2024 GMC Sierra HD To Get Reduced 12-Volt Power Outlet Availability

The 2024 GMC Sierra HD introduces a mid-cycle refresh for the heavy-duty pickup, bringing styling updates, upgraded interior features and new trim levels. However, GM Authority has learned that 12-volt power outlets have been eliminated from almost all of the Sierra HD trim levels.

In the 2024 GMC Sierra HD, the front auxiliary 12-volt power outlet (RPO code KC5) will appear only in the base Pro trim, but will disappear in SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali variants. It will also be absent in the two new trims introduced by GMC, the powerful, luxurious Denali Ultimate and the off-road oriented AT4X. The front-seat 12-volt outlet was previously standard on all 2023 GMC Sierra HD trim levels.

Meanwhile, the rear auxiliary 12-volt power outlet (RPO code KPA) is likewise absent from all 2024 GMC Sierra HD trims, though it was previously unavailable on the 2023 model-year Pro trim. This outlet was standard on 2023 SLT, AT4, and Denali trims, and optionally available on the 2023 SLE as part of the SLE Convenience Package (PCQ).

Front and rear 12-volt auxiliary power outlets were similarly eliminated from most trims of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD. GM will continue offering household-style 400-watt, 120-volt power outlets in the 2024 GMC Sierra HD. These outlets will be located in the instrument panel and cargo bed.

The 12-volt outlet removal is part of a larger Sierra HD mid-cycle refresh rolled out in the 2024 model year. Some eagerly anticipated updates include a revamped interior for all trim levels, with luxury interior details for the SLT, AT4, and Denali trims.

The GM Sierra HD exterior receives refreshed fascia, grille, and front bumper styling this year, along with six new paint color options, including Titanium Rush Metallic, Sterling Metallic, Volcanic Red Tintcoat, Redwood Metallic, Meteorite Metallic, and Downpour Metallic. Simultaneously, GM is retiring six paint colors, namely Cayenne Red Tintcoat, Ebony Twilight Metallic, Forest Metallic, Hunter Metallic, Quicksilver Metallic, and Pacific Blue Metallic.

Additional updates include GM making Automatic Emergency Braking (RPO code UHY) standard across all trims. All trims will also receive standard IntelliBeam headlights that automatically switch high beams on or off depending on the presence of oncoming traffic. In addition, the 2024 GM Sierra HD lineup receives GCW Alert to monitor gross combination weight while towing.

GMC expects the 2024 GMC Sierra HD will steal significant sales from competitors in addition to strong purchases from highly loyal repeat customers. Start of regular production (SORP) is scheduled for February 2023.

  1. Stupid move GM! Your included USB/ wireless charging spots are NOT fast charge!

    1. Exactly. It wouldn’t be as bad if they added Quick Charge 3.0 or USB-PD outlets inside instead of the underpowered ones.

  2. Man that is so lame! I don’t want to have to start the engine to turn on the inverter, just to have to turn around and grab an AC charger for high speed charging! My GMC has faster charging USB ports than most, but it’s still only half of what my 45w 12v charger does for my phone.

  3. I use my 12v outlets for many applications while working, towing, camping and most importantly, keeping the kids entertainment charged/powered while i do those. GM, I’m sure we all could pitch in a couple extra bucks on top of the $75k+ price tag… I’m sure those 12v outlets are budget breakers.

    1. *aren’t budget breakers.

    2. They are making a horrible choice. Plus the USB ports they added aren’t even quick charge or power delivery, making charging very slow or even impossible on some devices. The AC outlets require you to turn on every time you start the vehicle. It’s just a dumb thing GM is doing. If GM keeped 12v outlets in the vehicle, our family would have actually considered them for our next SUV, but right now, we are mostly set on buying a Ford.

    3. This was stupid move by GM. What do we now do with our 12 volt spotlights, battery chargers for tools etc?

  4. This is the dumbest thing I have heard. Guess I’m switching to Ford. At least with their truck I can run powersaws and air compressors. I guess GM decided they not longer want to build a real truck anymore.

    1. Yeah – Im sure this will cause someone to buy a ford. Get real.

      1. Actually it would. Our family is looking for an SUV, it is going to either be a Ford Expedition MAX or a GMC Yukon XL. Well the lack of 12v ports in the GMC is definitely having us edge toward Ford. We use it a lot. The GMC built in USB ports aren’t QC or USB-PD enabled. It’s slow charging. The 400W 120V is no replacement, plus it is a waste of electricity to convert that back down to 12v. 400W is probably like 2 laptops and a few chargers. You can’t use it for anything else. Plus people use radar detectors and other things that require 12v. With people, especially high tech workers still WFH, people are doing it on the road from remote areas, sometimes even with Starlink. Too bad you can’t do that with GM vehicles anymore.

      2. I know several individuals who have bought Fords for this very reason. They needed the 12v outlet and GM would not install it. I have argued with GM since I received my new pickup in November. I cant use my safety strobe lights or 12 V accessories. My other complaint is the vehicle only idles for 15 minutes when using the 110 V outlet. I pay for the gas. Don’t tell me how long I choose to leave it run. Not happy and unless things change, my next vehicle will be a new Ford.

      3. If GM is reading this, our family is picking up our new custom Ford Expedition once it arrives at the dealer. The main reason for this is due to the lack of 12V outlets inside the GM vehicles, and you guys deciding it’s a good idea to remove an Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I know this is just a one sale, but I hope your marketing team can see this and how I’m not the only one that made a choice just because you guys decided to exclude a $10 part and try to charge subscription fees for Google Maps (I have seen complaints about offline maps just disappearing within days after being downloaded which I suspect is intentional).

