Of the 16 nameplates that make up GM crossover sales, only four experienced a decrease in overall sales volume. The top three fastest-growing were the compact Chevy Equinox with a 44 percent increase to 46,646 units, the full-size Chevy Traverse with a 136 percent jump to 25,388 units, and the compact GMC Terrain with a 81 percent bump to 17,917 units. On a combined basis, these three models commanded nearly half of overall GM crossover sales, or a 44 percent share.
Chevy models accounted for the majority, or 61 percent, of overall GM crossover sales, partially due to the Equinox’s popularity and the number of models fielded by the Bow Tie brand when compared to The General’s other U.S. brands. Specifically, Chevy makes up seven of the 16 crossovers fielded by GM in its home market, including two all-electric utilities currently on sale, the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. Cumulatively they posted a 226 percent leap in sales to 14,709 units, accounting for seven percent of overall GM crossover sales.

GMC accounted for 16 percent of overall sales even with its two crossovers, followed by Buick at 15 percent with four crossovers – the only vehicles remaining in the marque’s lineup. Finally, Cadillac accounted for nine percent of U.S. GM crossover sales with three models.
Buyers may cross-shop body-on-frame SUV equivalents to unibody crossovers, especially those that are similarly sized like the Chevy Tahoe SUV and Traverse crossover. Buick in the only GM brand that doesn’t offer body-on-frame SUVs. Looking at combined GM utility vehicle sales comprised of crossovers and SUVs, deliveries were up 27 percent to 281,265 units. Overall utility sales were up six percentage points compared to SUV sales, showing similar trends.

When including SUVs in the mix, Chevy still commanded over half of total GM utility sales, or the same 61 percent as when looking only at crossovers, followed by GMC with an 18 percent share and Buick and Cadillac each with a 10 percent share. The Bow Tie brand took the top three spots, still led by the Equinox, followed by the Tahoe with a 22 percent increase in sales to 29,585 units and the Traverse. In other words, Chevy utilities were GM’s top-three sellers, accounting for over a third of all sales, or 37 percent.
During a presentation given at the recent GM Investor Day event held this past November, GM President Mark Reuss touched on a wide variety of forthcoming vehicles from across the GM brand spectrum. Those include several next-generation crossovers and more electric vehicles.

So I’m told that if you wish to make a point, you need to shout it from the roof tops daily. Otherwise the fight dies and nothing changes.
With that, I’m going to bring up my take on these numbers and how I equate them to the sedan market. According to this article, YTD total sales of the 23 models (all SUV/CUV’s if you include the Bolt EV which I feel is a car) come to 798,000 in total. Divide that by the 23 models and it comes to just under 35,000 sales per model. Let’s take the Bolt EV out and we come up with just over 36,000 sales per unit on average.
For reference, the last reported sales numbers for the Chevy Malibu only (YTD) come to 79,800. Yup, sedans don’t sell do they? (sarcasm)
Cruze was GM’s top selling vehicle yet was cut so what does that mean for Malibu? Supposedly sedans are less profitable ending up with lower MSRP, discounted, sold as fleet; however, the same is happening now with Nox, Trax & others.
I hope another midsized sedan, whether Malibu or FNR-XE, makes it to market. Honda, Toyota, Kia, Hyandai, VW have no problem selling sedans. Not everyone wants a dorky CUV or faux sporty SUV.
I’ve always favored GM, only person under 40 to like Regal & TourX, but will probably end up with a Honda or Acura sedan.
StevenInvictainsignia: You make a good point with the discounted/fleet thing. If you don’t have sedans to put into fleet/rental use, guess what? They will fill those spots with something and it will (already is) be the CUV’s and SUV’s. Then history will repeat itself. Like I’ve said before, this business is cyclical for sure.
So why say you will probably end up with a Honda or Acura? Why not a Malibu or CT4/CT5?
With three models accounting for 44% of sales it’s obvious GM has a lot of dead weight offerings that only appeal to niche demographic segments.
Obviously Suburban, Yukon, Escalade sell at great price points making them worth investment but Trailblazer, Encore GX and even Blazer need replacements that appeal to a larger segment of buyers.
FCA cut many duplicate models because, even though a reskin is cheap, there is too much cannibalization. This is why Traverse, a great vehicle, is stuck in 3ed place.
