The GM Authority Take

Sales of the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo kept the Bow Tie brand at the top of the mainstream full-size SUV segment to close out the year. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM commands a full two-thirds of the space, a remarkable 67 percent segment share, in spite of competitors’ attempts to steal sales away. In that regard, while sales of the all-new Jeep Wagoneer had continued to slowly climb, they leveled out somewhat year-over-year. The Suburban alone moved nearly three times as many units as the Wagoneer. Also, the all-new Toyota Sequoia finally hit the marketplace in full swing, getting within a little over 1K units of the Wagoneer.

Of course, the Tahoe and Suburban were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban. That overhaul included the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL as well the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

The all-new generation for the Tahoe and Suburban added several new trim levels to the lineup – notably, the RST, Z71, and High Country – plus a new diesel engine option, as well as fresh styling, a redesigned interior, and the latest tech features for comfort, convenience, and safety.

2021 Chevy Suburban Premier

A host of changes and updates were in store for the 2022 Chevy Tahoe. Similarly, the 2022 Chevy Suburban also received quite a few changes and updates.

The 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban introduce only a handful of updates over the preceding 2022 model, including the addition of Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist, but temporarily loses the Enhanced Trailer View feature.

For 2023, the Tahoe and Suburban also get a new Advanced Technology Package that includes GM’s hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology – available for the first time ever on the two full-size SUVs. In November, the duo received expanded Super Cruise driving coverage, with select Tahoe and Suburban units among the first to get this updated feature. Accessibility has been now been doubled to cover more than 400,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada, up from the previous 200,000-plus miles.

Furthermore, the 2023 Tahoe and Suburban now see the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit.

2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition

What’s more, Chevy unveiled the new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition. The enhanced SUV offers those looking for extra pep a set of police pursuit-rated upgrades and underhood goodies. The Tahoe RST Performance Edition is powered by the same naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine offered on most Tahoe models, but receives Chevrolet Performance induction and exhaust systems, adding an extra 13 horsepower and seven pound-feet of torque to bring peak output figures to 433 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque. Output is directed to the Tahoe’s four-wheel drive system exclusively by way of the GM 10-speed automatic transmission. Max trailering capacity remains at 7,600 pounds.

Other performance components are taken from the Chevy Tahoe PPV, including unique engine and suspension calibrations, along with 275/55VR20 Firestone Firehawk Pursuit tires. The 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition offers stronger braking power with a 60-mph-to-0 stopping distance of 133 feet thanks to Brembo front and rear brakes, with the calipers finished in Torch Red.

Aesthetic upgrades include black RST badges in the rear, while standard sport pedals are found in the cabin. Additionally, the new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition bundles the Luxury Package, bringing a set of creature comforts to the sporty full-size SUV. The new Performance Edition upgrade is priced at $8,525.

A prototype of the 2024 Chevy Tahoe refresh

Production of the 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban kicked off at the GM Arlington plant in Texas on July 18th, 2022. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 Tahoe. The 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition can now be configured as well.

Beyond that, GM is already testing a refreshed 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban. Last March, our spies caught a prototype of the refreshed 2024 Tahoe undergoing testing. The upcoming model will feature revised front and rear fascias, with a new two-tiered lighting setup for the front end. Inside, the refreshed models will boast a revised cockpit and layout with larger infotainment screens and other improvements.

Even as the competition introduces new and updated models, Chevy continues to march ahead to help GM maintain control of the very lucrative full-size SUV segment – second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space. The Tahoe was GM’s fifth best-selling model in the U.S. for 2022, while the Tahoe and Suburban duo placed fourth. Combining Chevy’s duo with GMC’s Yukon and Yukon XL placed the SUVs in third, just behind the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size trucks, to account for 10 percent of all GM U.S. sales for 2022. Combined, those trucks and SUVs commanded a whopping 43 percent of sales for the automaker in the U.S. for 2022. Lucrative indeed.

  1. The sales numbers are ironic as I ordered a High Country Suburban with Diesel engine in December, 2021 and it’s under constraint. Would like some idea on when the order will get accepted.
