2024 GMC Sierra HD Gets Standard Automatic Emergency Braking

GM debuted the fully refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD last October, pulling the sheets on new exterior styling, an updated interior, a revised trim level lineup, and changes to the powertrain as well. Among the many onboard tech features is Automatic Emergency Braking, which is now equipped as standard across the lineup.

Of course, Automatic Emergency Braking (RPO code UHY) isn’t the only safety tech onboard the 2024 GMC Sierra HD. The refreshed heavy-duty pickup is also equipped with several other standard safety features, including (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

To note, Automatic Emergency Braking was previously offered as optional on 2023 GMC Sierra HD Pro, SLE, SLT, and AT4 trim levels, while equipped as standard for the 2023 GMC Sierra HD Denali. Forward Collision Alert was also optional for 2023-model-year Pro, SLE, SLT, and AT4 trim levels, and standard for the 2023 GMC Sierra HD Denali.

Meanwhile, Lane Departure Warning and Following Distance Indicator were offered as optional for 2023 GMC Sierra HD SLE, SLT, and AT4 trim levels, and equipped as standard for the 2023 GMC Sierra HD Denali. Both features were not available for the 2023 GMC Sierra HD Pro.

Finally, Front Pedestrian Braking is a new addition to the lineup for the 2024 model year.

Further changes for the 2024 GMC Sierra HD include availability for the IntelliBeam headlamps with automatic high beam on / off functionality (RPO code TQ5), which are now included as standard from all trim levels of the refreshed pickup. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD also offers a revised exterior paint options list, with six new colors now on the docket.

As for the greasy bits, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD is equipped as standard with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which is now connected to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission, rather than the GM six-speed automatic equipped by gasoline-fueled GMC Sierra HD models prior to the refresh. The optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, which is now uprated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque.

Under the skin is a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform. Production will begin next month at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.
