2024 Chevy Silverado HD Gets Standard Automatic Emergency Braking

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD got its big debut last September, with The General pulling the sheets on a full model refresh that includes new exterior styling, a reworked cabin, powertrain updates, and fresh technology features. Notably, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD’s safety tech feature list now includes Automatic Emergency Braking as standard equipment.

The Automatic Emergency Braking feature for the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD is tagged with RPO code UHY, and automatically applies the brakes if an imminent collision is detected.

Naturally, Automatic Emergency Braking isn’t the only safety tech included as standard with the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD refresh. The heavy-duty pickup also includes the following (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

  • Front Pedestrian Braking (UKJ)
  • Forward Collision Alert (UEU)
  • Following Distance Indicator (UE4)
  • Lane Departure Warning (UFL)

Notably, Front Pedestrian Braking is a new addition for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD.

Previously, the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD offered Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Alert as optional for WT, Custom, LTZ, and High Country trim levels. Both features were not offered at all for the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD LT.

Meanwhile, Lane Departure Warning and Following Distance Indicator were previously only optional for the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD LTZ and High Country trim levels, and were not offered at all for WT, Custom, or LT trim levels.

As GM Authority covered last month, most 2023-model-year Chevy vehicles include Automatic Emergency Braking as a standard feature. The feature’s inclusion as standard for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD expands on this even further. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), emergency braking is very important for pickup trucks, with a recent IIHS study indicating a 43-percent crash reduction rate for trucks equipped with the feature.

As for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD specs, powerplant options include the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine as standard, as as well as the optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine as optional. Under the skin is the more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform, while production will take place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan and GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
