The Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 may display a message that reads “Service Power Steering” in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Now, a possible cause for this issue, as well as a solution to be implemented by GM technicians, has been identified.
According to GM TechLink, the Service Power Steering issue may affect certain 2017 through 2023 Cadillac XT5 models, as well as certain 2020 through 2023 Cadillac XT6 models. In addition to the Service Power Steering message in the DIC, the issue may also trigger Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0128, or Engine Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature.
Although DTC P0128 does not directly reference the power steering system, the code is still related in that the Service Power Steering message may be displayed in order to protect the steering gear in the event of an undetected overheating condition.
Per the GM TechLink report, the power steering module onboard the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 can detect issues in the power steering system and disable steering assist if needed. If power steering assist is disabled, the Service Power Steering message will be displayed in the DIC. For example, if the power steering module detects that internal system temperature has exceeded a certain level, the level of power steering assist will be reduced. Power steering assist levels will return to normal once calculated internal system temperatures drop below the pre-determined threshold.
To address this issue for the Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6, GM technicians are instructed to first diagnose and repair any possible engine cooling issues related to DTC P0128. After repairs are made to the engine cooling system, any remaining DTC codes should be cleared, and the vehicle should be taken for a test drive. If the Service Power Steering message returns, technicians are instructed to then follow the appropriate steering system diagnostic to fix the issue.

Great, I get a service lane assist and parking assist warning in my XT6 in heavy rain or snow and ice conditions, now I may have power steering issues. And my dash applique in front of the passenger seat just cracked. 2020 XT6….junk.
Sounds like you have a problem evaluating a car when you are purchasing it.
Hardly. All of my issues with the XT6 have popped up after 2 years of ownership and under 25 thousand miles. I test drove the vehicle in ice and snow and no sensor issues. The trim on the dash just split so that’s my fault right?
I had this issue on my 2018 XT5. The issue per my scan tool indicated the same code as described above so investigated replacing the coolant sensor. In the attempt to change the sensor, the connecting wire lead from the sensor to the wire loom seamed loose on the sensor. I removed the wire, cleaned and lube the connections and the problem hasn’t returned. Seamed like a simple fix rather than attempting to remove the coolant sensor which is in a tight location
Cadillac SRX’s have defectove headlights that are too dim to drive at night. This has happened to thousands of SRX;s. Go online and read the thousands of complaints. Cadillac and GM are well aware of the situation but will not recall or fix.
GM says the new lights cost $3100 to fix and if the owner will pay $1880.00,, they will pay the rest. This is outrageous. They should recall and fix them at their expense.
This has changed my life. I can no longer drive at night and I can’t sell the car because any buyer can easily find out the lights are defective. What am I supposed to do? I am a senior citizen, cannot afford a new Cadillac.
I am so disappointed in GM and Cadillac. They used to be trustworthy and dependable.
I have a 2012 SRX with dim headlights. Can’t see a thing at night. So I only drive it during the daytime. Seeing too many complaints about this. Need a recall for sure!
I also have a 2018 XT5 Premium Luxury AWD…well at least up until 3 weeks ago when steering suddenly went out and my vehicle was totaled in a single car accident.
I too, had the *PO 128 code* and had the thermostat sensor replaced because that’s what the repair guy said it was all that was needed when my A/C suddenly stopped working.
A few months later, I’m driving back home from a short distance trip. Had only been on the road about an hour when the accident happened.
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT DRIVE your vehicle far if you get this code or it suddenly appears. This is a SAFETY HAZARD that Cadillac/GM needs to be aware of. I could have lost my life in that accident. The claims adjuster said he’s seen some bad cars, but this one was terrible.
More XT5 owners need to BE AWARE and they definitely need to REPORT THESE ISSUES if they or their loved one have been injured or killed as a result.
Recalls and a Class Action Lawsuit should be in order.
