The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is the fifth model year of the latest fifth-generation light-duty pickup, debuting a number of important changes and updates compared to the fully refreshed 2022 model year. Among these changes is updated towing figures, and now, GM Authority is breaking down Sierra 1500 towing capacities.
Before we begin, let’s review the powertrain options. The 2023 GMC Sierra is offered with four different engine options. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It’s followed by the atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and the atmospheric 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, which delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All-new for the 2023 Sierra is the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax. Considered the “second iteration” of GM’s Duramax 3.0L straight-six, this diesel churns out 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
As for transmission options, the L3B is matched to the GM eight-speed automatic, while the L84, the L87 and the LZ0 are offered with the GM 10-speed automatic.
With that out of the way, here are the 2023 GMC Sierra towing capacities:

2. Sierra AT4 rated at 7,400 pounds / 3,357 kilograms. Sierra AT4X rated at 4,900 pounds / 2,223 kilograms.
3. Sierra AT4 rated at 7,000 pounds / 3,175 kilograms.
4. Sierra AT4 rated at 6,600 pounds / 2,994 kilograms.
Looking over the numbers, we see that the absolute maximum weight a 2023 Sierra can tow is 13,200 pounds with a ball hitch and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 engine. Meanwhile, the maximum tow weight with a 5th wheel/gooseneck hitch is 9,700 pounds, achieved with the 5.3L V8 L84. The Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT) is also necessary to reach these numbers.
When compared to the outgoing 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 towing capacities, we see that ball hitch capacities have gone up on some configurations, with the AT4 up considerably. However, the AT4X towing capacity has actually dropped. For 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches, it’s much of the same, as almost every single configuration has in increase in capacity. Unfortunately, the AT4X towing capacity fell even more with 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches.
As a reminder, production of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico. The Sierra rides in the GM T1 platform, which it shares with its corporate platform-mate, the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500.

I think the way you showed the towing capability sucked,I didn’t see anything that showed the 5,3 or 6.2,if it did you got some kind of code, maybe you think everyone is as smart as you think you are, just saying
There’s a column heading in the charts labelled “5.3L V8 L84”, and one labelled “6.2L V8 L87”, what more do you want?
some people like to complain about their own ignorance. This is perfect example.
what happened to the Crew Cab 2wd with standard (78″) bed ? This chart only shows 4WD standard bed Crew.
I would have to say 2wd crew 6.5 bed no longer available?
I think if I had something with a 5th wheel or gooseneck I would step up to a HD chassis.
In 2010 I was able to order a 1500, 5.3l truck with more than 10,000 lb tow capacity. How did GM manage to go backwards, again and again? I was able to safely and comfortably tow a 28 foot 5th wheel trailer with ease. No more.
I think the ball hitch chart and the 5th Wheel chart are swapped. You should certainly be able to tow more with 5th wheel hitch than ball Hitch.
A chart of towing capability without a payload estimate is worthless. Where is the GM 2023 Towing Guide?? When I use the build tool, why can’t GM provide the towing and payload information? Folks cannot order a truck when the dealer cannot provide the payload capability of any truck.
How do you determine hitch weight capacity?
Can anyone explain why the Crew Cab 4WD with as 5.3 has a 9200 lb tow capacity and the 6.2 only has 8900 lb tow capacity? with the same Axle Gear ratio?
Hell they even rate the I4 the same as the 6.2?
I am buying the GMC AT4 and noticed the towing capacity
Is only 9,000 lbs. What’s the reason it’s so low compared
To the other 1/2 ton Chevy and GMC trucks ? I am sure there is a good reason just curious to what it is.
The AT4 suspension is designed for off-roading, not towing. It’s softer/bouncier. I had a Trail Boss, my travel trailer porpoised a lot when towing. I have a Sierra SLT w/NHT now, it tows much nicer. It won’t go where an AT4 can go, though.
New gmcs tow ratings dropped .I bought t a new 2023 gmc Denali 3.0 only to find out it only tows 8,800 lbs and is now marking over weight on the trucks trailering system how did my older model 2021 3.0 duramax pull more than the 2023 models also gmc advertises that they tow 13k lbs when In all reality all 2023 3.0,5.2,&6.2 tow under 9,000lbs I can’t find one over 3.23 axle ratio. Did research and it says only sle, slt, and elevation models carry max tow package at 13klbs so why show the ultimate Denali and state it can do that if it can’t ?
SS,
GMC seems to have some b ig changes with 1500 Towing capacity.
I have tried to do a build with 6.2 and MaX trailering option and it won’t let me do it.
In order to get the MAX Trailering package it looks like I have to select the 3.0 Duramax.
But I can build it in a Silverado, What happened to GMC being professional Grade?
And you have to have 20″ wheels for Max Trailering on both Sierra and Silverado, 22″ wheel not allowed? Why is that?
