Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Trax sales during the third quarter of 2022 placed the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover in 15th place among 20 entries. The Jeep Compass moved up to first place with a 14 percent sales decline to 20,631 units. The Honda HR-V dropped to second place with a 47 percent slide to 19,539 units, while the VW Taos moved up two spots to take third place with a 44 percent bump to 18,880 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin, remained in fourth place with a 32 percent drop to 17,388 units. The Trax placed 15th with a one percent bump to 6,329 units. While a seemingly negligible increase, the Trax joins only three other models to post positive sales gains this quarter. More impressive is that GM was set to retire the Trax this year, but the model will continue thanks to an all-new model set for 2024. More on that, just below.
Much like Chevrolet, GM’s Buick brand also fields two entries in this space. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a 40 percent drop to 9,825 units, while the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), the Trax’s platform mate, placed 17th with a 13 percent slide to 3,487 units.

The Compass led with a 10 percent share, up on percentage point, while the HR-V posted a nine percent share, down five percentage points. The Taos held a nine percent share as well, but was up four percentage points. Other GM models in the segment fared as follows: The Trailblazer posted an eight percent share, down two percentage points; the Encore GX held a five percent share, down one percentage point; and the Encore maintained a mere two percent share.
The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Encore and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 37,029 deliveries. That was good for an 18 percent segment share, placing The General in second place in the segment from an overall volume standpoint.

Toyota’s newest model, the Corolla Cross, joined the mainstream B-crossover segment earlier this year to most likely replace the C-HR, which has performed poorly from a sales volume standpoint. During the second quarter, Toyota saw a combined 16,439 sales of the C-HR and Corolla Cross, for a seven percent segment share.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 33,308 deliveries for a combined 16 percent segment share, placing the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate to second place behind GM at first under this scenario.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 20 percent to 207,528 units during Q3 2022, meaning Trax sales underperformed the segment average year-over-year.
On a related note, the automakers listed above with multiple models all posted similar cumulative sales numbers last quarter, maintaining the same ranking and same, or nearly the same, segment share percentage, respectively. The segment overall, though, was down about 16.5K deliveries quarter-over-quarter. Also, while the Trax posted only a three percent segment share, the top-spot Compass held a share of just 10 percent. This all exemplifies how competitive and crowded this segment has become.
The GM Authority Take
Chevy Trax sales matched its performance year-over-year, which makes sense given the fact that GM has been prioritizing production of larger and more profitable vehicles. The limited amount of supplies allocated to more affordable GM vehicles were prioritized to the Chevy Trailblazer at the expense of the Trax.
Back in March, GM Authority exclusively reported that GM was planning to drop the Chevy Trax from its lineup after the 2022 model year. That took place this past November as the last first-gen Trax rolled off the line in South Korea. In October, GM finally debuted the next-generation 2024 Trax as Chevy’s new entry-level crossover, and also introduced a video about the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax.
GM President Mark Reuss has some very high praise for the 2024 Chevy Trax, calling it one of the “finest entry-level” Chevys in many years.
“This is something we’re getting to launch here, obviously, and this about a $19,000 price point that is profitable. This is probably in my career, and maybe beyond that, the finest entry-level Chevrolet that this company, and I think the market, has seen in many years,” Reuss said about the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax at the recent GM Investor Day event.
Outside, the 2024 Chevy Trax boasts new exterior dimensions that are longer, lower, and wider than the preceding model. Up front, the new Trax incorporates the Bow Tie brand’s latest ICE-based design language, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover. Up front is a dual-layer headlight treatment, consisting of a set of thin Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) followed by the actual headlights lower on in the front fascia.
Five trim levels will be on offer – LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ. Each include their own unique styling bits, from wheels to grille treatments.
Inside, the new 2024 Trax is roomier than the preceding model as a direct result of the aforementioned size increase. The new Trax also offers more safety features and tech, including six advanced safety and driver awareness technologies via Chevy Safety Assist, and a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen on LS and 1RS models; meanwhile, LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Further onboard tech features include Active Noise Cancelation and cruise control; Adaptive Cruise Control is offered on most trims.
As for the power spec, the 2024 Trax is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, the same powerplant found in the Chevy Trailblazer LS and LT trim levels. Output is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. In the Trax, the boosted three-pot is paired to the GM six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is the only drivetrain option available; by comparison, the outgoing model offered an all-wheel-drive option.
Pricing for the 2024 Chevy Trax starts at $21,495 for the base LS trim, rising as high as $24,995 for the 2RS and Activ trim levels, destination freight charge included. The starting price of the 2024 model is lower than that of the 2022 Chevy Trax.
On a related note, during the debut of the new 2024 Chevy Trax, GM explained the reason it’s offering two entries in the small crossover segment, while underlining how the Trax and Trailblazer appeal to different customers and can successfully coexist in the same brand lineup.
Specifically, GM says that the 2024 Chevy Trax appeals to customers that want the practicality of a sedan, plus the versatility of a utility, but with “lower, leaner proportions.” The Trax also serves as a gateway to the Chevy brand, according to GM execs. By contrast, the Trailblazer’s three-inch taller height and all-wheel drive capability give it more of a light off-road demeanor, especially when specced in the Activ trim level.
All signs point to the all-new Chevy Trax boosting sales of the Bow Tie brand’s smallest offering to potentially previous levels. The Trax was first introduced in the U.S. for the 2015 model year and had its best sales year in 2019 at 116,816 deliveries and its best showing in Q3 of that year with 37,407 deliveries, just three years ago (see running Chevy Trax sales). But today’s Trax competes against 19 other entries, three of those being corporate cousins. Additionally, the segment’s best-selling entry moved just over 20K units this quarter.
Nevertheless, the 2024 Chevy Trax is clearly a night-and-day upgrade over the outgoing model, which has sold decently, even as a dated model that was long overdue for an overhaul.

I’d like to meet that one person in all of Colombia who purchased a Trax in the 3rd quarter of this year.
