The GM Authority Take

GMC Canyon sales have been hampered by limited inventory as a result of idled production throughout 2021, itself caused by a shortage of supplies, including the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. In fact, Canyon production was idled in December 2021, this time due to renovations at the GM Wentzville plant in preparation for building the next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon and 2023 Chevy Colorado. Production was again down in January 2022, finally resuming at the end of that month.

In spite of that, Canyon sales have been on the upswing, and combined sales of the Canyon and Colorado give The General a second-place position in the midsize pickup truck segment.

In August GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the third generation of the midsize pickup. Highlights of the all-new model include the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X as the range-topping go-anywhere off-roader, along with revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies. The new truck is available in four trim levels: the mass-market Elevation, AT4 off-roader, Denali luxury cruiser, and the aforementioned AT4X, which offers an exclusive Edition 1 package. All trims feature a factory two-inch suspension lift, enabling ground clearance of up to 9.6 inches, as well as a dedicated off-road performance display page in the infotainment system.

The 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X features an extra one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff. Inside, the Canyon AT4X includes an Obsidian Rush colorway with Ceramic White accents. The Edition 1 package mentioned earlier aims to make the new off-road-ready AT4X trim level even more appealing with a variety of exclusive off-road parts and components, including underbody cameras, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a winch, 17-inch beadlock capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, a performance front skid plate, and Edition 1 badging. Beyond that, a 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is on its way, and will include a number of important upgrades over the standard, new 2023 Canyon AT4X.

Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High Output tune rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings.

Outside, the 2023 Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, improving the pickup’s approach, departure, and breakover angles since all models in the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim are equipped as standard with an off-road suspension package featuring an ultra-wide track and a two-inch factory lift. That results in an impressive standard ground clearance of 9.6 inches. The 2023 Canyon Elevation is available with either 2WD or 4WD, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels are equipped with 4WD as standard. The front air dam was removed across all trims, while LED exterior lighting complements the new exterior design.

The 2023 Canyon AT4 expands on the off-road performance with 17-inch off-road wheels and tires, a faux front skid plate, red-painted tow hooks, gloss black exterior trim, and red-accented AT4 exterior and interior badging. The 2023 Canyon AT4X, meanwhile, features an additional one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff.

Inside, we find an overhauled cabin featuring soft-touch materials and stitching all around. The all-new interior comes with a new standard eight-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trims, and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster for Denali and AT4X trim. An 11.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus Google Built-in (Google Automotive Services), an available head-up display, and wireless phone charger.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali

The GMC Canyon Denali stands out from the Elevation, AT4 and AT4X trim levels with heaps of chrome exterior trim, which adorns the faux front skid plate, grille and mirror caps and frames the exterior GMC logos. The Denali trim level also features as standard chrome running boards, LED headlights, taillights, daytime running lights and fog lamps, as well as a wide stance and two-inch factory suspension lift.

The cabin of the range-topping Denali is the most important aspect of this luxury-focused truck. The well-equipped interior includes a 6.2-inch diagonal head-up display, 11-inch diagonal driver’s display, and an 11.3-inch infotainment display, along with laser-etched open-pore wood trim, a heated steering wheel, a seven-speaker Bose stereo, Jet Black leather upholstery with Teak accents, heated and ventilated power front seats, and a drive mode selector with four available modes.

2023 GMC Canyon Denali

The 2023 GMC Canyon is scheduled to enter production on January 25th, 2023, with the new AT4X trim set to roll off the line in the spring of 2023. Pricing is set to start at around $40K.

Production of the 2022 Canyon was originally slated to end in October of this year, with orders for the 2022 model year halted in July. Now, however, sources familiar with the matter indicate that production of the 2022 Canyon has been extended by two months. As such, the final production date will be December 23rd, with the last order window set for the week of October 20th.

2023 GMC Canyon AT4X

As we wait for the next-generation Canyon to enter production next month, sales of the current model are continuing to improve and will undoubtedly take off when the all-new model arrives. That, however, will only be the case if GM can build enough of the next-generation Canyon and Colorado without any hiccups. These models could finally help The General put pressure on Toyota for midsize pickup truck dominance. Get ready for the adventure to unfold.
