2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Gets Power-Operated Swing Gate

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV offers a range of interesting features, with performance, off-roading, comfort, and utility all covered. With regard to utility, one of those noteworthy features is the Hummer EV SUV’s power-operated swing gate.

The power-operated swing gate is included as standard equipment across the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV trim level lineup (EV2, EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1). Interesting, the rear swing gate is programmable, and can be configured so that it does not fully open in a garage or tight parking space, similar to the programmable, height-adjustable lift gates offered by other SUVs.

Notably, the GMC Hummer EV SUV’s power-operated swing gate helps to set it apart from the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the latter of which incorporates the manually-operated MultiPro tailgate with six functional load/access features and EZ Lift operation.

The inclusion of a power-operated swing gate also sets the GMC Hummer EV apart from other utility vehicles in the U.S., as the vast majority of vehicles in the segment offer a lift gate (hinge at the roof, opening vertically), rather than a swing gate (hinge on the side, opening horizontally). The Lexus GX and and Ford EcoSport are a few other examples of utility vehicles that offer a swing gate, rather than a lift gate.

General Motors revealed the all-new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV in April, expanding the Hummer EV lineup with a boxy utility vehicle body style in parallel to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. Under the skin, the Hummer EV SUV rides on the GM BT1 architecture, a dedicated all-electric platform that also underpins the new Chevy Silverado EV and new GMC Sierra EV.

Motivation is sourced from GM’s Ultium battery technology and GM’s Ultium drive motor technology, with two output levels available – 625 horsepower from EV2 and EV2X trim levels, and 830 horsepower from EV3X and Edition 1 trim levels. Range-per-charge tops out at roughly 300 miles. Production takes place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.

  1. I recently rented a Toyota Land cruiser with a swing gate. One of the most inconvenient features of that vehicle. Firstly if another vehicle is parked behind you fairly close you can’t access it. If you can partially open and it opens to the curb, you’re standing in the traffic to load the vehicle. Traveling through Iceland changing locations every other day meant walking around the swing gate to load luggage, a huge nuisance. Opening away from the curb would have been much more convenient and easier to load. By the looks of picture the Hummer EV opens to the curb. Wrong side??

  2. Swing gate? Another non-feature. What fifth year Kettering student dreamed that up?

  3. They should have done a split tailgate. Say the bottom 12 inches of the tailgate folds down while the top section flips up. Provides a tailgate to sit on without getting dirty from pants rubbing against bumper.
