As GM Authority was the first to report in October, GM is poised to offer a new, even-more-capable variant of the third-generation GMC Canyon AT4X dubbed the AT4X AEV Edition, set to equip further trail-ready upgrades sourced from American Expedition Vehicles. Now, the upcoming GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition has once again been spotted testing as a prototype out on public roads.
The last time we saw the GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition was a few months ago, with the previous prototype showing off its red body panels completely free of any camouflage. By contrast, this new prototype appears to be hiding behind some heavy vinyl and a mottled black-and-white wrap. Nevertheless, there’s still a few interesting things worth pointing out here.
For example, the state of the camouflage seems to suggest this prototype was out undergoing some rigorous off-road testing. Check out the vinyl around the lower edge of the front end and rear – both bits appear to be pretty heavily chewed up, like they’ve seen a big rock or two out on the trail. This coincides with the state of the red prototype spotted last October, which also had a few choice dents and scapes along the body, suggesting it too was roughing it as intended.
Speaking of the color, this particular GMC GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition appears to be covered Dynamic Blue Metallic (paint code GLT), as indicated by the strips of blue seen around the mottled black-and-white covers.
In back, the standard Multimatic DSSV shocks are more than obvious, showing off their characteristic gold finish. A 3-inch lift gives this rig the right stance. The off-roader will also be equipped with 33-inch tires, front and rear e-lockers, extensive underbody protection, and a Baja drive mode. The Edition 1 package will add in goodies like underbody cameras, a new off-road bumper and safari bar, a winch, and more.
As for the power spec, the GMC Canyon AT4X is propelled by the turbocharged 2.7 I4 L3B gasoline engine in the range-topping High-Output tune, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Under the skin is the updated GMT 31XX-2 platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

I’ve waited 3 years for this new truck. Chevrolet pushed out the Colorado configuration yesterday, pricing isn’t spot on. GMC Canyon, dealers have had pricing for weeks, to but no details of components…. Don’t all of these people sit across the isle from each other in a building in Detroit somewhere?? Oops, forgot.. everyone works from home and this is a result of that…
What’s with the camo and body covering? I thought they already release press images of the truck. Are they hiding something?
Odds are slight changes are in store for the EV model. The nose and other aero may be employed.
GM needs to trim away the roughed-up corners, and while they’re at it, up the game by fitting 35’s on the corners. That’d be BAD-A$$!
When are they gonna come out with the new canyon all electric? I am fed up of paying gas.
