GM full-size pickup truck sales decreased five percent to 167,778 units in the United States during the third quarter of 2022, with both of The General’s trucks powered by internal combustion engines in the red. Chevy Silverado sales fell five percent to 117,198 units, while the GMC Sierra also fell five percent to 50,169 units. As has historically been the case, GM continues to sell over twice as many Silverados as Sierras.
Meanwhile, the first-ever all-electric GMC Hummer EV pickup is a brand new entry with no historical sales data. It moved 411 units during the quarter.

Poor sales performance of GM’s two bread-and-butter pickup truck nameplates, Silverado and Sierra, means The General fell short of outselling the Ford F-Series by less than 200 units, even when counting the Hummer EV Pickup’s 411 deliveries. Even so, GM’s entries handily outsold the Ram Pickup by nearly 50K units.

Note that the table above includes sales of the first-ever all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup in the F-150 line item. Joining the mix this time around is the Rivian R1T as a new all-electric pickup. As we reported earlier this week, the Hummer EV Pickup was outsold by the R1T 10-to-1. The R1T went on sale a full six months or so before the Hummer EV Pickup.
In any event, combining Chevy Silverado sales with GMC Sierra sales makes GM the second best-selling maker of full-size pickups in the United States, with a combined 167,778 units for a 34 percent segment share. The Ford F-Series held a similar 34 percent share with a slightly higher 167,962 units, while the Ram Pickup held a 24 percent share with 118,106 units.
In fact, sales were down for all full-size pickup trucks during the quarter except for the Toyota Tundra, which posted a 43 percent bump to 30,203 units. That was still 20K less than even the Sierra.
Looking Ahead
While sales of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra were down year-over-year, this was mostly the result of availability issues rather than competitive pressures.
The refreshed light duty Silverado and Sierra both introduced their most capable off-road variants ever for the 2023 model year, with respective special editions from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). Meanwhile, the refreshed heavy duty Silverado and Sierra models debuted during the fall of 2022. All of these models have been highly anticipated, with the refreshed models featuring an updated exterior design and an overhauled cabin while adding variants and new technology.

By mid-2023, GM will have launched updates to its entire pickup truck line, including full-size trucks and mid-size trucks with the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado and next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon models, making a bid to dominate all truck markets in which it competes. In addition, The General is is taking on all comers with upcoming electric trucks to join the Hummer EV Pickup, having debuted the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV and first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali in 2022.
