The refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup is almost here, with production set to begin next month at the GM Flint assembly plant in Michigan. Even with the production start so close, we’re still discovering new details about the upcoming heavy-duty pickup, and now, GM Authority has learned that the Sierra HD lineup will get standard IntelliBeam headlamps.
The IntelliBeam headlamps with automatic high beam on/off function (RPO code TQ5) will be equipped as standard across the entire Sierra HD lineup, including all trims on both the 2500 HD and 3500 HD pickups.
It’s worth noting that on the 2023 GMC Sierra HD lineup, the IntelliBeam headlamps weren’t offered at all on the base Pro trim level, and were part of the Driver Alert Package II (PDJ) on SLE, SLT and AT4 trims. In addition, this feature was standard affair on the Denali trim level.
As a reminder, the GMC Sierra HD pickup truck boasts the most loyal customer base of all GMC models, as well as a high conquest rate over customers of other brands. As such, the popular heavy-duty pickups mid-cycle refresh puts GMC in an advantageous position to develop an even stronger customer base.
In regards to the refresh itself, the 2024 Sierra HD introduces a revised front fascia, reworked cockpit, updated powertrains, and the introduction of the all-new Denali Ultimate trim level. This range-topping trim is notable for its Vader Chrome exterior bits, which give the pickup a more sinister visual. Later this year, the all-new GMC Sierra HD AT4X will debut as well.
On the outside, the revised front fascia will include updates to the grille and bumper, along with six new exterior paint colors. Meanwhile, the SLE and SLT trim levels get a unique interior treatment, while the AT4, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims are granted a more premium interior design inspired by the one in the Sierra 1500.
Under the hood, most of the 2024 GMC.Sierra HD lineup is equipped with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine as standard, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Included on the Denali Ultimate, and optional on all other trims, is the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, uprated to produce 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.
No matter the engine choice, every 2024 Sierra HD is equipped with the Allison-branded GM 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. It replaces the GM six-speed automatic used by gasoline models prior to the mid-cycle refresh. Currently, official pricing is unknown, with more details expected closer to the start of production.

This truck looks extremely cheap and plastically why would anyone want this crap?
“intellibeam” ? We must have had a GM truck with “Dumbtellibeam” follow us for 12 miles a few nights back because the dratted thing kept switching those blinding High-Beams on when disturbingly close to us. Reflections in all three mirrors were blinding and with our local Deer population being still very active the only way to shut his Dumbtellibeam high-beams off so I wasn’t blinded, was to step on our vehicle’s brakes to illuminate the center, high-mounted brake lights which the Dumbtellibeam finally decided to recognize, after repeatedly ignoring our very bright LED taillights, and shut the blinding high-beam headlights off on the too-close GM truck following behind us. Another costly “gadget” that has to function correctly or become a driving-safety hazard to other motorists.
I have a GMC with the “intellibeam” function. I have it turned off. I tried it once or twice, didn’t like it. It didn’t turn off the high beams soon enough for on coming vehicles IMHO. This feature is another example of: just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should. Or, adding cost to a vehicle for little if any real benefit. Also, this probably takes another short-in-supply “chip” to operate. Bah Hum Bug…
To me it’s a tech option that shouldn’t exist. I haven’t heard of one vehicle that has this option that works like it needs to! Dang, how much of this self driving stuff do we need. Anything that helps in the safety of driving I’m 100% behind. Dimming your own lights kinda forces you to be aware of on coming vehicles and where they are in relationship to the lane in which he or she may be in, theirs or yours. Just one little thing to help keep you alert and focused on what we should be focused on, driving! My 2¢
I LIKE the “Intellibeam” option. True it doesn’t work sometimes, like when there is dew on the windshield or very cold. But 90% of the time it does what it was intended to do. When I see that it’s not working correctly I USE MY BRAIN and just turn it off with a punch of the button on the turn signal How hard is that? The objective is to help you see better in dark areas. Studies show a large proportion of drivers do not use their high beams even though it would allow them to see better.
When Intellibeam is not working properly, you turn it off, but what if that is the one time another driver is blinded and runs off the road or into you?
I turn my fog lights on and it defaults the intellibeam to “off.”
Are heated seats available on the 2024 HD?
I would way rather have something useful like self leveling headlights when pulling a trailer. I drove a Ford at work with intellibeam headlights and it drove me nuts. Almost never reacted the way I would myself, and was easily thrown off by glares and weather conditions.
Don’t worry once you buy it it won’t work, due to a chip shortage somewhere or someplace or Covid or plant slow down or some other lame excuse. GM will sell the truck with a promised retrofit and never it will never actually be available after you purchase and agree to wait a few months while they clear the backlog.
Still whining about this huh? We get it, you are behind on getting a retro fit for your luxury feature, well you bought during this time and knew what was coming…
