While the all-new 2023 Chevy Montana will be General Motors’ biggest launch next year in Brazil and has just been confirmed for the Mexican market, the automaker is also considering Chevrolet‘s new compact pickup for markets outside of Latin America.
During an interview with Motor1 Argentina, GM South America Product Marketing Director, Rodrigo Fioco, confirmed the arrival of the new 2023 Chevy Montana in the main Latin American countries, while making it clear that the company will not limit the vehicle’s reach to that region. On the contrary, the representative of GM’s South American subsidiary projects an international expansion of the new Montana and left all possibilities open.
“We are studying and analyzing possibilities, and there is increasing interest from other regions of the world,” Fioco said. “We have an interesting history on the African continent, and we already have a presence in the Middle East, where there is a significant demand for pickups. Things happen. We developed the Chevrolet Colorado Double Cab in Brazil and it ended up being sold in the United States. Everything is possible,” he added.
In addition to alluding to the previous-generation Chevy Montana/Utility in Africa and the Middle East, the head of product marketing for GM South America directly mentioned the case of the international Chevy Colorado/S10 developed in Brazil, which years after its debut world ended up coming to the United States with comprehensive improvements. Thus, he hinted that the new Montana could even be sold in the American market if necessary.
GM revealed that the all-new Chevy Montana is a project developed in partnership between the technology centers of South America, North America and Asia, making the new compact pickup a more international and strategic product than the previously launched GM models based on the GEM platform – which were created in Brazil and China. In fact, this is the first time that the North American subsidiary participates directly in the development of a vehicle with this architecture.
Although we do not yet know about concrete plans for an eventual expansion of the new Chevy Montana outside of Latin America, this shows that GM not only has the necessary technical and logistical capacity, but also the intention to do so. It’s worth noting that the third-generation Montana was first caught in South Korea, where local media speculated the pickup could be introduced to that country and other developed markets.
If that were really the case, the all-new Chevy Montana might need a new manufacturing facility and a more powerful powertrain. GM could use the latest-generation Ecotec 1.5L four-cylinder engine already available in both its Chevy Tracker RS platform partner and the all-new Seeker/Trax in China, rated at 181 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

Think about a little close the rear with an upper cover, with necessary adjustments and quite look a Sedan would prefer instead. This Version here in Europe would be considered. In 1995 we took the Opel Corsa and made a Sedan from it, Now opposite take this Pickup and make a sedan from it, As being unibody mono block, very easy to make
The BRICK countries in the last 10 years have made incredible economic strides and are becoming increasingly western in their culture and tastes. Most vehicles sold in these countries use the same safety parts, emission parts (even if the requirements are less stringent) and generally interchangeable parts on most their mid to upper level models. This truck is probably just a fatter bumper and American emissions certified motor to being sold here. Might not test as well in side crash tests as say the maverick or Santa Cruz, or a specific designed NA/Euro market vehicle, but is not far behind.
Likely it will come over here in 2024/5 with a revised fascia, cause it seams GM does a new grill every 2 years 🤨
Put the 1.6 L diesel in it from the Equinox and crush them Maverick Hybrid fuel economy.
Chevy has offered light Diesels and few people buy them and the cost to develop them is vastly expensive. They want to sell them but nobody cares in great enough numbers.
Recall how if you give me a Equinox Diesel we will buy. They offered and no one bought them.
Odds are GM is waiting to see if sales improve in this segment. Ford, Honda and Hyundai have sold less than 90,000 units combined. Not a good number compared to what mid size trucks sell,
The Honda, although unibody, competes with the midsize trucks in size and price while looking like a minivan.
The Hyundai has too high of a base price while not being as practical as other options.
The Maverick, however, hit the bullseye. Every one they build is either pre-sold or marked up by dealerships due to lack of supply. The most trade-in vehicle for one is a Honda Civic. I don’t think GM needs any more proof that it’s an untapped market, they just have to provide the right product.
If the Maverick is such a success, both in quantity of units sold and profitability per unit, why is Ford limiting production so extensively?
chips and supply shortages.
They would rather put the chips in full size trucks and SUVs that sell for $60 to $100k
The larger vehicles are cash cows , not much profit in a $25k Maverick that is why they are limited,
Same as GM, go find a Trailblazer, Equinox / Buick/ GMC equevelant , there are very few on the lots if any as GM diverted all of the chips to larger more profitable vehicles.
This will not correct easily , the manufactures love it as its driving up used car prices and they have no trouble selling the full size stuff
OK then, why hasn’t GM even decided if they will build the High Country I ordered? A$72K truck, and I haven’t heard back from them yet.
By the time you load up the Cruze and Maverick they both reach Honda pricing. They also share similar FWD Unit body construction.
The Maverick is limited due to parts and quality issues. Ford has only moved 51,802 models by the 3rd quarter of this year. Do not believe the sold out hype as these numbers are not great. They should be moving well over 100,000 units a year and Ford may make 65,000 if they are lucky.
Yes many are sold but for as few as they have built they should be. We lament Camaro sales being poor and they have been in the same area.
This is a cheap small vehicle and it needs volume to make money. The Cheaper the model the more volume needed to make money. I know it is based on a Cheap Escape but that is still not enough.
Ford has major issues Their production is a mess. Lack of parts and quality issues are now front and center as they have been a mess.
Ford just to fund their true EV program not the Lighting and Mach E that were false flags of a real EV program Had to lay off 8,000 people to pay for it,.
The out standing debts for the loan in the early 2000 are coming due as is the 7 billion for the Energy department loan. Yes they took government money too but they never repaid it all.
Stock prices are in the tank for Ford too. They need the Maverick and Bronco to sell in large numbers but they are still not moving them.
GM on the other hand can wait and watch to see if this segment grows. As of now there is not much room for three MFGS without growth but Toyota and Ram may enter and if they do and they split the segment and not grow it they will make little money.
Ran has delayed their model several times and may again.
As for Hybrids they sold 4800 of them in the third quarter out of 13,000 units sold. Not much money there.
Use real numbers not headlines to really judge this as it tells a different story.
GM is locked and loaded if the money is there so will see it if they can make money. If not they will leave this in the third worlds countries.
The Santa Fe & Maverick have both had many early problems. They were rushed to market. The Honda is way overpriced. This would be a good alternative and is much better looking than either of the others I mentioned. I also believe it would be a lower cost alternative to the new Colorado that now starts at nearly $40K.
You can price a well optioned Colorado LT in the low to mid $30K range. The Z71 and ZR2 are over $40 as are the GMC models but they come fully loaded with few options.
The LT can be had in 2 and 4 wheel drive at a nice price and a lot more truck than a Maverick.
I want the Tony Montana edition. “Say hello to my little friend!”
Well….. While GM is contemplating selling the Montana in the U.S. Hyundai is walking away with the sales prize for their Santa Cruz. Most of the year it’s been #1 in monthly sales. Have several neighbors who own them and have great things to share about the car/truck. If GM doesn’t wait too long, and uses a more powerful engine over the 1500cc, they could capture this market. I’ve been eyeballing the Santa Cruz because it fits in the garage, reasonably priced, very utilitarian, can handle gravel roads, 2.5L engine with turbo option, and can tow a reasonable large load. Sold!
At a recent Orlando International Auto Show, I tried to get into a Santa Cruz PU truck. Nice vehicle all around but you need to be well under 6′ tall to get into one. Picture wise they make them look like full size trucks but they are really small. Yes, Chevy needs a small truck to keep the customers visiting gm dealerships across all income levels. These small truck buyers will eventually able to bump up to full size trucks.
Be a nice little run around rig when you really don’t need your full size truck. Looks good to.
