GM has issued a service bulletin for a reflashing of the Engine Control Module (ECM) for certain models of the 2020-2023 Buick Encore GX.
The problem: affected units may be unable clear the status of the DTC P0521 (Engine Oil Pressure Sensor Performance) trouble code. If the ECM previously set this trouble code, the affected vehicle may be unable to pass Emission Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
The fix: owners of affected vehicles are to bring their vehicles to the dealership to have a certified GM technician inspect the code and reprogram the ECM as necessary.
Affected components: engine control module (ECM).
Affected vehicles:
- 2020 to 2023 Buick Encore GX
- 2021 to 2023 Chevy Trailblazer
Number of affected vehicles: it’s unclear at this time how many vehicles are affected by this issue.
Owners should: bring their vehicles into the dealership to have the ECM reflashed.

As a reminder, the current generation of the Buick Encore GX is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Optional is the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, which produces 155 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 174 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. Transmission options include either the continuously variable automatic transmission in conjunction with the standard front-wheel drivetrain, or the GM nine-speed automatic when the optional all-wheel drivetrain is specified.
As for structure, the Buick Encore GX rides on GM’s modular GM VSS-F (Vehicle Strategy Set-Front) platform, while production began at the GM Bupyeong plant in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, South Korea on April 24th, 2022.

Guys … we are entering a new year the 2023, and finishing 2022. Today, the 22 December 2022 received my second negative response from GM UK and USA, not able as being Creative Designer neither in England neither in California. Of course here near Wedel Germany Blankenese we are well at home and all would be too far. As GM Consider doing the Best Products, it is not I think, because has the Design Styling Errors, but as they consider the best and also whatever I write here appreciating or not, receive only dislikes at most. So My Resolution since now is not to write any comment in GM Authority anymore, so GM will be Happy, GM Authority is happy and all you guys are happy. Of course will continue seeing the new models in a daily base but wish you all good luck in your future. Of course my time as GMB employee in 1995 to 1998 was a good time, in which consider GM a great company yet, even in all those decades GM transformed itself in another thing, in which I do not fit anymore. Have you all a great day. Thanks for the opportunity in writing my Goodbye
Really like this model, and GMC Terrain. But,,,,, underpowered and poor fuel economy at such a high price for decent ammenities dove us away. GM refuses to add hybrid option since they have tunnel vision on EV’s, so we bought a 2023 Kia Sorrento hybrid in Dec. Love it. Came with all the parts and delivers strong performance and fuel economy, with a load of amenities and impressive warranty package. Would’ve like another GM in our driveway, but GM has lost us for a customer.
GM tried hybrids and they simply didn’t sell in the numbers that GM was hoping for. They made a decision 4 years ago to stop developing hybrids and jump all in to EVs. Meanwhile, Toyota continues to have great success with hybrids and has even publicly cautioned on the jump to full EV. I firmly believe that hybrids and plug-in hybrids are the sweet spot right now for electrification and efficiency. GM, Ford, and the Europeans are just pushing too quickly with the full EV market and the world is just not ready for it. The infrastructure to adequately support EVs is not keeping pace with the number of EVs being brought to market. When fast charging is as available as gasoline, and EVs can go 400-500 miles on a charge, with recharging taking only 20 minutes, and range unaffected by outside temperature, then EVs will be a viable option.
Buick these days is nothing but a rebadged, overpriced Chevrolet. At least Pontiac inherently had upgraded suspensions.
Hybrid is certainly a better choice than full EV and relying on these undersized and overstressed 3-4 cylinder engines that result in efficiency no better than a standard V8.
I have 14k on my 22 Encore Gx, and have had a problem with seeking brakes coming from the front, in reverse.. now is squeeking at time going forward. I was told by the dealership ” they all squeek” this is getting worse, louder.. I brought this to the attention of the dealership when I got my oil change. They checked my brakes, said there’s nothing wrong with them. Of course there isn’t, but they squeek, loud.
What can I do to fix this problem
They all do that, when something is wrong. My Sonic, a related vehicle, at 78,000 miles, has never. Don’t back down. Try another GM dealer, perhaps one with a GMC/Cadillac sign. Patrons there routinely expect better.
We got a 2014 buck encore from New nothing but troubles. Turbo and throttle body had to b replaced with 162 000 on it, now Cadillac converter and o2 sensor , one thing after another. Never again with this product. Sorry 😞
162,000 miles and you had to replace the turbo & throttle body, catalytic convertor & 02 sensor? I think that going 162,000 miles and having to replace those parts sounds like your 2014 Encore has given you very good service.
I wonder if it is the brake pad material. I sometimes have squeaking with the rear brakes on my 2007 ION due to the brake pad material. It still has the original rear brakes but then again it has about 89,000 miles! With only 14,000 miles on your Encore GX I would push to replace the brake pads. Your dealer should co-operate after all GM will cover it. You’re the customer so push back go right up to the zone office if you have to. I would also research another dealer. It sounds to me that they are handing you an excuse to try & quiet you down.
It is the pads and rotors, I’m hoping when I take it in, I will get them tonrepace them under warranty, bumper to bumper warranty. I can’t do it til Feb b3cause I need a loaner car.
