The 2023 Buick Encore GX represents the fourth model year of the Tri-Shield brand’s subcompact crossover. Coming in a year before the Encore GX receives a mid-cycle refresh, Consumer Reports has given the 2023 Buick Encore GX a “recommended” rating.
This “recommended” rating is the result of the following scores:
- Road test rating – 68/100
- Owner satisfaction rating – 2/5
- Predicated reliability rating – 3/5
These three sections result in an overall score of 65 points out of a maximum 100.
In regards to performance, CR gave the Buick Encore GX a 5/5 for braking, a 4/5 for transmission and emergency handling, and a 3/5 for acceleration. CR noted that the crossover features a surprisingly powerful powertrain, yet feels unrefined overall as compared to its competition.
For the Owner Satisfaction section, owners rank the driving experience as 69/100, comfort as 70/100, and value at 57/100.
When it comes to reliability, the Encore GX received a score of 55/100. This places the crossover at the top half of its segment only losing to the Volvo XC 40 and Lexus UX, which had scores of 57/100 and 67/100, respectively. Notably, the Encore GX beat out the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X2, and Mercedes-Benz GLA, which posted scores of 53/100, 50/100, and 25/100, respectively.
Collectively, General Motors performed well in CR’s latest list of recommended vehicles. The Buick Encore GX was joined by the Buick Enclave, C8 Corvette, Chevy Blazer, Chevy Trailblazer, Chevy Equinox, and Chevy Traverse in garnering a “recommended” rating.
As a reminder, the 2023 Buick Encore GX is available with two engine options, including the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which produces 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, which develops 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. To route this output to the ground, the Tri-Shield brand crossover is equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) in FWD configuration, or the GM nine-speed automatic transmission in AWD configuration.
Under the skin lies the GM VSS-F vehicle set, while production takes place at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea. It’s worth noting that Chinese-spec models are produced at the SAIC-GM Dongyue South plant in China.

Too bad Americans don’t want to buy buicks. 140 days supply on the lot!
3 cylinder, CVT. I’ll pass!
No point to these 3 cyl. engines when they don’t even get great gas mileage. Just use the 1.5T or 2.0T and the car would be far more appealing to many consumers. Better still, make the Encore a true hybrid (50+MPG) and you’d have a real winner.
Barra quit Opel because, supposedly, it’s future vehicles didn’t align w/N America and China. A 3 banner is classic European, Envision is a perfect fit, Insignia/Regal & varients, Chinese Enclace, not to mention Electra line up.
Barra needs to go! I used to think people were over reacting but, currently, there are only 4 GM products I find appealing.
