GM full-size pickup truck sales increased 24 percent to 214,399 units in the United States during the fourth quarter of 2022. Chevy Silverado sales were up 23 percent to 141,912 units, while GMC Sierra sales were up 25 percent to 72,415 units. As has historically been the case, GM continued to sell twice as many Silverados as Sierras. The new, first-ever all-electric GMC Hummer EV pickup moved 72 units during the quarter, joining other EV entries that are now part of this segment – something unimaginable to diehard truck fans as recently as two years ago.

The solid sales performance of GM’s two bread-and-butter pickup truck nameplates, the ICE-powered Silverado and Sierra, along with the small volume added by the Hummer EV Pickup means The General outsold the Ford F-Series by nearly 28K units during the quarter, regaining the title of being the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America. Additionally, GM handily outsold the Ram Pickup by over 109K units.

- F-Series line item includes the F-150 IC models, all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, as well as the Super Duty line of heavy duty trucks.
- Rivian R1T sales represent estimates, not actual deliveries.
The Toyota Tundra and Nissan continue as ICE-powered competitors along with the Rivian R1T all-electric pickup. Those three combined accounted for half of Sierra deliveries alone, and the Rivian actually outsold the Titan. Speaking of the Titan, it received a slight refresh for the 2020 model year and will not be redesigned at the end of the current generation’s lifecycle, around 2025. Meanwhile, the next-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra started hitting dealer lots in late 2021, and seems to be gaining some traction, though not enough to make a dent. If nothing else, the Tundra appears to be taking sales from the nearly-deceased Titan.
Combining Chevy Silverado sales with GMC Sierra sales (plus the handful of Hummer EV Pickup deliveries) gives GM a segment-leading share of 39 percent with 214,399 deliveries. The Ford F-Series posted a 34 percent segment share with 186,650 deliveries, while the Ram Pickup held a 19 percent share with 105,255 units. The Tundra posted a five percent share with 29,727, the Rivian held a one percent share with an estimated 3,900 deliveries and the Titan’s share was nil with just 2,576 units.
Only the GM models plus the Tundra were in the green; the full-size pickup truck segment grew four percent to 542,507 units.
Looking Ahead
Sales of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra were up year-over-year as availability issues were addressed, and then some.
The refreshed light duty Silverado and Sierra both introduced their most capable off-road variants ever for the 2023 model year, with respective special editions as part of GM’s collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). Meanwhile, the refreshed heavy duty Silverado and Sierra models debuted during the fall of 2022. All of these models have been highly anticipated, with the refreshed models featuring an updated exterior design and an overhauled cabin (on most trims), while adding variants and new technology.

By mid-2023, GM will have launched updates to its entire pickup truck line, including full-size trucks and mid-size trucks with the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado and next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon models, making a bid to dominate all truck markets in which it competes. In addition, The General is is taking on electric newcomers with the Hummer EV Pickup as well as the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV and first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali, both of which debuted in 2022.
Chevy will also soon launch the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 as the flagship off-roader of its heavy-duty pickup line. Also, the Bow Tie brand began testing the Silverado EV RST last month. Previously, we captured photos of the Silverado EV outfitted in what appears to be the Work Truck (WT) trim.
For GMC, Sierra HD buyers are the marque’s most loyal, as most owners of Big Red’s heavy duty truck line return to buy the heavy duty pickup truck again. Furthermore, GMC expects the refreshed 2024 Sierra HD to attract owners of rival trucks. Additionally, we recently spied the “seriously off-road capable” first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X testing yet another time, this time revealing more details like DSSV shocks and 35-inch tires. This new variant will join the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, a new range-topping trim level offering a wealth of luxury and technology.
Regarding competitors, Ford unveiled the 2023 Super Duty as a Silverado HD and Sierra HD rival last September. This month, Stellantis unveiled the all-electric Ram 1500 Revolution pickup concept as a forthcoming Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV rival. It will offer an optional range-extending gasoline engine in a unique hybrid setup, wherein the onboard ICE will generate electricity rather than send rotational energy to the drivetrain.
Nevertheless, GM has a strong portfolio of ICE offerings that have been fully refreshed. These will be joined by new EV entries to continue securing strong sales for the automaker, while also potentially growing them. It looks like The General’s bread-and-butter is about to get toasty good.

I love the new Chevy trucks!
The entire truck looks great! Front end is awesome! Best looking truck out there right now!
Honestly I don’t know how sales are up. I’ve been try since February of 2022 to order a 1500 double cab rst diesel. My local dealership in Thunder Bay cannot order one. Keeps getting kicked out. Love the trucks but holy crap……
I’ve had a ‘23 Silverado hd full size on order since 7-22. The dealership advised me that my order is next, but they also advise that Chevrolet is currently holding off on building full- size trucks!!
With HD model change coming at the end of February your 23 model year truck might be hard to get. We tend to build a lot of fleet sales at the end of the model year.
This is more than my dealership has conveyed to us.
Thank you for the information!
And yet Ford marketing and automotive headlines and pundits will still claim f-series is the best selling truck, (and probably continue to incorrectly say “F-150” is the best selling truck) because Ford won’t break out the numbers, and GM doesn’t combine theirs.
The Lightning EV didn’t move the needle much!
Ford just claimed they have the best selling truck. Don’t understand why they are so ugly..
I $hit on GM all the time for stupid decisions
But
There 23 model year trucks are fantastic looking.
The 3.0 diesel option is well priced and is getting raving reviews. People can’t believe how good the fuel mileage is.
Great job GM. I don’t say that very often
Great job GM… now put this much effort into the new ICE Equinox and Terrain make them as good if not better then the competition… I own a 2010 Equinox LTZ V6 and it’s one of the best vehicles I have ever owned it has 117,000 miles on it and it runs like new. As for the new trucks they are great looking good job 👍
People hurrying to buy a new truck before being stuck with 2.7 4 cylinder motor. Or worse yet just ev. Can’t imagine pulling my tractor with either one. Bought a 2022 colorado only cuz last year of 6 ft bed. 2023 only short bed and will not qualify for section 179 depreciation as it’s gvwr is a little light. Missing my mini max diesel already but I guess they are gone forever.
