GMC Yukon Again Outsells Ford Expedition During Q3 2022

GMC Yukon sales increased in the United States and Canada but decreased in Mexico during the third quarter of 2022.

GMC Yukon Sales – Q3 2022 – United States

Cumulative deliveries of the GMC Yukon family in the United States increased 22 percent to 21,178 units in Q3 2022, comprised of:

  • 12,591 units of the regular-length Yukon, an increase of 17 percent compared to 10,733 units sold in Q3 2021 and
  • 8,587 units of the extended-length Yukon XL, an increase of 28 percent compared to 6,695 units sold in Q3 2021

GMC Yukon Sales – Q3 2022 – Canada

Cumulative deliveries of the GMC Yukon family in Canada increased 10 percent to 2,389 units in Q3 2022, comprised of:

  • 1,410 units of the regular-length Yukon, an increase of eight percent compared to 1,310 units sold in Q3 2021 and
  • 979 units of the extended-length Yukon XL, an increase of 15 percent compared to 853 units sold in Q3 2021

GMC Yukon Sales – Q3 2022 – Mexico

Cumulative deliveries of the GMC Yukon family in Mexico decreased 22 percent to 267 units in Q3 2022, comprised of:

  • 119 units of the regular-length Yukon, a decrease of 27 percent compared to 164 units sold in Q3 2021 and
  • 148 units of the extended-length Yukon XL, a decrease of 18 percent compared to 180 units sold in Q3 2021

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Yukon sales kept the full-size SUV family in second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during the third quarter 2022, a spot it acquired over the past year, beating out the Ford Expedition and all other competitors. Only its corporate cousins at Chevy moved more metal.

First, some words about our approach to the figures: Ford combines sales of the Expedition and Expedition Max into a single line item called Expedition, while GM’s Chevy Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are reported on separate line items. To keep it apples-to-apples, we combine sales of the Tahoe with those of the Suburban, and do the same with sales of the Yukon and Yukon XL.

The Yukon’s corporate cousins, the Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) and Chevy Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales), together remained at the top with a 27 percent increase in sales to 43,170 units. The Yukon family continued in second place with a 22 percent bump to 21,178 units. The Ford Expedition family (see running Ford Expedition sales) took third with a 12 percent increase to 18,760 units.

The all-new Jeep Wagoneer, which launched last summer, placed fourth with 13,001 units. The Nissan Armada followed in fifth with an eight percent bump to 4,089 units, while the Toyota Sequoia took last place with a 98 percent decline to just 30 units as the next-generation model is finally beginning to arrive at dealers.

From a segment share standpoint, the Yukon and Yukon XL maintained a 22 percent share.

The Tahoe and Suburban maintained a 44 percent segment share while the Expedition family held a 19 percent share, down four percentage points. The Wagoneer posted a 13 percent share, while the Armada held a four percent share, down one percentage point. The Sequoia’s share was nil.

The four GM models combined continued to command the mainstream full-size SUVs segment with a cumulative 66 percent segment share, moving 64,348 units, up 25 percent year-over-year. By comparison, sales of the Expedition grew 12 percent to just 18,760 units – representing less than a third of The General’s deliveries.

The mainstream full-size SUV segment grew 36 percent to 100,228 units during Q3 2022, meaning Yukon family sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Yukon family sales continue to outsell the Ford Expedition range, as has been the case for more than a year now. Only the launch of the all-new Yukon family for the 2021 model year made that possible. Yet, GM is already working a model refresh, with the upcoming 2024 GMC Yukon spied for the first time back in February of this year. Just a month later our spies caught the 2024 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate testing out in the wild.

The Yukon and Yukon XL were only outsold by corporate cousins Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, which together enabled The General to again dominate the full-size SUV segment.

In May, The General introduced the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate as the ultra-luxurious trim level that was first introduced on the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup earlier this year before making its way to the refreshed 2024 Sierra HD. The range-topping trim is described by GM as “the most premium Yukon ever offered,” featuring upgrades both inside and out. Notably, the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate differs from the Denali Ultimate Package (RPO Code PEC) that was offered on the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali as an option. While Denali Ultimate was a package that could be applied to the Denali trim for the 2022 model year, the 2023 model year reintroduces the Ultimate moniker as an all-new trim level that further differentiates the Denali Ultimate from the regular Denali with even more upmarket equipment and features.

Production of the 2023 GMC Yukon kicked off at the GM Arlington plant in Texas on July 18th, 2022. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 Yukon.

In April, Stellantis debuted the Jeep Wagoneer L and the more luxuriously-appointed Grand Wagoneer L, with the two extended wheelbase full-size SUVs introduced as direct rivals to GM’s own extended-length offerings, including the Yukon XL, Suburban, and Cadillac Escalade ESV. Notably, sales volume of the regular-length Wagoneer continues to rise, edging out the regular-length Yukon again.

Above we noted that the next-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia is finally arriving at dealerships in yet another attempt to try and take on GM’s offerings.

Additionally, The Blue Oval debuted its answer a year ago with its refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition in hopes of competing against The General as well.

Regardless, GM is poised to take on all comers in the full-size SUV space, with sales performance proving that quarter after quarter. It would seem that the sky is the limit for GM’s success with the Yukon. The only thing that would hold sales back are production-related limitations and constraints.

Considering that Ford dealers have almost no inventory on their lots to speak of, it is not a surprise that any model outsells its Ford rival…most Ford dealers have gone to special order only for new cars. The Ford dealer in my town only has about 18 new cars on the lot (most of them are Bronco’s and F150’s with a couple of Edge’s and one Escape) where the GM and Dodge dealerships around them have double to triple that amount of inventory. This is the most new inventory the Ford dealer has had in about a year.

Tim, I agree with much of what you are saying however, as someone who works at a Ford dealership, I can say with 100% confidence that it is not the dealerships choosing this business model, but rather Ford cramming it down our throats! Believe me, the last couple of years have been brutal on Ford dealerships! Our dealership used to sell between 80-100 new trucks per month, now we don’t even sell 8. We also had a very loyal customer base that liked to trade every couple of years, which supplied us with a great selection of locally owned trades. Now we have to go to auction to get used inventory where we have to compete with the likes of Carvanna, Carmax, Auto Nation, and Vroom that are bidding the used vehicles into the stratosphere!

  2. The V8 rules. Why buy a 6-cyl Ford? GM did a great job not having the Yukon imitate the Escalade dashboard. The Yukon, especially the Denali look like they styled it to have a finished appearance. Classy without the feminine ginger bread. Turns out women love vehicles that look manly too. Especially those on truck frames.
