GM Catching Up To Lexus In Luxury C Crossover Segment

The Luxury Crossover C-Segment segment isn’t exactly short on competition, with several contenders in the mix vying for dominance. Last year, the Lexus NX was at the top of the segment list with regard to total volume sales. GM, however, is starting to catch up.
When it comes to competition for the Lexus NX, GM has two models on offer, specifically the Buick Envision and the Cadillac XT4. Individually, these two models fell short of the Lexus in terms of total volume sales. However, when combining the sales figures for the two GM models, we find The General trailing Lexus by just over a thousand units.
Total sales volume last year for the Lexus NX came to 49,002 units in the U.S., landing the Lexus at the top of the segment list. Meanwhile, the Buick Envision was third with 25,871 units sold, slotting under the Lincoln Corsair, which sold 27,668 units. The Cadillac XT4 was seventh in the segment with 21,774 units sold, slotting under the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, which sold 23,274 units, and above the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, which sold 14,085 units.

There are a few caveats to add to this as well. Buick Envision supply was limited in 2022 following severe production constraints stemming from the microchip shortage, as well as transportation issues, while production for the Cadillac XT4 wasn’t really in full swing until the second half of the year following very low production in 2021. Cadillac XT4 production did not start ramping back up until February of 2022, with a more significant ramp up in September and October of the same year.
Looking ahead, both GM crossovers are set to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the 2024 model year. Previous spy photos reveal the refreshed 2024 Buick Envision in prototype form draped in heavy camouflage, setting the stage for revisions to the exterior styling, new wheels, and updates to the interior. The refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4 has also been spotted as a prototype, and images of the new crossover have leaked as well, showing off new styling, a larger infotainment screen, and new tech. Production of the 2024 Cadillac XT4 will kick off in April.

Drive the Envision and the XT4. The 2.0T is noisy and the 9-speed transmission is clearly present as it upshifts. The experience is rather annoying and certainly disappointing. Now, drive the Lexus NX. The 2.5NA and the 2.4T are both silky smooth power-plants and the 8-speed transmission is virtually invisible. The driving experience between the GM product and the Toyota product is like night and day. Pity.
Traded my RX for an XT5 based solely on performance and driving experience. Cadillac and GM are far more exciting to drive performance wise than the appliance based Lexus. Lexus has a long way to go for drivability to catch GM.
Lexus is more refined in the engine and quiet category.
Both models have high styling; the Buick is understated while the XT4 is more sportier and somewhat flashier between the two. You can’t go wrong between the two crossovers.
Question……. Is there anything luxurious about the C segment????? The offerings in this class from GM/Toyota/BMW/Audi, you name it are not a vehicle I would be looking for as an enthusiast or preferential buyer. They are plain Jane cars you pay an extra grand for a bigger, fancier plaque on front.
I will never buy a car made in China. The Envision. You stiff the country for 10.5 m and then you build in China. Also do you really need GMC? And sell Buick name to China
I bet you have a TON of other stuff your star-spangled booty has bought… Go on and be a hypocrite though waving your flag!
I don’t think average people wave flags. He wasn’t playing the patriot card, likes his car, wasn’t being political. Nit everything us political.
I love unions because they ensure my neighbors are paid and treated with respect and not as if they are replaceable. I don’t think unions make bad cars, Germany is all union. Either way, unions built the middle class that is disappearing.
Pathetic: It takes two GM cars to match one Toyota in sales! Both Cadillac and Buick have been mismanaged for years so that a great car (quality/value/design) like Envision gets overlooked by consumers.
This refresh will ruin the flowing design. Hate the new Envista design. Nothing like Wildcat
Lol what, both the envision & xt4 start thousands cheaper than a base NX, buicks get a ton of discounts at the dealer to get them moving off lots and people think that is catching up to lexus? gm may have regained us sales crown but they are so far behind globally that it is all an inflated consolation prize for them while their stock becomes even more worthless.. gm is hemorrhaging and when the ev craze ends, all the money poured into evs will probably come back to haunt them and force them to require another bailout.
Stop spinning crap, GMA. You’re better than that. Instead of some mish-mash about how two vehicles still didn’t beat the NX, why and blah blah about supply chain issues, why didn’t you focus on the intriguing XT4 sales increase from ’21 to ’22? Headline could’ve been: “XT4 Sales nearly double from 21 to ’22” Sub bullets: Leap-frogged the GLA in a single year and market share skyrocketed from 4 to 10%. Then dive into the reasons behind this success.
