A few days ago, GM Authority brought you the very first look at a 2023 Chevy Colorado Trail Boss painted in the striking Nitro Yellow Metallic exterior paint. This time, we captured another Trail Boss model, this time painted in Sterling Gray Metallic.
Since this particular example is finished in the Trail Boss trim level, the midsize pickup truck is positioned as a basic off-roader, with a few all-terrain goodies but without the higher end equipment of the Z71 or the high-level equipment and capabilities of the ZR2.
On the outgoing, second-generation Chevy Colorado, the Trail Boss was offered as a package upgrade for LT and Z71 trim levels. Now, the Colorado Trail Boss is now its own trim level on the third-generation trucks.

At the front of this particular 2023 Colorado Trail Boss, we see Black Bow Tie badging and a Gloss Black Sport Grille with a Molded in Color (MIC) Black Surround and Fascia treatment. This black theme can also be seen on the door handles, belt line moldings, and mirror caps. A Trail Boss sticker is present on the rear of the bedside.
Out back, we see CHEVROLET debossed into the tailgate, while a single rear exhaust pipe exits just behind the passenger-side rear tire.
As for rollers, this ensemble rides on 18-inch High Gloss Black aluminum wheels (RPO code PZX). Standard on the Trail Boss trim, these wheels are one of 10 available wheel designs available across the next-gen Chevy Colorado lineup.
This 2023 Colorado is dressed in Sterling Grey Metallic paint (color code GXD), an extra-charge color that’s available with all three Colorado interior colorways:
- Jet Black
- Jet Black / Adrenaline Red
- Jet Black / Artemis
It’s worth noting that while Sterling Grey Metallic is available on all trim levels, the Trail Boss trim is available only with Jet Black Cloth seats or Jet Black with Evotex seat trim.
The 2023 Colorado is offered in a total of eight exterior hues (relevant paint code listed in parentheses):
- Harvest Bronze Metallic (GXN)
- Sterling Gray Metallic (GXD)
- Sand Dune Metallic (GTL)
- Radiant Red Tintcoat (GNT)
- Glacier Blue Metallic (GLT)
- Nitro Yellow Metallic (GCP)
- Black (GBA)
- Summit White (GAZ)
Black and Summit White are the only paint colors available for no extra charge. All other colors, including Sterling Grey Metallic, are extra-cost options.
Under the hood, the Trail Boss trim features the mid-range 2.7L Turbo Plus tune, where the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine produces 310 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. As far as transmission options go, all 2023 Colorados utilize an updated version of GM’s eight-speed automatic transmission, while 4WD, a two-speed auto transfer case, a transfer case shield, and limited slip differential are standard.
As for structure, the 2023 Colorado rides on an updated version of the GMT 31XX platform, which underpins the second-generation Colorado. For the 2023 and newer model, the architecture is known internally as GMT 31XX-2. Production of the all-new model will kick off at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri early next year.

GM should be ashamed for how much it costs to get adaptive cruise on this truck- that already has all the required hardware.
Can’t wait for the day when we see the end of the mega cab craze. This is an SUV.
cool halogen headlights on a 40K dollar truck #fail
The color looks very washed out here on this Colorado, like a drab silver. If you click on “You may also like” 2023 Silverado, it gives you a much better look at the true color of Sterling Grey Metallic, a much prettier color, and the color I chose for my 2023 Silverado High Country.
Yeah it’s all lighting and camera plus a cloudy day. This color is nicer than it appears in these photos. Most people with gravitate to this color because it’s safe. However it’s still a pretty boring silver grey with an up charge.
Ugly truck for being so expensive. And, as always, the vast majority of these “trail bosses” will never get their tires dirty- except for maybe being the first back out on the state highway after it snows a couple of inches. But, the image is far more important than the upcharge or loss in mpg.
Ridiculous LED aren’t even an option on trailboss. Guess guys will have to give money to aftermarket instead of in GMs pocket.
It’d be interesting to see what rapid blue looks like on it.
Also, can’t get heated seats or steering wheel on the Trail Boss! Does GM think every Trail Boss buyer is going to live next to a beach or desert?
agreed. heated stuff should be part of a convenience package and led/ fog lights should be standard on the higher trims. I guess guys that buy the everyday off-road trim (trailboss) don’t need to see as well??? I live in the smokies and good lighting is a must have. missing fog lights for this package is just weird. hope its winch friendly under that bumper cover
I think GM is making a big mistake by having the Trail Boss as a separate trim level as opposed to a package that you can get on the WT, LT, and Z71. I think they will find there will be a lot of people that want the off-road look without the $50k+ price tag!