  5. where do I plug in my radar detector and many other items that use 12 v power. 100K FOR MY NEW 3500 ULTIMATE and cant get a 12 v plug. This is pathetic GM

  6. I have one of the new 1500′ Sierra’s without the 12-volt outlets. I never imagined how much of a pain in the butt it would be. Yes, I have an adapter. But so many things use this from emergency lights to radar detectors to dashcams to portable oxygen generators. What a dumb, dumb idea. I wonder what marketing idiot made this decision?

    1. I would not have bought my 2024 had I known everything I was givng up – shame on me for not doing the research – plus the need to subscribe to onstar to get navigation – back to the days of using my garmin – but wait – it has a 12 volt plug – MORAN is the term that comes to mind with the idiot GM Engineer that removed the 12volt plug. What adapter did you buy – I don’t think the USB or USC ports put out sufficient voltage for a 12 volt adapter – but I don’t know. The dealer doesn’t know.

  7. In simple language, the cigarette lighter is gone. I was going to plug my radar detector in my new 2024, but there’s no cigarette lighter! Darn, now I need to hard-wire the radar detector.

  8. Yeah – We do a lot of work on projects in the middle of nowhere and I have a nice 12V compressor I use for the truck as well as any ATVs, trailers or other things that need it. Seriously GM – it’s a truck with a 12V battery and you don’t have one 12V outlet?

How stupid is it to use a 12V to 120V inverter and then have to step it back down to 12V to use common vehicle accessories.

    1. Does anyone know how to contact GM directly – either through phone, fax or email? I’d sure like to lodge a complaint.

      1. The number I use is for GM tech. (877) 558-8352. They can forward your call to the right person. I am going to start calling every week and ask them when they are going to install a 12v power port in my truck. There is going to be one in my truck even if it takes a lawyer to get it.

        1. Lol! You’re delusional.

          Reply
          1. You are the delusional one who stands back and does not make their voice heard about the changes going on at GM. Excepting what is given to you rather than telling GM what you want will lead to you driving an EV and having no other option because you are a follower.
When I ordered my 2024 pickup, there was no 2024 pickup to test drive. The 2023 GMC I test drove had the 12V plug. Not even the dealer at the time I ordered my pickup was aware that the necessary option would be eliminated. I have options. If GM refuses to add the 12V plug, I don’t have to buy another GM.
It is individuals like you who think they have to except every decision made for them and never say anything to object, that have led GM to think they can do what ever they want and sheep like you will happily buy their product. I was going to purchase a new Camaro. Guess what? I won’t be doing so now after GM decided they will terminate production. I WILL have the option to purchase a new Mustang though. See what happens when a manufacturer listens.

        2. That is delusional. There are no laws that says a vehicle must have a 12v outlet. Any lawyer that agrees to take on your case is just in it for your money. I hate how GM doesn’t include them, but they are under no obligation to include them.

          1. You are also the delusional one who stands back and does not make their voice heard about the changes going on at GM. You and Drew except what is given to you rather than telling GM what you want and that will also lead to you to driving an EV and having no other option because you are a follower. There is no law that says that plug has to be there. Correct. When I ordered my 2024 pickup, there was no 2024 pickup to test drive. The 2023 GMC I test drove had the 12V plug. Not even the dealer at the time I ordered my pickup was aware that the necessary option would be eliminated. I consider it bait and switch. I need that plug as my vehicle was purchased for very specific uses. Had I known I would have to Install one myself, I would have purchased a Ford. Now GM will hear from me regularly. Doing so may result in my voice being heard. Or, when my attorney files the paperwork, maybe they will wake up and decide a $10 plug, can be installed at their expense. You see, unlike you, I will be heard. And if they don’t like hearing me. I don’t require their vehicle. Ford offers a pickup that meets my needs as well. That’s what makes freedom a thing worth fighting for.

        3. I spoke with my dealer svc dept – the tech said he might be able to “rig” one by ordering parts for something that has it “naturally” – no guarantees, but it is a breadcrumb – if they install it – they have to stand by it (or so I’m told)

          Reply
          1. That’s a start. Let us know how they install it. I continue to push my dealer into adding one to mine.
            Thanks

            1. Met with the dealer today – the technician said he could do it – totally custom (obviously), parts around $70 w/inline fuse, however, the cost is estimated at $471 – parts plus 2 hours labor. I just bought a 120 ac to 12v dc converter from Amazon for $25. Will test this out (obviously the truck has to be running) to see if it works for my GPS and inflator. He (the technician) was aghast at not finding a port or some allowance for a 12v plug – super super DUMB on GM’s part. He also said the USB and USC ports couldn’t be used for a converter as there wasn’t enough power behind them. It’s obvious GM doesn’t care what its owners are saying. Not sure I will spend the $471 – we’ll see.

  9. They should have at least added one12v power port preferably one hot all the time , like in my older GMC truck !

  10. stupid decision. Spend this much on a truck and no 12v Power socket or an owners manual. Had to pay $80 for a printed owners manual. I guess when you have that woman as CEO you can’t expect anything else.
Shouldn’t have to rip your dash trim off to install your own.

  11. My other issue is that since there are no 12V plugs I decided to order a 120v air pump. So I returned the 12V one that I had ordered and bought the 120V plug in. Even that doesn’t work on the truck. But it does work from the home 120V outlet. Yes, I had the truck running.
