GM unveiled the 2024 Chevy Trax this past October, introducing an all-new second generation for the entry-level crossover. Now, GM Authority has learned that the 2024 Chevy Trax will adopt a port consensus model with regard to dealer inventory allocation.
For those readers who may be unaware, the method by which GM allocates dealer inventory can vary. The port consensus model, for example, involves GM building the vehicles which it thinks are needed within the current confines or constraints, with GM selecting the trim levels and configurations to be built before the vehicles are shipped to port. Once the vehicles arrive at port, dealers can then pick and choose from the available vehicles for their respective inventory.
The port consensus model differs from the regular consensus model, where dealers can place a request specifying which vehicles it wants from the factory, including things like trim levels and configurations. The requests are done at regular intervals (or order cycles, also known as DOSP) and include recommendations from GM based on market conditions, both locally and nationally, with the dealer making changes to the ultimate selection. GM can then fulfill the request or modify it as needed, with the requested vehicles produced and delivered once a consensus was reached.
However, with regard to the 2024 Chevy Trax, dealers will adopt a port consensus model instead. To note, several other GM crossovers are also under a port consensus model as well, including the 2023 Buick Envision and 2023 Chevy Trailblazer. The 2022 Chevy Trax was under a port consensus model.
Per previous GM Authority coverage, the start of regular production (SORP) for the 2024 Chevy Trax is set to kick off in February of the 2023 calendar year. Dealers will begin taking orders this month.
With regard to the specs, the 2024 Chevy Trax features the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, while under the skin, the crossover rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set. Production will take place in South Korea.

Stupid. I’ve been waiting for a specific vehicle for almost 2 years now. Customers should be able to get what they want. This makes me and I’m sure others want to leave the Chevy/GM family…makes this feel less like family when you habe to hunt, wait forever and most likely never get what you want. Seems like Chevy wants people to just settle. Not a way to run a business.
It’s a perfect way to run a business. Less than 5% of consumer sales are ordered. Meanwhile, GM saves far more than 5% making them in South Korea or China. Especially on these econo-cars with barely any options.
The people who do order a vehicle are largely fleets and work trucks which do have a ton of options. That’s why the Japanese struggle to get into that market.
If you’ve been waiting for two years then that combination is simply not being produced. The chip shortage has resulted in some of that.
We had a fleet order for 34 trucks that GM finally called and said…”would you take THESE 34 trucks instead…”
About a month later the same thing happened with our Ford fleet order.
There is no “pick and choose” on the dealers part. GM builds the way they want and then assigns them to dealers who have no input on trim level or color. The only choice a dealer has is to either take what is assigned or pass it up. It is terrible for customer satisfaction as there is no custom ordering and the buyer is left to the mercy of the system hoping that eventually the dealer will be assigned something close to what they want.
So you will be no longer be able to order what you want? Sounds like settle for what we have..
Done well, under normal manufacturing and shipping conditions, the consumer would rarely have to wait for a vehicle.mazda, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia all operate in this manner.
With fewer and fewer options, it pretty much comes down to trim level, color and an option package usually. This is part of the reason that a la carte options are becoming a thing of the past.
