Take A Ride In A Cruise AV: Video

GM’s autonomous vehicle technology division, Cruise, launched its paid customer ride service over the summer, and now we’re watching the recent autonomous driving experience of one Cruise customer thanks to the following brief video.

Clocking in at just under four minutes, 30 seconds, the video was recently posted online by a Cruise customer who took his first ride on December 9th, 2022. The video was captured in San Francisco, California, which is currently the only city where Cruise offers paid customer rides.

After calling for a pickup, we see the Cruise AV arrive roughly four minutes later. The AV appears to wait at an intersection, possibly because it looks like the riders may be crossing the street, but after the riders back up onto the sidewalk, the AV continues forward, pulling over for the pickup.

At this point in the video, something a little weird happens. As the riders walk up to the Cruise AV, it starts to slowly drive away. When the riders catch back up and reach for the door handle, the AV drives away again. However, after approaching the AV from the side, the AV finally remains stationary, allowing the passengers to board.

After unlocking the door using the Cruise app and buckling up on the rear bench, the AV finally gets underway, providing some helpful tips to the riders via the onboard stereo. The riders use touchscreens mounted on the back of the front seats to select some music for the journey.

Later in the video, the passengers decide to stop the ride early using the large “End Ride” button on the ceiling. As soon as the button is pressed, the AV pulls over to the curb and calls Cruise support to ensure everything is ok.

Looking ahead, Cruise is hoping to secure authorization to deploy its driverless Origin robotaxi on the streets of San Francisco, and has plans to enter more markets starting next year. It is also worth mentioning that the National High Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently opened a formal safety probe into the company.
