The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 is the fifth model year of the latest fourth-generation light-duty pickup, debuting a number of important changes and updates compared to the fully refreshed 2022 model year. Among these changes is updated towing figures, and now, GM Authority is breaking down Silverado 1500 towing capacities.
Before we start, let’s review the powertrain options. The 2023 Chevy Silverado is offered with four different engine options. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This is followed by the atmospheric 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and the atmospheric 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, which delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All-new for the 2023 Silverado is the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax. Considered the “second iteration” of GM’s Duramax 3.0L straight-six, this diesel churns out 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.
As for transmission options, the L3B is matched to the GM eight-speed automatic, while the L84, the L87 and the LZ0 are offered with the GM 10-speed automatic.
With that covered, here are the 2023 Silverado 1500 towing capacities:

2. ZR2 rated at 6,000 pounds / 2,722 kilograms.
Looking over the numbers, we see that the maximum weight a 2023 Silverado can tow is 13,300 pounds with a ball hitch and either the 6.2L V8 L87 or 3.0L I6 LZ0 engines. Meanwhile, the maximum tow weight with a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch is 10,300 pounds, achieved with the 5.3L V8 L84. The Max Trailering Package (RPO code NHT) is also required to reach these numbers.
When compared to the outgoing 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 towing capacities, we see that ball hitch capacities have gone up around 100 pounds on some configurations. However, the ZR2 towing capacity has actually dropped 100 pounds. For 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches, it’s much of the same, although more configurations have had in increase in capacity. Unfortunately, the ZR2 towing capacity fell even more, down by 400 pounds to 6,000 compared to the 2022 model.
As a reminder, production of the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, the GM Silao plant in Mexico, and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada. The Silverado rides in the GM T1 platform, which it shares with its corporate platform-mate, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500.

Seems annoying that the TrailBoss diesel keeps 3.23 gears while you can opt for 3.73s with max-tow or diesel off-road package on the LT and RST.
A 3.73 option on a trailboss or AT4 would be ideal for those of us who plan to swap to a bigger tire.
The current ZR2 Silverado is rated to tow almost 9000lbs, not sure what the author means by its down 400lbs to 6000?
I will take a 3.0 max tow pkg if diesel fuel comes back down
Tried to order an LTZ with the 3.0 diesel, max Trailering package. Was told that
Max Trailering
Tonneau cover
Texas Edition
Power assist steps
Are all un available for ordering.
I have a brand new 2023 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LTZ with the 3.0 Duramax available for sale right now. MSRP is under $66k.
Waiting on an order for over a year. Was just told by my dealer, that the MAX Trailer option is not available on Silverado LZO LTZ truck. So as I read it the tow capacity drops without Max Trailer. 🙁
Just visited a dealership and then looked at these tow ratings. From what I gather GM offers 4 engines with extremely close tow ratings. For the three gas engines; 2.7, 5.3 and 6.2, the mpg is also extremely close. The 2.7 has more torque than the 5.3 V-8. What is the advantage of any of the gas engines if efficiency and tow rating is essentially identical? It’s a truck, to work. Acceleration is not something I care about.
A big difference is the 6.2 requires premium gas to achieve those numbers.
Better get some Timbrens for the ZR2 if ya wanna tow anything. Selling mine…squats insane amounts and premium fuel for the 6.2 motor…fuel economy is horrid. Worst truck I could have ever chose.
