GMC Hummer EV vs. Rivian R1T Pickup: Q3 2022 Sales Comparison

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Hummer EV Pickup sales during the third quarter of 2022 placed the off-road supertruck behind its primary competitor in the off-road-focused electric pickup truck space. The Rivian R1T sold 4,400 units, considerably more than the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. Both the Hummer EV Pickup and R1T were not available during Q3 2021.

From a segment share standpoint, the Hummer EV Pickup held a nine percent share, while the Rivian R1T boasted a 91 percent share.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Hummer EV Pickup sales were minimal during the third quarter of 2022 as a result of extremely low inventory, caused by minimal production volumes.

Production of the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup began when the first Edition 1 model rolled off the assembly line at the GM Factory Zero plant (née GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant) in Michigan. Since then, GM has been steadily increasing production volume until June 2022, when GM began prioritizing the limited number of the Ultium battery supply toward the production Cadillac Lyriq. In addition, production was also idled for a month as the Factory Zero plant received tooling upgrades for future products. Despite these setbacks, production has been increasing every month, with 1,455 units build in November 2022.

Although manufacturing of the Hummer EV Pickup is ramping up, overall output is still significantly limited due to the limited amount of Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive motors. Currently, GM is producing Ultium batteries and motors at the new Ultium Cells plant in Ohio. Meanwhile, The General recently secured a $2.5 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to finance the construction of three more Ultium manufacturing plants:

Following the completion of these plants, we expect Ultium battery and motor production to drastically increase, yielding much higher production volumes of GMC’s all-electric supertruck, while also enabling Big Red to begin offering it in various international markets, where similar brand oriented models are typically extremely profitable for parent General Motors.

Higher production output not only benefits Hummer EV Pickup sales, but also clears the way for the upcoming 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV. This is important, as GM expects the SUV variant to account for roughly 60 percent of total Hummer EV sales, with the Pickup variant following at 40 percent. However, the Hummer EV SUV won’t enter production until early next year.

As it stands, both Hummer EV variants ride on the GM BT1 platform. A different variant of the same architecture is available at the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. The range-topping Edition 1 model produces 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of wheel torque.

    1. Rivian and the other start ups will be flush with cash for a few years. During that time expect a lot of merger/acquisitions.
      Imagine a wounded GM or Ford if conflict broke out between Taiwan and China? A OEM like Rivian might not want union liabilities but could earn a fortune breaking GM up with Buick and Cadillac going to the Chinese. Brightdrop and Cruise would be a great additions to their business.

  3. Learned a long time ago that when ‘making up’ sales figures, to NEVER use round numbers. Yes, Rivian is starting to get decent traction, but I think their published ‘4,400’ (Q3) and ‘8,000’ (YTD) seem to be oddly perfect round numbers. Reminds me of the early Tesla reported sales…

    1. Great point Doug. Though maybe these round numbers are accurate due to Rivian having direct to customer sales? Odd if they continue to report rounded numbers all the time though.

    2. The Rivian numbers in the above article are not numbers that were reported by Rivian – they are numbers that this website has guessed at. You’re making a huge leap to imply that Rivian is fudging the numbers.

      Rivian’s earnings report for Q3 stated ” The company produced 7,363 vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois and delivered 6,584 vehicles during the same period.” Note that Rivian reports only on total number of vehicles, which includes the R1T, R1S, and the EDV, although most of these were indeed R1T.

      As you can see, Rivian reports exact numbers. The “round” numbers quoted in the above article are clearly just estimates, and poor ones at that.

      1. I think you’re incorrect Loctite.

        Rivian does share sales figures with some publications. I did some work at GMA years ago but am not employed there any more. They don’t make up numbers, they get them straight from the OEMs.

  4. The Hummer was never going to be a huge seller. That’s not the point of it. The question will be how well will Rivian sell against the Hummer, Silverado, Sierra, Cadillac Escalade EV’s? Each cross into Rivian’s market. Looking at these numbers now is like calling a marathon at mile 1.

    1. I feel like at the current Eav sales paces they will all conti6to grow further and further. But yea be a us or them person… In this market growth is all everyone will see from a sales perspective for years, it’s not the same as the rest of the car market… Rivian will likely sell every truck they can roll of the line for years, same with GM.

  5. Rivian is presently operating at a loss, and currently only has enough capital to get through to 2025. They may not be around in the next 2-3 years. Not to mention they have only 30 service centers nationwide. If I was forced to choose between a Hummer EV and a Rivian R1T, I would probably go for the Rivian just for something different. I would NOT be excited about driving 4 hours to have it serviced and would fully anticipate that the company would be out of business in the next 2-3 years.

    1. TBH I doubt this, there is likely already 25k Rivian’s on the roads. This number will double and triple in the coming years. I see at worst a buyout by Amazon and Ford. But with years of cash on hand they are already trending closer to profit then Tesla was with far less time and far more in the bank. Lucid I’m not so sure about but the whole sale removal of Rivian seems unlikely.

  8. How are the Hummer and Rivian considered to be in the same class of vehicle, but the F150 Lightning isn’t?

    1. It’s so simple even my toddler gets it.

      The Hummer and Rivian are specialty off-road trucks while F-150 Lightning is a mainstream truck.

      The Ford is far from being specialty or having comparable off-road chops to the Hummer and R1T. The Silverado EV and Sierra EV will be along the same lines as the Lightning.

      Again, simple as pie.

    1. It’s basically a test bed for all the Silverado and Sierra EV technologies. The Hummer EV is basically the R&D for those trucks. It makes a lot of sense for GM to make the Hummer EV. The motors, inverters, battery pack are all from the Hummer, just to a lesser degree in some cases. I imagine a lot of the frame is also from the Hummer EV.
