Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Silverado sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 saw the Bow Tie brand’s full-size truck line regain second place in its segment. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) remained at the top with a two percent slip in sales to 186,650 units, while the Silverado followed in second with a 23 percent bump to 141,912 units. The Ram Pickup slipped to third with a 22 percent slide to 105,255 units. The GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales), the Silverado’s corporate cousin, took fourth with a 25 percent bump to 72,415 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with a 75 percent jump to 29,727 units.

Starting with this quarter, we’ve added a couple of EV entries, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Rivian R1T all-electric pickup, to compliment the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, sales of which are already combined with those of Ford’s ICE models. The Rivian actually outsold the Nissan Titan, moving 3,900 units to take sixth place, while the Titan placed seventh with a 44 percent drop in sales to 2,576 units. While the Titan received a slight refresh for the 2020 model year, it will not be redesigned at the end of the current generation’s lifecycle, around 2025. Meanwhile, the next-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra started hitting dealer lots in late 2021, and seems to be gaining some traction, though not enough to make a dent. If nothing else, the Tundra appears to be taking sales from the nearly-deceased Titan. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup fills out the list with just 72 deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the Silverado held a 26 percent share, up four percentage points year-over-year. The F-Series posted a 34 percent segment share, down three percentage points. The Ram Pickup held a 19 percent share, down a segment-worse seven percentage points, followed by the Sierra with a 13 percent share, up two percentage points. The Tundra posted a five percent share, up two percentage points, and the Rivian held a one percent share. The Titan’s and Hummer EV Pickup’s share were both nil.

Combining the Chevy Silverado along with the GMC Sierra and Hummer EV Pickup gives GM a segment-leading share of 39 percent with 214,399 deliveries, making The General once again the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Silverado sales were healthy during Q4 2022 for GM’s best-selling vehicle, helping The General regain the crown for overall full-size pickup truck sales.

GM gave the Chevy Silverado 1500 a thorough refresh for the 2022 model year that addressed most, if not all, of the criticisms of the pre-refresh model. Updates include a revised front fascia, a completely overhauled interior with new center stack that includes a 13.4-inch infotainment screen, a new center console, new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and the latest tech. The range-topping High Country model, for instance, offers GM’s innovative Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system, a first for the Silverado. In addition, the all-new 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 joins the lineup as part of the refresh, and we expect it to further bolster Silverado sales. That means the Silverado 1500 now offers an even more extensive lineup, which includes Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, LT Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, ZR2, and High Country.

2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 arrives as the fifth model year of the fourth-generation nameplate, introducing a handful of minor changes and updates over the refreshed 2022 model. A significant change is that 2023 Silverado 1500 Duramax models are now equipped with the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 engine turbo-diesel “baby Duramax,” which improves upon the 3.0L I6 LM2 that it replaces. Also, the 2023 Silverado 1500 now sees the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit.

2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison

However, even bigger news for 2023 is the introduction of the first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison, which is now available to order. The Silverado ZR2 Bison represents Chevy’s second vehicle collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer – the first being the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison. Available as an optional package exclusively for the Silverado 1500 ZR2, the Bison elevates the off-road capabilities of the ZR2 with a selection of upgrades and unique touches. The 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 itself was recently named a semifinalist for the North American Car Of The Year (NACTOY) award and last month was recognized as the best four-wheeler truck of the year by Four Wheeler magazine.

Production of the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 began at the GM Oshawa plant in Ontario on August 20th, 2022, at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico on August 29th, 2022, for both Regular Cab and Crew Cab models, and on September 6th, 2022, for Double Cab models.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 is set to kick off on July 17th, 2023.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD High Country

For heavy-duty customers, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD last fall, featuring updated exterior styling, an overhauled interior, new tech features, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup. Additionally, the automaker teased the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 as the forthcoming flagship off-roader for the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup line.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD is once again offered in 2500 HD and 3500 HD configurations, as well as Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab body styles. The refreshed 2024 Silverado 3500 HD offers dual-rear-wheel configurations and trailering capacity of up to 36,000 pounds, while the max tow rating for the refreshed 2024 Silverado 2500 HD increases from 18,510 to 22,500 pounds.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD High Country

The 2024 Silverado HD trim level lineup includes Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country, while the Silverado HD ZR2 will debut later on in the model year. Customers can also opt for a wealth of packages and special edition models, including the Z71 Sport Edition, Z71 Chrome Sport Edition, Midnight Special Edition, and Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition.

Production of the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD kicked off at the GM Flint plant in Michigan on July 18th, 2022, and at the GM Oshawa plant in Canada on September 12th, 2022.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST

Finally, GM revealed the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV a year ago. Set to launch in 2023 for the 2024 model year, the upcoming Silverado EV will first come in RST and WT trims. Other trim levels, including the upcoming 2024 Chevy Silverado EV Trail Boss, are also planned. The Chevy Silverado EV will ride on the BT1 platform, a dedicated electric architecture that uses Ultium Battery technology.

More recently, Chevy teased the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV undergoing a tow test in a brief video. According to Vehicle Chief Engineer, Chevy Silverado EV, Nichole Kraatz, the all-electric Silverado handled the job with ease, exhibiting stability and solid dynamics at a variety of speeds.

“Such a smooth, controlled, responsive truck,” Kraatz says. “And it’s just incredible.”

Check out the video at the end.

But competitors have a few upgrades and new models of their own.

Ford unveiled the all-new 2023 Ford Super Duty last fall, a day after the Chevy Silverado HD reveal.

Then, Stellantis unveiled the new 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel just a couple of days later as an upcoming rival to the Chevy Silverado HD ZR2.

In addition, a year after the Chevy Silverado EV reveal, Stellantis unveiled the all-electric Ram 1500 Revolution pickup concept. It will offer an optional range-extending gasoline engine in a unique hybrid setup, wherein the onboard ICE will generate electricity rather than send rotational energy to the drivetrain.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss

As Chevy’s launch of refreshed models across its light-duty and heavy-duty full-size pickup truck lines, exciting new trim levels, and its first-ever EV entry begin to fully hit the market over the next year, sales volume of GM’s bread-and-butter product should really take off.

  1. If dealers could order the units they wanted instead of what their allocated. Silverado sales would really rock! Being forced to stock unwanted merchandise is no way to run any business. Maybe you just need to know who to make out the check to. It’s funny how the algorithm seems to favor a select few. Turn and earn is a joke. Keep impeccable records of the merchandise you ask for and the merchandise your allocated. You’ll need it one day.
