Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Express sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 kept the full-size van in third place from last quarter in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) remained in first place, as it has been year after year, posting a 48 percent bump in sales to 31,049 units, while the Ram ProMaster kept the second spot with a 33 percent increase to 18,905 units. The Express stayed in third with a segment-best 111 percent jump to 16,360 units and within about 2.5K deliveries of the Ram. The Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales) placed fourth with a seven percent slide to 9,927 units. The GMC Savana (see running GMC Savana sales), platform mate of the Express, took fifth and last place since the now-discontinued Nissan NV had no deliveries again this quarter, with 68 percent bump to 7,100 units.

The GM Authority Take

As we’ve noted time and time again, the Chevy Express, along with the GMC Savana, is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, and the duo remains by far the oldest models in their segment. They’re also the oldest GM vehicles currently in production.

The Express and Savana received a handful of minor changes for the 2022 model year, including the removal of the power window delete option, the transmission oil cooler, and the available CD player. Bigger changes were applied for the previous 2021 model year, such as the addition of the atmospheric 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine to replace the L96 motor (and its gaseous LC8 variant).

For the 2023 model year, the Express and Savana continue with minimal changes, though one noteworthy change is the deletion of the optional turbo-diesel 2.8L I4 LWN turbo-diesel Duramax engine. The 4.3L V6 LV1 and aforementioned L8T gasoline engines will remain.

The Chevy Express and GMC Savana both ride on the GM GMT 610 platform. Production of the 2023 Express and Savana began at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri on August 15th, 2022.

While the Express and Savana were thought to be discontinued after the 2025 model year, GM Authority learned this month that GM plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. Meanwhile, all-electric replacements are rumored for a 2026 debut.

  1. Isn’t this just a matter of how many units they are able (or willing) to produce?!! I feel like if they could build as many as people want, they would easily surpass the sales numbers of any other competitor. The fact that they have the only available V8 in class and body on frame construction makes it a far superior platform for many of the more demanding applications.

    1. You can’t even get a V8 in these vans for 2023. I’m still waiting for the one I ordered on 12/9/2021.

  2. I find it hard to believe sales are up if I can’t even get a van that I put a down payment on over 4 months ago! I find it also hard to believe this true cause when you call the gmc headquarters and ask them why you can’t get a van, they say they don’t even know why not! I can’t wait to bring this email to the three dealerships I have a deposit with! Sounds like it might be perfect proof to get my deposit back on a van I been really wanting for a while now. Very sad gmc is like this.

    1. 4 months, put your seatbelt on and get ready. It’s 20 months now for me I’ve been waiting and still no sign of them even accepting the order. 2 dealerships and 5 orders. Few more months and it’ll be 7 orders, maybe more. Get your deposits back if you can.

  4. Aug 2021 …. I was #4 on my dealer’s list if they ever would get a van allotment …. waited 12 months, they wouldn’t even place an order! gave up and waited 5 months for a Traverse. Will be my last GM purchase after 50 years of owning new GM vans.

  5. This is a joke general population can’t even get a new express van. I’ve been waiting for 14 months with ZERO communication from gm.

  6. I’ve had a GMC van for many years, never again. Well maintained but still fell apart. Cost a fortune to keep running. After a few years in a non-snow area the paint started peeling off. When I put a hose on van the paint came off in strips. Everywhere I look I see the same paint issue. GM can care less, too bad, not fixing it. I realize if you need a van, you need a van, not many choices. Bought two new Ford Transits, great vans! Much better than the old, tired GM vans. GM is making a killing, same van since 1995 on the GMT600 platform. The van received a refresh in 2003. Otherwise it’s the same old, tired interior-exterior. Very few safety features, outrageous in 2023 considering the price! Cash cow for greedy GM!

    1. Yeah, I do see that but the one I had bought used some 30 years ago was fantastically reliable after 6 day hard use for 10 years. Never broke down, no paint problem, and even the sliding doors worked. Except for a flat tire and a faulty ignition coil by Echlin (NAPA).

I hope they make ’em like they did 30 years ago.
