Here’s When 2024 GMC Sierra HD Production Will Start

Featuring a revised exterior, an upgraded cockpit, and a few powertrain changes, the upcoming mid-cycle refresh for the 2024 GMC Sierra HD has been hotly anticipated. First announced back in October, many have been wondering when the updated heavy-duty pickup will begin production. Now, GM Authority has learned it will commence next year.

Sources close to the matter have exclusively told GM Authority that the start of regular production (SORP) of the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD is currently scheduled for February 2023.

In case you missed it, here’s the lowdown on the mid-cycle refresh of the HD trucks. The 2024 GMC Sierra is highlighted by the introduction of an all-new trim level, the Denali Ultimate. These models are distinguished by Vader chrome exterior pieces, 20-inch Ultra-bright wheels, and a unique Alpine Umber interior appointment.

On the outside, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD features revisions to the front fascia, which include the bumper and grille, as well as six new exterior colors.

Moving inside, the revised truck gets unique interior treatments for SLE and SLT trims, as well as a more premium interior design for AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim.

Heavy-duty trucks are expected to pull a mountain’s worth of weight, and the Sierra HD is no exception. To the end, the max towing figures are rated at up to 21,900 pounds for 2500 HD and up to 36,000 pounds for 3500 HD.

As for powertrain, the 2024 Sierra HD is equipped as standard with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which is rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Optional is the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, which is now uprated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. This represents a 25 horsepower and a 65 pound-feet of torque upgrade over the pre-refreshed models.

Regardless of engine choice, every truck is equipped with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission. This 10-speed replaces the GM six-speed used by gasoline models prior to the mid-cycle refresh.

Official pricing is currently unknown, as more details are expected closer to the start of production.

  1. If GM comes out with a lighter color, I’ll buy one. If not, I’ll pass….. Why? Because lighter colors such as QuickSilver Metallic, Summit White, etc. doesn’t show the dirt like all darker colors. It’s next to impossible to keep a clean vehicle with the four seasons here the midwest for over a couple days or so. Dark colors are beautiful when clean but, look like hell when not. Simply put, lighter colors don’t show the dirt as darker vehicles do. Come on GM, give us a choice of a lighter color.

    1. I think it’s safe to assume the ’24 will offer all the traditional light color options. The ’23 HD for example offers Summit White, White Frost Tricoat, Quicksilver Metallic, and Cardinal Red on the light or bright spectrum.

        1. The ’24 AT4 they have been showing in the media (including this article) and on GMC’s website is white. I could be wrong but that article is probably naming the new colors for ’24 vs all colors for ’24. I could see the Ultimate trim possibly being offered in fewer colors but I honestly don’t think the basic light colors are going away.

          1. I’m sorry, I should have mentioned only the Denali’s and the Denali Ultimate.

            1. I did say when it listed all of these colors that it would be in addition to pre-existing colors. I had the same thought process because I love that green for years past and want it in my new truck that I am planning on ordering

        2. Negotiators will always speak with your paint department, next negotiations are the absolute selling point. My dealer goes above and beyond for many of us here in Kansas, they are not push – overs, nor pushy, and great coffee. Work with your dealership or find one you like; We met our paint department, maintenance services supervisor prior to purchase, we were purchasing assurances that quality individuals backed their sales team, once we were satisfied with our dealership, only then did we make our purchase.

  4. From the few videos that I’ve seen for 2023, it looks like GM is still wax coating the frames on the sierra and silverado:
    No e-coating.

  5. It’s great to hear they are going to make 2024 models. What I would really like to know is when the hell are they going to deliver my 2022 that I ordered over a year ago. 3500HD SLT Duramax. Ordered November 2021.
Still waiting for any word on it . Dealer says they have no info from GM
I was told in February that it was built. Told in March it had a faulty engine. August they said they have a tracking number for shipping since they repaired/replaced the engine. No new news since August.
I have talked to others in similar positions, I’m not the only one.

  6. I’m stunned here. I ordered a 2023 2500HD and not a mention on when they are going to build it. 1 month since order, no confirmation. Here today the incentives are on for that year truck, well I miss that deal too. NEVER a mention about this 2023 current build, just the Feb 2023 start date for the 2024…..What’s up?? Called 3 times in customer service and they are clueless.
