OnStar No Longer Available In Older GM Vehicles

GM subsidiary OnStar has recently announced that older GM vehicles will no longer be compatible with OnStar and Connected Services.
Effective through November and December, 2014 model-year and older GM vehicles, as well as select 2015 model-year vehicles, will lose access to OnStar. This affects current GM brands (Chevy, GMC, Buick, Cadillac), in addition to vehicles sold by discontinued brands (Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Saab, Hummer).
The reason for this suspension has to do with the service’s cellular network. These vehicles use Verizon’s 2G network, which will sunset in December 2022, as network providers focus on expanded coverage of and access to 4G and 5G networks.
For affected vehicle owners, OnStar Advisors will continue to provide 24/7 support. According to an OnStar spokesperson, members can still call 1.888.4ONSTAR or contact the company through the OnStar Guardian app.
OnStar members impacted by the 2G shutdown will see an automatic reduction in the cost of their monthly subscription to offset the loss of their in-car OnStar service. However, they will still be allowed to keep using the OnStar Guardian app and receive 24/7 access to OnStar Advisors by calling directly by phone.
This billing change will be effective around January 1st, 2023.
Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to contact OnStar with any questions, and to understand their options moving forward. Additionally, owners are suggested to download OnStar Guardian app, which allows them to carry OnStar services where they go with compatible devices. These services include Mobile Crash Response, Roadside Assistance, Emergency Services, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Location Services.
It’s worth noting that the OnStar Guardian app is already included in OnStar’s Safety & Security, Essentials and Premium plans.

I feel like they’re gonna lose a lot of business over this. If we make enough noise maybe we’ll b heard.
No you won’t. You are a peon. It doesn’t put anything in their Golden Parachutes.
Oh and you should find away to keep on star on your older vehicles! It’s a life saving option to have on all GM vehicles period! Thank you.
If they can’t even fix this technical problem with something as simple as OnStar, just imagine the fun will have with their new generation of all electric vehicles. Remember the Bolt is a Korean design not GM’s.
I have a 2012 Cadillac SRX and I keep my Caddy looking new and running like new it’s a beautiful suv but now with the OnStar services being depleted to almost nothing I don’t see the point in having the service at all and what’s left of it should be Free because what are you paying for?? Nothing
Ya I will not be upset I personally don’t care for the service on my 2022 gmc AT4 and my Camaro the unit is deactivated
Dropped Onstar in my 2012 Impala LT when they can no longer do the monthly reports due to the 2G shutdown.
“Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Location Services.” .. But the 2G modem will be dead. How could OnStar assist in either of those areas if my car is stolen? How would it report GPS coordinates?
Confusing or dare I say, deceptive.
I’ve tried to connect to the guardian program and was denied I have a older 2012 Chevy traverse
I can’t believe how many people are bellyaching about this. A vehicle, or anything made primarily out of metal, loses 50% of its tensile strength after five years. That means in the event of an accident, the vehicle doesn’t absorb energy but transfers it to your head and torso, resulting in serious injury or death. In other words, why would anyone who is concerned enough about safety and security to purchase Onstar drive an 8+ year old vehicle? Do you trust the airbags at that age? Why not just buy a new car?
Welcome to GMAuthority!
I wonder if FordAuthority is as bad?
That’s the price we pay for relying so heavily on technology. What you have today will be obsolete tomorrow.
And GM can’t do this? B.S.!
So initially OnStar was via Verizon. Now it’s ATT
Plus it went fr 2G to 3G and LTE is being replaced by 5G.
I had OnStar In my 2004 Silverados and 2007 Suburban
It;s not as simple as swapping a module from Analog (3G) to digital (4G) and now 5G
for those who have thumbs down the comment, let me ask you How often do you replace your mobile phone? When there was a switch from analog to digital (GSM/CDMA/TDMA) did you have to ghet a new phone, or was there a chip swap of some sort? Same question for 4G (GSM/LTE) and now 5G?
GM and Onstar can kiss my bottom in Macy’s window at Christmas time.
Someone above suggested buy a new car. Lol. Um OK, so I paid 30k for a new car. Barely has 100k on it, but I should go buy another new car, because this multi billion dollar company can’t make necessary upgrades. Lol. Um OK. 🙄
Who cares I never used it to start with as my cell phone does 95% of what On Star did. And my cell phone still works.
Apples and oranges.
I think we should all report General Motors to the better business bureau. Is this how customers should be treated? We’re the ones wjos made them who they are.
Like one of the other comments, my 2012 Chevy Equinox just turned over to 100,000 miles. I am a senior citizen and the features of ONStar was invaluable to me. Turn by turn navigation alone was something I used all the time. Checking my vehicle to see if there was a problem was something that I used all the time and the monthly report was wonderful. I was in an accident and OnStar sent information to the police that my car was in a crash. An ap on my phone is not going to be a replacement for the services that I had. It has been well worth the money to have these services. I am going to contact GM and Onstar concerning this matter. Hopefully if there is enough people complaning they just might offer a fix.
WHY DONT THEY HAVE AN UPGRADE FOR ON STAR THAT THEY STOPED? THE GOV SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS IT COST YOU IN THE PRICE WHEN YOU GOT YOUR NEW CAR.
