Redesigned 2023 Honda Accord Revealed As Chevy Malibu Rival

Honda has revealed the redesigned 2023 Honda Accord mid-size sedan, which will continue to serve as a rival to the Chevy Malibu.

This all-new, 11th-generation Accord is longer and sleeker than the prior generation, with larger proportions and a wider stance. These exterior updates and changes reflect Honda’s new design direction with a low horizontal beltline and broader front end.

The new mid-size family commuter will be available in six trim levels, starting with the turbocharged LX and EX and topped by the hybrid-powered Sport, EX-L, Sport-L and Touring. Honda is putting much emphasis on the hybrid versions of this model, stating that the gas-electric powertrain’s take rate will be higher than before. In fact, Honda expects most the hybrid versions to account for 50 percent of total Accord sales.

As far as power goes, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 engine from the previous generation remains, producing 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid powertrain gets a bump in torque, with 204 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 in uplevel Accord trim levels, which developed 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, has been dropped.

“The all-new 11th-generation Accord is essential to our lineup as a critical driver of brand loyalty, and with hybrid models representing 50 percent of sales, a key part of Honda’s electrification strategy.” said Mamadou Diallo, vice president of Auto Sales, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “This is our best Accord ever, a true benchmark in its class, offering an unbeatable combination of style, efficiency, performance and connectivity.”

The 2023 Chevy Malibu is GM’s answer to this competitor. It’s important to note that while Honda is hedging its bets on the hybrid powertrain to be successful, the Chevy Malibu hybrid has been discontinued since the 2020 model year.

As a reminder, the 2023 Chevy Malibu features the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, delivering 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic (CVT) is the only transmission offered.

Under the skin, the Malibu rides on the GM E2 platform, while production takes place at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City.

  1. Saw an article about this new Accord on Carscoops a little while ago. Nice looking and better looking than the outgoing Accord.

    Found it interesting that the Accord will be dropping the 2.0L with their 1.5L turbo as standard with the CVT. Sound familiar? The fact that Honda is offering a second powertrain option is where they are better than only one option on the Malibu. Although I really like the 1.5/CVT setup in my car, they should have an optional engine and it needs to be hybrid or plug-in hybrid to give the Malibu a more competitive side.

  2. Honda and GM should collaborate on an Ultium platform based sedan to replace the Accord/Malibu.

    1. The plan is that GM will share and build the SUV and Honda will provide a EV car for the GM platform and they may assemble it.

      It is really a tall hatch.

      Honda is building a battery plant in Ohio already.

        1. I back up C8.r, up to the point that it’s in discussion. I guarantee that little has been done on this physically. Honda buys the GM diesels for abroad. This is far from the first time Honda and GM dod business. Saturn bought Honda V6’s.

    Yes, its looks are kind of generic but far better than the monstrosities they’ve been putting on the roads until now.

    Honda’s engineering has always been a cut above. Now its design is starting to reach for the same goal.

  5. The only way I can see the Chevy Malibu standing out at all in the Midsize Sedan Market in the USA is if GM takes a huge bold move and makes a Brand new one that is a BEV using the Ultium Platform.

    1. Enough with the BEV garbage…make a proper ICE sedan that is somewhere between Mailbu and Impala-sized and has some true performance bits (not just an RS badge or red stripes in the wheels).

      1. GM can produce another ICE sedan but it will use a carryover engine from the current model cycles. Also the platform will be enhanced and not totally altered.

  6. Bought a new Accord in 1992. Gave it to son #1 with 185K trouble free miles in 2001.He took it to school and it was sold in 2007 with 255K miles. The newspaper ad ran 2 days and we had offers above asking price. Bought a new 2007 Accord that year and gave to son #2 with 155K trouble free miles in 2017 to replace his 2010 Camaro that had 90K miles.
    Sounds crazy to go from a 2010 V6 Camaro to an older car, but true. The Camaro , while a beautiful looking vehicle, had issues from the second year and he was fed up with it.
    He continues to drive that 07 Accord to this day with 230K miles.

  9. Wondering if HONDA ever resolved the Gasoline getting into the Oil issue on their 1.5 Turbo engine ? Grandson had one of the Civic SI cars with that engine and nothing but problems with it that HONDA either couldn’t or refused to fix. He finally had to ditch it at a sizeable loss before the gas washing down the cylinder walls wore the rings and cylinder bores out and had to change oil very, very frequently.. HONDA claimed it usually only affected the 1.5 T in the CR-V but that proved wrong, Three years later he took his fiancé to look for a used HONDA and every one they found, when you pulled the dipstick and smelled it, reeked of gasoline. HONDA usually builds quality, but they really dropped the ball on this one. Between that and those stupid, horrible CVT trannys they use you gotta’ watch both used and new models. Dropping the 2.0 4-cyl was very foolish and wait until owners/buyer discover the replacement costs on that hybrid’s battery pack…..YIKES !

  11. I know that I will see this on the road in the near future but it is safe to say that this design is forgettable at best with it’s very bland and generic looks inside and out. The current Malibu looks far better than the current and next generation model.

    But the mystery is why did Honda revealed this model so late this month? Very unusual.

  12. Seems like a step back as far as styling goes. And eliminating the 252 HP 2.0T is ridiculous just as it was in the Malibu. If you covered up the title of this article I could have sworn this was a VW. Yes Malaise era II is in full swing
