As GM gears up to launch the refreshed 2024 Silverado HD early next year, the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD remains mostly unchanged over the preceding 2022 model. Today, GM Authority is breaking down 2023 Silverado HD towing capacities.
To begin, let’s review the powertrain options. The 2023 Silverado HD is available with two different engines, the first being the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which is rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The second one is the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax, which produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque.
As for transmission choice, the gasoline engine connects to the GM six-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel engine connects to the Allison-branded GM 10-speed automatic transmission.
The 2023 Chevy Silverado HD towing capacities depend on a variety of factors, including drivetrain configuration, engine, model and the type of hitch used, where the gooseneck hitch and diesel engine generally offer higher towing capacities.
To begin, let’s check out the Silverado 2500 HD towing capacities with a standard ball hitch. In this configuration, the highest towing capacity is 18,500 pounds, offered by Crew Cab models with the L5P diesel engine.

As a reminder, the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD rides on a more-capable version of the GM T1 platform. Meanwhile, production began earlier this year at the GM Flint plant in Michigan and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
