The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 introduced a mid-cycle refresh that included revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, powertrain changes, and new trim levels. Unfortunately, 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 production was also mired by numerous supply chain issues, including constraints on the heated steering wheel feature, but now, GM Authority has learned that retrofits for the heated steering wheel are currently under way.
For those who may have missed it, certain units of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 produced before March 28th of the 2022 calendar year were built without a heated steering wheel (RPO code KI3). Typically, the heated steering wheel is included as standard for all trim levels of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with the exception of the base-level Pro. Units of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 that would normally be equipped with a heated steering wheel, but were affected by last year’s constraint, were indicated at such on the window sticker with RPO code 00G.
As some readers will no doubt recall, the heated steering wheel is one of many features offered by the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 that were affected by constraints during production. Some of the other features that were affected include:
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Ventilated front seat cushion blower motors
- Heated rear outboard seats
- Steering column locks
- Rear-seat USB ports
- Rear park assist
- Front and rear park assist
- Rear wheelhouse liners
- Hood insulators
It’s also worth mentioning that Dynamic Fuel Management was removed from certain atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 engines.
As a reminder, the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 offered four engine options total. These include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine.
The GMC Sierra 1500 rides on the GM T1 platform, while production took place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico.

Sweet! I have a GMC 2500HD waiting on heated steering wheel retrofit for just over a year. I suspect GM will get to the HD trucks relatively soon. If anyone has actually had the heated steering wheel retrofit completed, please share the experience here for what to expect on timing from the announcement to actual retrofit and the retrofit process. My truck doesn’t habe the heated steering wheel button, which I think is just a change out of the button cluster, then a module and programming. Two weeks ago I had the heated and vented seat retrofit completed. The truck already had the seat buttons, so they instaled the module and programed the computer and I was out of there in 45 minutes. Perhaps GM is under a little more pressure now that many of these vehicles are reaching 1 year in service.
2022HD owner, just had seats done as well. Retrofit announced in Sept 22 my truck did not come up for retrofit until December and waited 2 weeks to get parts after contacting dealer. Took about 2 hours from drop off to drive off.
My consistent complaint has always been NO communication by GM. No letter from GM yet saying my truck retrofit was released and I should contact a dealer.
But I get a call every 4-6 weeks saying I should upgrade extend ONStar.
I as well, just had my heated/vented seats retrofit done 2 weeks ago and my truck also came up for the recall in December. I also had the buttons and just needed the module and the programming done. Actually kind of stoked for the steering wheel retrofit because they will be replacing the steering wheel completely with a brand new one (new leather!!). From my understanding, the wiring harness is already installed and just sitting capped off within the steering column waiting to just get plugged into the new wheel. Hoping to get it done before the cold months end so I can enjoy it for a little bit.
Still waiting for my notifications to install heated wheel, collision avoidance and heated seats on a 22 SLT.
“Hello, How many new F-150 XLT’s on your lot?”
I have been a GM person my entire life currently driving a 2019 GMC Sierra SLT fully loaded. I have been trying to buy a 2022 or23 Sierra SLT crew cab for over a year and GM seems to wanna do is shove the Denali and the 5.3 engine down are throut. I have the 6.2 and always have had the bigger engine and I refuse to pay an additional 10 to 15000 for a Denali badge. Not to mention having to pay 70 to 80,000 for something the fource you to buy. By, by GM
I have been waiting for heated steering wheel as well on my 2022 Sierra purchased over 16 months ago. Should we be considering a class action suit? Hard to believe it hasn’t been reversed engineered yet!
Talked to my dealer May 15th. He said no updates from GM and they have not done any heated steering wheel retrofits on any vehicles. He doesn’t have any new information but asked me to call him back in 2 weeks. I hate that GM does this to their dealers. What a waste of everybody’s time. It’s very disappointing after all this time GM has not learned their lesson to improve their communication with their customers. There should be a mandatory communication on the 1st of every month to all their customers on the status of all of their retrofits. They did give me 6 months extension for the app on my phone so that I can check my tire pressure and fuel level remotely. And lock the door and lock the horn using my phone. And they gave me $125 in parts credits which I applied to my GM financing balance. So at least there is some recognition of the amount of time that has passed and the need to respond to customers.
Has anyone heard anything on this lately?
Received my 2022 GMC at4 2500 HD in January of 2022. Received the heated steering wheel retrofit first week of July 2023. They had to replace the steering wheel and the entire job took 35 minutes.
