fuel industry will never be offed. This is a pipe dream of skinny pants geek millineals and Generation X’ers.
