Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Canyon sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 kept the midsize pickup last in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Toyota Tacoma continued at the top with an 18 percent bump in sales to 61,451 units. The Chevy Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin, stayed in second place with a four percent slide to 20,602 units, but still with just a third of the Tacoma’s deliveries. The Nissan Frontier moved up to third place with a 12 percent decline to 19,830 units. The Jeep Gladiator dropped to fourth with a four percent slip to 17,587 units, while the Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) remained in fifth with a segment-worst 51 percent drop to 10,712 units. The GMC Canyon rounded out the list even though it was the only other model besides the Tacoma to be in the green, posting an increase of four percent to 6,408 units.

The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment slid four percent to 136,590 units in Q4 2022, meaning Canyon sales outperformed the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments. The Honda offering earned 10,450 sales during the quarter, placing it only above the Canyon in terms of sales.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Canyon sales remained at the bottom of the segment during the fourth quarter of 2022, as has been the case since its introduction for the 2015 model year. We would argue that the ongoing margin gap is the result of GM’s decision to drop the Colorado and Canyon nameplates in 2012 – for which the automaker continues to pay the price to this day.

While supply issues over the past year or so have also contributed to a lack of sales, new vehicle inventory for GMC overall finally improved to a better than 60-day supply mark as of the end of November 2022.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4X with Edition 1 package

However, the all-new, third-generation 2023 GMC Canyon is just around the corner, headlined by the new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, a suite of new technologies, and the introduction of the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X as the range-topping go-anywhere off-variant. The new truck is available in four trim levels: the mass-market Elevation, AT4 off-roader, Denali luxury cruiser, and the aforementioned AT4X, which offers an exclusive Edition 1 package. All trims feature a factory two-inch suspension lift, enabling ground clearance of up to 9.6 inches, as well as a dedicated off-road performance display page in the infotainment system.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4X with Edition 1 package

Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High Output tune rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings.

Outside, the 2023 Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, improving the pickup’s approach, departure, and breakover angles since all models in the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim are equipped as standard with an off-road suspension package featuring an ultra-wide track and a two-inch factory lift. That results in an impressive standard ground clearance of 9.6 inches. The 2023 Canyon Elevation is available with either 2WD or 4WD, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels are equipped with 4WD as standard. The front air dam was removed across all trims, while LED exterior lighting complements the new exterior design.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4

Inside, we find an overhauled cabin featuring soft-touch materials and stitching all around. The all-new interior comes with a new standard eight-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trims, and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster for Denali and AT4X trim. An 11.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus Google Built-in (Google Automotive Services), an available head-up display, and wireless phone charger.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4X

The 2023 Canyon AT4 expands on the off-road performance with 17-inch off-road wheels and tires, a faux front skid plate, red-painted tow hooks, gloss black exterior trim, and red-accented AT4 exterior and interior badging. The 2023 Canyon AT4X, meanwhile, features an additional one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali

The GMC Canyon Denali stands out from the Elevation, AT4 and AT4X trim levels with heaps of chrome exterior trim, which adorns the faux front skid plate, grille and mirror caps and frames the exterior GMC logos. The Denali trim level also features as standard chrome running boards, LED headlights, taillights, daytime running lights and fog lamps, as well as a wide stance and two-inch factory suspension lift.

The cabin of the range-topping Denali is the most important aspect of this luxury-focused truck. The well-equipped interior includes a 6.2-inch diagonal head-up display, 11-inch diagonal driver’s display, and an 11.3-inch infotainment display, along with laser-etched open-pore wood trim, a heated steering wheel, a seven-speaker Bose stereo, Jet Black leather upholstery with Teak accents, heated and ventilated power front seats, and a drive mode selector with four available modes.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali

The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X features an extra one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff. Inside, the Canyon AT4X includes an Obsidian Rush colorway with Ceramic White accents.

The Edition 1 package mentioned earlier aims to make the new off-road-ready AT4X trim level even more appealing with a variety of exclusive off-road parts and components, including underbody cameras, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a winch, 17-inch beadlock capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, a performance front skid plate, and Edition 1 badging. Beyond that, a 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is on its way, and will include a number of important upgrades over the standard, new 2023 Canyon AT4X.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4 with integrated waterproof StowFlex Tailgate storage

The 2023 Canyon also gets a new StowFlex Tailgate like the Colorado, plus new wheel designs up to 22 inches, and keeps the Denali Black Edition package.

Production for most variants of the 2023 GMC Canyon is scheduled to kick off at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri on January 25th, 2023, with the new AT4X trim set to roll off the line in the spring of 2023. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 Canyon. Pricing for the 2023 Canyon starts at start at around $38K.

We expect the next-generation Canyon and Colorado to boost sales for GM with changes to its two models made with the segment-leading Toyota Tacoma squarely in its sights. The General even invested $1 billion in the Wentzville plant for producing the all-new midsize trucks. This year will tell if the automaker’s bets have paid off.
