Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Colorado sales kept the midsize pickup in second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during the fourth quarter of 2022. The Toyota Tacoma continued to be the sales king of the segment with an 18 percent bump in sales to 61,451 units. The Colorado stayed in second place, as it has in Q3 2022 and Q2 2022, posting a four percent slide to 20,602 units during Q4 2022. However, the Colorado only earned a third of the Tacoma’s deliveries. The Nissan Frontier moved up to third with a 12 percent decline to 19,830 units. The Jeep Gladiator dropped to fourth with a four percent slip to 17,587 units, while the Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) remained in fifth with a segment-worst 51 percent drop to 10,712 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, placed last even though it was the only other model to be in the green besides the Tacoma, posting a four percent increase to 6,408 units.

Sales of GM’s two midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, combined for 27,010 deliveries and a cumulative 20 percent segment share, cementing The General’s second place spot in the segment while still moving less than half the units of the Tacoma.

The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment slid four percent to 136,590 units in Q4 2022, meaning Colorado sales were in line with the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments, placing it only above the Canyon in terms of sales.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Colorado sales remained in second place during the fourth quarter of 2022, which sounds great until we note that its sales volume was just a third of the Toyota Tacoma’s, and even the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon combined still had less than half the deliveries of Toyota’s segment-leading entry. The reasons behind the massive sales gap vary, but one of the key factors has to be GM’s decision to drop the Colorado and Canyon nameplates in 2012 – for which The General continues to pay the price today.

Supply issues during the past year have also contributed to lackluster sales volume, though new vehicle inventory for Chevy overall finally improved to just under the 60-day supply mark as of the end of November 2022.

Luckily, the all-new, third-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado is almost here, featuring a new exterior, a new powertrain, plenty of on-board technology and a completely revised interior. The new model rides on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road. The 2023 Colorado is available in five trim levels – WTLTZ71, ZR2, ZR2 with the Desert Boss package, and the first-ever Trail Boss, which was formerly offered as a package on some model years of the second-gen Colorado.

While a few components of the all-new model carry over from the current model, including some of the frame and cab structure, just about everything else was overhauled, including the sheetmetal, propulsion, and interior. Under the hood of the 2023 Chevy Colorado resides one engine – the turbocharged 2.7L I-4 gasoline engine, in three states of tune. The tunes range from 237 to 310 horsepower and from 259 pound-feet of torque to 390 and 430. As first reported by GM Authority, the base turbocharged 2.7L I4 engine will receive the L2R RPO Code while the two up-level tunes will carry the familiar L3B designation.

Gone for the 2023 model year are the three engines offered on the 2022 models, including the atmospheric 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine, atmospheric 3.6L V6 LGZ gasoline engine, and 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax. A second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission will handle cog swaps.

The 2023 Colorado also gets a new StowFlex Tailgate and new wheel designs up to 22 inches, plus a vast range of available accessories, with Chevy set to offer over 200 individual parts and components from the Chevrolet Accessories catalog.

Beyond the already-announced lineup, we’ve already spied the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison testing out in the wild. Originally debuting for the 2019 model year, the Bison takes the off-road-ready Chevy Colorado ZR2 to new heights of capability, throwing in a variety of improvements thanks to a collaboration with aftermarket manufacturer American Expedition Vehicles (AEV).

Production for most variants of the 2023 Chevy Colorado will commence at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri on January 25th, 2023, while production of the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will kick off in April of the 2023 calendar year. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 Colorado. Pricing for the 2023 Colorado starts at around $31K.

We expect the next-generation Colorado, along with its corporate relative, the GMC Canyon, to boost sales for GM, as the updates to the two models have the Tacoma squarely in their sights. The General even invested $1 billion in the Wentzville plant for producing the all-new midsize trucks. This year will tell us if The General’s bets have paid off.
